Prabhupada: [Aside:] [indistinct] do that.
Srila Sanatana Gosvami after giving permission to his servant Īsana to go back. Because Sanatana Gosvami did not think it proper to accompany with a person who has got still some attachment for material benefits. This Caitanya Mahaprabhu His cult or Krsna consciousness cult is known in a different way as vairagya-vidya. Vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yoga. Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya composed about 100 verses after his conversion by Lord Caitanya, to Vaisnava cult. Out of those hundred verses two or three verses are very prominent. One of them is:
vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yogam
siksartham ekaḥ purusaḥ puranaḥ sri-krsna-caitanya-sarira-dhari krpambudhir yas tam aham prapadye [Cc Madhya 6.254] So Sri Krsna Himself in order to teach to the people in general vairagya-vidya. The science of renunciation. How to renounce. Vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yogam. That renunciation, renunciation does not mean that one should become zero. That is not possible. We are not follower of that philosophy. I have got suppose, one rupee in my pocket, I renounce it. Then my pocket becomes zero. So our philosophy is not that being unable to enjoy this material world-in frustration we renounce. No, there is no question of frustration. Renunciation means, renouncing the sense of enjoying this world, that is renunciation.
People are engaged in this material world simply for sense gratification. Everyone is trying to excel others, how one can enjoy senses. Every year in Europe, America, especially in America. Every year a new model of motor car. All the manufacturer's they are advertising, "Come on here is a very nice motor car." The whole competition is sense gratification, that's all. Whole energy of the human society is being utilized for sense gratification. And vairagya-vidya means that no more sense gratification. Now begin the life of gratifying, satisfying Krsna. That is vairagya-vidya. Anukūlyena krsnanu-silanam [Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.1.11], sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam tat-paratvena nirmalam [Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.1.12]. This is mukti-nirmalam. Malam means-contaminated by the three qualities of material nature, sattva, rajas, tama. And nirmalam means:
Sa gunan, this gunan, gunan means this material modes of nature. Samatitya, samyak-atita and that is called vairagya-vidya. So we have to purify ourselves from the contamination of this material modes of nature. That is mukti. So vairagya-vidya means that.
Now Sanatana Gosvami he was Minister and he renounced this post. Does it mean that his activities became zero? No more active. No. His activities become accelerated when they approached Vrndavana after taking instruction from Caitanya Mahaprabhu. They were so busy in Vrndavana that they could not sleep even more than one and a half hours. These are stated. And so far vairagya is concerned they were staying underneath a tree daily changing. Daily. Not that underneath a tree living for good. No. This night underneath a tree and the next night another tree. Why? Because it may not be again contaminated, "Oh this place is very nice, let me stay here." This has been..., but a still you can find from their literature how that busy they were.
krsnot-kirtana-gana-nartana-parau premamrtambho-nidhi
dhiradhira-jana-priyau priya-karau nirmatsarau pūjitau sri-caitanya-krpa-bharau bhuvi bhuvo bharava-hantarakau vande rūpa-sanatanau raghu-yugau sri-jiva-gopalakau [Saḍ-gosvamy-astaka 1] These are the description of their activities in Vrndavana. Not that the modern so-called Babajis imitating Sanatana Gosvami, Rūpa Gosvami, simply by a loin cloth and doing all nonsense, no. They are very busy. Always busy; 24 hours. So how they were busy and that is described in the verses composed by Srinivasa Acarya that krsnot-kirtana-gana-nartana-parau. Always chanting and dancing, not only chanting but also dancing, krsnot-kirtana-gana-nartana-parau. Nartana means-dancing.
Krsnot-kirtana-gana-nartana-parau, so dancing it cannot be done artificially. This ecstatic dancing in this Krsna Consciousness Movement is not an artificial dance. It comes automatically from within, one who is advanced. So the dancing, not that to make a show dance. It comes automatically, asta-sattvika-vikara [Cc Antya 14.99], eight kinds of transformation of bodily symptoms when one is advanced.
Dancing, sobbing, crying, breathing so many-perspiring there are so many things. They are in the advanced they are not to be imitated but they come automatically. Krsnot-kirtana-gana-nartana. premamrtambho-nidhi. Those who are absorbed in pure love of God for them these things can come automatically. Eh? Dhiradhira-jana-priyau priya-karau, at that time they have no distinction, everyone becomes pleased upon them. Dhira, dhira means-those who are sober, advanced, gentle or spiritually advanced, they are called dhira. And those who have restrained their senses, control the mind they are called dhira. And adhira-those who could not.
So the activities of the Gosvami's in Vrndavana were so nice that all the inhabitants of that part of the country were pleased to them. Still in Vrndavana Sanatana Gosvami's name is very popular. Sanatana Gosvami was so popular in that. In those days that all the villagers even there were some family quarrels between husband and wife or somebody else. Father and son, they would come to Sanatana Gosvami for settlement. "Sir this has happened, now you decide who's in fault." So Sanatana Gosvami decides, "Yes, you do this," like that and they will agree.
So dhiradhira-jana-priyau, so they were so popular that what to speak of the saintly persons even ordinary persons adhira. Those who are engaged in material activities they were also very obedient to Sanatana Gosvami. Dhiradhira-jana-priyau priya-karau, because their behavior was so nice. This is Vaisnava, all good qualities should come, should manifest in the body.
Anyone who has developed Krsna consciousness then the result will be that all the good qualities of the demigods will develop in his person. Automatically. Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna [SB 5.18.12]. And those who are not Krsna conscious they have no good qualifications. Nothing. There is no value of their qualification that is the verdict of the sastra. Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna, why? He is so much educated, he has passed so many examinations and he is nothing. Yes, that is also stated in the Bhagavad-gita, mayayapahrta-jnana [Bg 7.15].
The knowledge, because therefore at the present moment we see the more a person becomes educated he becomes atheist. He becomes Godless. So mayayapahrta-jnana, jnana, unless one takes education on the basis of spiritual science. Such kind of education will produce only frustrated hippies, as we say here in the western countries. Big, big universities, big, big buildings, nice arrangement, there is no scarcity of books, libraries, facilities. Everything royal order but the production-hippies.
Why? This Godless civilization. In our country it's a different position but in western countries the government spends enough money for the educational department to make their citizens qualified. Unfortunately because the education is Godless, from the very beginning the students. Boys and girls they learn all kinds of bad habits, naturally. So we do not wish to discuss that thing but a Godless civilisation has no quality, good quality. Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna manorathena [SB 5.18.12]. They are situated hovering on the mental plane therefore they would create[?]. That I have practically seen. These boys were known as hippies in the western countries they are coming of very good families. Having good education but being frustrated they without being guided their life is spoiled. That I have practically seen.
Because they have no spiritual information simply on the mental platform. So mental platform what is there? It is the same as, yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham [SB 7.9.45].
As their father and mother satisfied in sex life, they also take the same thing sex life and intoxication, that's all. Because they have no information, manorathenasati dhavato bahiḥ. Because in the mental platform they must take to the same. Bhagavata says: punaḥ punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]-chewing the chewed.
So this movement started by Caitanya Mahaprabhu is so nice, vairagya-vidya, nija-bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga means to engage oneself in devotional service, means automatically detached. Automatically renounced, he hasn't got to learn to renounce or take sannyasa. He's automatically sannyasa. No more interest: param drstva nivartate [Bg 2.59].
Getting a better thing they reject all nonsense. Not that artificially one has to learn how to become detached. You give him good thing and he will be no more interested in nonsense things. That is vairagya.
So in Krsna Consciousness Movement immediately there is, I mean, Deity worship. Deity worship, dressing the Deities, feeding the Deities with every item. The aratri, chanting, dancing-it goes to the credit of the devotee. Immediately, these are. These things are described in our book, "Nectar of Devotion." Even a child who comes here, a small child by seeing the dancing, he also, he also begins. I have seen practically. Immediately begins. Immediately dances. This is the effect of bhakti-yoga. Even a child can take part, even a dog can take part, even an animal can take part. And the vibration of that spiritual science as a sound will purify the whole atmosphere so that even there are so many small animals in the wall and the corner, they will be purified.
This was questioned by Caitanya Mahaprabhu to Haridasa Thakura. So He said, "By chanting Hare Krsna mantra loudly the trees and the animals who are surrounding they will be benefited." It is not the question of understanding or not understanding it is spiritual sound. The sound has effect, ceto-darpana-marjanam [Siksastaka 1].
So these Gosvami's like Sanatana Gosvami. After advising his personal servant, "So you'd better go back. You cannot come with me," he became alone. He became alone and gradually he came to Hajipura. Hajipura I think it is nearer from here. Eh? Cali' cali' gosani tabe aila hajipure [Cc Madhya 20.37]. Aila hajipure. Sandhya-kale vasila eka udyana-bhitare. I was walking alone, so and in the evening he found some nice garden. So he took some rest.
Government service, because all their relatives were engaged in government service. He left his ministership, but his another brother in law he also came to Hajipura for some business. He is also government servant.
This Sonepur-mela is for selling horses and cows. There is very old system, so here we see 500 years ago when Sanatana Gosvami was passing his brother in law engaged in government service he came to purchase horses there.
Now this year I... There is reporting, that there is no more purchaser of horses. Means people are so economically advanced that they have no money to purchase, even horses and cows. You see?
Perhaps you know this report was published, in the Sonepur all the horses and cows they brought for selling. They have to take back there was no customer. And so far elephants were concerned there was no customer. So this is an old system that in Hajipura or Sonepur the mela for selling animals we can find in Caitanya-caritamrta.
So he could see that Dhabir Khas his brother-in-law is here. In a very dirty place. So he could understand, he must have heard that he was imprisoned and somehow or other he has escaped. So he immediately he did not talk with him but he could recognize his brother-in-law, Sanatana Gosvami. So he came at night to see him, ratrye eka-jana-sahge gosani-pasa aila, with a servant he came to see him.
Then he enquired how he was released and everything was disclosed to him. Because he was brother-in-law, talk very freely.
So he requested his brother-in-law, that you stay here for two or three days. You give up, give up this dirty dress because he has given up everything. There is no care for his body and the cloth was dirty, the dress was dirty, there was beard and so his brother-in-law did not like and he requested that, "Please become a gentle. Why you are going in this dress?"
Then Sanatana Gosvami said, "Don't talk like that, please help me to cross this river immediately." Gahga-Ganges.
But a still he gave him one blanket, of course he was government servant responsible officer. So he gave him very nice blanket, costly blanket. There is a story about this blanket, we shall come later on. So, "So all right if you don't stay please take this blanket and I am helping you to cross the river you go."
Then gradually he reached Varanasi when Caitanya Mahaprabhu was there staying. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was coming from Vrndavana via Varanasi. And he understood that Lord Caitanya is here.
Very recently, I think a fortnight ago we went to Varanasi to participate in the ceremony they observe. A ceremony, a big procession, the arrival day of Lord Caitanya in Varanasi. They observe still and there is a place Caitanya-vata. People come and see there is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's picture saḍbhuja-mūrti. There are some men they worship. So we also went there to participate in a huge procession. Perhaps you know it? It was published in the paper. So that day in memory of Caitanya's arrival is still observed.
Now, by asking people where Caitanya Mahaprabhu was living he came to the house of Candrasekhara Acarya. That house is unlawfully occupied by one Punjabi gentleman. He is not giving up. They are trying that it is the original house of Candrasekhara's house but he is not agreeable. You have seen that house. It is still existing.
So he came there and sat down on the door and Caitanya Mahaprabhu could understand that Sanatana Gosvami has come. So He asked somebody, Candrasekhara, "To go and call, there is a Vaisnava at the door, please call him."
'dvare eka 'vaisnava' haya, bolaha tahhare'
candrasekhara dekhe-'vaisnava' nahika dvare [Cc Madhya 20.47] So when Candrasekhara Acarya came on the door he saw that there was… Vaisnava means there must be tilaka and just like Vaisnava dress. So he could not recognize. He was very shabbily dressed with beard and dirty things. So he could not understand, "Where is a Vaisnava?" Mahaprabhu said that, "Go and there is a Vaisnava sitting at your door, call him." But he could not recognize. Therefore it is said that: vaisnavera kriya, mudra vijneha na bujhaya [Cc Madhya 23.39]. Generally this dress of Vaisnava, this tilaka, this malika and beads that is the general were but sometimes a Vaisnava may not be dressed like that but still a Vaisnava. So we may mistake sometimes. That mistake was done, Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that, "There is a person sitting on the door, he is a Vaisnava, call him." But Candrasekhara Acarya, although he was a learned man he could not recognize.
So he replied that, "There is no Vaisnava, a Mohammadan daravesa. There is a saintly person daravesa, he is sitting there." Tehho kahe,-eka 'daravesa' ache dvare 'tahre ana'. So immediatly Caitanya Mahaprabhu.. "Yes, that's alright, bring that person, even he's a daravesa." Then Candrasekhara Acarya went to him, "Please come within the house, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is here, He is asking you to come."
Immediately after hearing this indication from Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he immediately entered this house.
As soon as Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw that he has entered the courtyard. Immediately He personally came to receive him and embraced him. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was so glad to receive Sanatana Gosvami.
In faltering voice, Sanatana Gosvami said, "My dear Lord please do not touch me." Please do not touch me, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu without heeding to his request He embraced him, Sanatana Gosvami.
Both of them were crying and embracing and Candrasekhara Acarya he could not understand what is the farce. Eh, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is so sober and a sannyasi and here He is, I do not know whether he is a Hindu or Mohammadan. He is dress so, I mean dirty and how is that they are embracing and crying?
Then He took Sanatana Gosvami where Caitanya Mahaprabhu was sitting on a raised platform. So he sat down and he asked the Sri-haste karena tahra ahga sammarjana [Cc Madhya 20.55].
Caitanya Mahaprabhu with His hand was massaging his body. "Oh you've taken so much trouble, eh." This is the relation.
[becomes emotionally silent]
[pause]... [clears throat]...
[fly buzzing mic] [pause]... Hm.
Lord Caitanya says... Sanatana Gosvami requested Him, "My dear Lord please do not touch me."
[pause]... [fly buzzing mic]...
[clears throat]... Hm.
So the devotee is requesting the Lord, "Please do not touch me. I am so unclean. I am so fallen." But the Lord is saying that, "I am touching you to purify Myself." How He is teaching the world the exalted position of Vaisnava.
[pause]
Hm. "I am touching you just to purify Myself because you are so great that by your devotional service you can deliver the whole universe."... Hm. Bhakti-bale para tumi brahmanḍa sodhite, so if there is one Vaisnava there is much benefit throughout the whole world, whole universe. Now he is giving citings from evidence:
He is giving evidence from Srimad-Bhagavatam that a Vaisnava, Bhavad-vidha bhagavatas, bhavad-vidha bhagavata, bhagavata, tirthi, tirtha-bhūtaḥ svayam prabho. A pure devotee is pilgrimage in themselves, in himself. So, tirtha-bhūtaḥ svayam prabho, tirthi-kurvanti tirthani. By their presence actually a tirtha, any place they are situated that is a tirtha, tirthi-kurvanti tirthani. Svantaḥ-sthena gada-bhrta. Because they are simply carrying out, they are moving temples, svantaḥ-sthena gada-bhrta. Gada-bhrta is Krsna, eh. So because they are always carrying Krsna. So they are moving pilgrimage, moving tirtha. Wherever they will go it will become tirtha. It doesn't matter whether here or there. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's blessing.
So if one sincere devotee is there following the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, worshipping Lord Krsna, he can purify, wherever he moves, wherever he goes he can purify. That is the special prerogative of an empowered devotee. Bhakti-bale para tumi brahmanḍa sodhite [Cc Madhya 20.56]. So Sanatana Gosvami actually these Gosvamis. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura says: rūpa-raghunatha-pade haibe akuti, kabe hama bujhaba se yugala-piriti [Prarthana 1.3-4].
If we really try to understand the Krsna science we have to follow the footsteps of the Gosvamis. They have given us so many nice literatures, just like here is a nice literature Caitanya-caritamrta given by Kaviraja Gosvami. Similarly there are many books, especially by Jiva Gosvami all big thesis for understanding Krsna. Six thesis's: Sat-sandarbha, Bhagavata-sandarbha, Krsna-sandarbha, Bhakti-sandarbha, like that. And Rūpa Gosvami has given so many literatures. Of these, Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, and Vidagdha-madhava, Lalita-madhava. And Sanatana Gosvami, Brhad-bhagavatamrta, immense literatures these Gosvami's have given. They are not all published some of them were stolen. Some of their stolen. At Visnupura. Visnupura is a district in Bengal when Srinivas Acarya all the.
A still very recently from Radha-Damodara temple the priests they have stole so many manuscripts. So these Gosvami's they. Our purpose was that these Gosvami's after retirement. Not that they took a life of rest without doing anything. They were so busy always writing books, krsnotkirtana-gana-nartana... nana-sastra-vicaranaika-nipunau [Sri Saḍ-gosvamy-astaka]. Not that to become dumb and dull, stupid. No. They were always scrutinisingly. Ah if you study the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, so many references are there from different sastras. How much learned they were, just try to understand, nana-sastra-vicaranaika-nipunau. Very expert in studying, scrutinisingly all kinds of Vedic literature. So this Gauḍiya Vaisnava sampradaya is very rich in spiritual knowledge, very, very rich than all other Vaisnava sampradaya's. There is a specific position of the Gauḍiya Vaisnava by the grace of these Goswami's. Kaviraja Gosvami, Sanatana Gosvami, Rūpa Gosvami and Jiva Gosvami, Raghunatha Dasa Gosvami, Raghunatha Bhatta Gosvami. All of them, highly selected person of that time. They have given immense literature, nana-sastra-vicaranaika-nipunau sad-dharma-samsthapakau.
So why they take so much trouble of studying Vedic literature? Because, sad-dharma-samsthapakau. Just to establish real religious principles in the world. Because there are so many bluffers they are putting the whole world into Godless life and they are suffering. There that is also stated, nana-sastra-vicaranaika-nipunau sad-dharma-samsthapakau lokanam hita-karinau. What is the purpose? Lokanam hita, lokanam, it is not that for Indians or for brahmanas or for this or that Bengalis. No. lokanam, all the lokas, for all of them, lokanam hita-karinau tri-bhuvane manyau. Therefore they are honored throughout the three worlds. Not that by a particular group. No. Lokanam hita-karinau tri-bhuvane manyau saranyakarau, that was their, I mean to say, acarya business. Acarya has got two sides, one he works as acarya-teach people, another his own bhajana, his own worship.
So these Gosvami's set the example. Tri-bhuvane manyau saran radha-krsna-padaravinda-bhajananandena mattalikau. In this way they were engaged whole day and night as always worshipping Radha-Krsna, radha-krsna bhajananandena mattalikau. Just like the flies they are after honey, matta. Mad after the honey and similarly they were always busy to taste the nectarine of Radha-Krsna worship.
hari hari! biphale anama gohainu
manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya, janiyasuniya visa khainu [Prarthana 4.1] Narottama dasa Thakura chants [fly buzzing mic] Ah, hari hari! biphale janama. I have simply spoiled my life. Why? Manusya-this life, human form of life is to understand Radha-Krsna but I did not care for it. So the result is-janiyasuniya visa khainu. Knowingly I have taken poison. So those who are not in Krsna consciousness they are, I mean to, voluntarily drinking poison. That's all.
Thank you very much. Hare Krsna.
Devotee: What was his age?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Devotee: How old [indistinct]?
Prabhupada: How old?
Devotee: …Sanatana Gosvami.
Prabhupada: They were never old.
Devotee: His body I guess.
Prabhupada: They had no bodily concept of life. You see. They were Ministers after retired and went to Vrndavana. That means elderly gentlemen. That's all. What you will get by knowing his age?
Devotee: Just curious.
Prabhupada: There is no such mention...
