Prabhupada: Some talk with Lord Caitanya and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. So he is. Last night we were discussing about the position of the ksetrajna, ksetrajna-akhya-sakti. The living entities, as is explained in the Bhagavad-gita are called ksetrajnakhya-sakti, they are known as ksetrajna. As you know, everyone, the living entity is a individual part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and in the Bhagavad-gita the Lord Himself also says ksetrajnam capi mam viddhi. He is also ksetrajna: sarva-ksetresu bharata. That is the difference between Paramatma and jivatma. I am ksetrajna, you are ksetrajna...
[child makes noise] There is disturbance.
Because this body is known as ksetra and one who lives in this body and knows about the body is called ksetrajna. [coughs] So far we are individually concerned I know the pleasures and pains of my body. You know the pleasures and pains of your body but I do not know the pleasures and pains of your body. Neither you know the pleasures and pains of my body. Therefore we are all individual ksetrajna with limited potency. Avinasi tu tad viddhi yena sarvam idam tatam [Bg 2.17], "My consciousness is pervading all over this body."
If you pinch any part of your body you are conscious, there is pain. But if I pinch your body I am not conscious of your pain. Therefore I am not all-pervading ksetrajna, all-pervading ksetra is Krsna. He says:
As you are feeling pains and pleasure of your body, as I am feeling pains and pleasure of my body. But I do not feel the pains and pleasure of your body neither you feel the pains and pleasure of my body. But there is another ksetrajna who is Krsna. He feels these pains and pleasure or your desires-thinking, feeling and willing. He knows of your body and my body and everyone's body-ksetrajnam capi mam viddhi sarva-ksetresu bharata. That is Paramatma, do not mistake that Paramatma and jivatma are one. If Paramatma and jivatma are one then I would have felt your pains and pleasure, you would have felt my pains and pleasure-that is not possible.
So this ksetrajna-sakti is being discussed by Lord Caitanya and:
Yaya-avidya, we were discussing the avidya potency. Avidya aneka [?]
We are now under the control of avidya and these living entities entrapped by avidya is sarva-ga. Sarva-ga means, "Everywhere you will find," not only in this material world but in the spiritual world also. So in the spiritual world the living entities are under the control of daivi prakrti or under the influence of the daivi prakrti: mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritaḥ. "Those who are mahatmas, they are under the control of the daivi prakrti, cit-sakti or Radharani or Laksmi." They are also under the control. Therefore Vaisnava's they first of all worship the cit-sakti of Bhagavan or the Personality of Godhead. Just like we, Gaudiya Vaisnavas, we first of all utter the holy name of Radharani, "Radhe-Krsna", "Radha-Krsna", "Hare Krsna". Hare Krsna is also addressing the cit potency or the spiritual potency of the Lord. Similarly in other Vaisnava sampradayas also they address, "Laksmi-Narayana," or, "Sita-Rama," because those who are devotees, they take protection under the cit potency or spiritual energy of the Lord. And those who are not devotees, those who are condemned within this material world, they are under the control of the external potency or maya-sakti: avidya-karma-samjnanya. Under the control of maya-sakti one forgets his relationship with Krsna and under the control of the cit potency he is simply engaged in the service of the Lord. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita:
Mahatma. Who is a mahatma? He is a great soul. Great soul is he who is under the... Those who are mahatmas their symptom is that they are constantly twenty-four hours engaged in the service of the Lord, that is mahatma. We can not stamp anyone as mahatma but we have to see by the symptoms, how mahatma is working. That is the definition given in the Bhagavad-gita, mahatma-daivim prakrtim asritaḥ. They are under the control of the cit potency, spiritual energy and therefore their characteristics is that constantly twenty-four hours engaged in Krsna consciousness-they are mahatmas.
"Anyone who is engaged in the devotional service of the Lord according to the prescribed rules and regulations they are above these three qualities of material nature: sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhūyaya kalpate. They are situated in the transcendental platform, brahma platform. That is also supported by Srimad-Bhagavatam. The brahma platform, when one is actually actively brahma platform that is his svarūpa or constitutional position. When one comes to the brahma platform he should remain neutral. That is called santa, santa-bhava: [the mood of neutrality]. That santa-bhava has to be increased to the dasya-bhava: [the mood of servitorship] and dasya-bhava has to be increased to the sakhya-bhava: [the mood of friendship] and sakhya-bhava has to be increased to vatsalya-bhava: [in the mood of parental affection]. Vatsalya-bhava has to be increased to madhurya-bhava: [the mood of conjugal love]. So Lord Caitanya's contribution is that He is teaching to the people in general all over the world about the madhurya-bhava:
anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnaḥkalua
samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam So the madhurya-bhava, conjugal love with Krsna, that is the special contribution of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So the living entities can rise up to that highest platform of conjugal love with Krsna, that is possible provided he is anxious.
That is the injunction of Srila Rūpa Gosvami that there is a rasa-bhavita matiḥ. By serving Krsna we associate with Krsna, there is a transcendental mellow-rasa. And one whose mind is surcharged with that transcendental mellow, he is the most fortunate. So Rūpa Gosvami instructs that if this status of mind: krsna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matiḥ. Yadi kuto 'pi labhyate: "If you can find out somewhere just purchase it." And what is the price? Tatra laulyam api mūlyam ekalam. That is simply your eagerness. If you simply become eager in this life that, "I want Krsna, I want to serve Krsna," that is the price. That is called bhava: budha bhava-samanvitaḥ [Bg 10.8]. When you become ecstasy, mad after Krsna, govinda-virahena me. Just like Lord Caitanya is speaking:
This attitude has to be attained, that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is teaching everyone that one should aspire after this position. What is that? Yugayitam nimesena. Even a moment is as long as a yuga: caksusa pravrsayitam, and the eyes filled with tears just like torrents of rain. And this sūnyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me, without Govinda. Everyone has got practical experience that when his beloved is not to be found he sees everything vacant, that is the krsna-prema. Prema pum-artho mahan [Caitanya-manjusa]. That is to be attained.
So Caitanya Mahaprabhu says this ksetrajna-sakti, living entities, they are sarvajna, everyone can, they can go. That facility he has got because we are conditioned therefore we can not go even to the moon planet. We are trying to go to the moon planet but because we are conditioned we cannot go but when we are liberated we can go anywhere we like. That facility is there. So we have to get of this conditioned life therefore Narada Muni. Narada Muni is free to go anywhere any planet in the spiritual world or in the material world, anywhere. That is spiritual life, that is real constitutional position of the. But because we are entrapped by this avidya, karma-sahga-sakti, we are hampered. Just try to understand your position. Your position is very sublime, you can go to the spiritual world, you can go to the material world, any part of the universe and any part of the spiritual sky. That is your prerogative, you can go, sarvajna. But how you can go? That is stated here.
taya tirohitatvac ca
saktiḥ ksetra-jna-samjnita sarva-bhūtesu bhū-pala taratamyena vartate [Cc Madhya 6.156] This ksetrajna-sakti, there are different types of ksetrajna-sakti jiva. Because in this material world there are three qualities. Three modes of material nature: the sattva-guna, tamo-guna, rajo-guna. Sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, ignorance, passion and goodness. So as we are becoming free from the encagement of maya-sakti, ksetra avidya karma-samjna sakti. So we are becoming advanced in spiritual life. So therefore everyone has to come in this material world, first of all with it the shape of sattva-guna. The position of a pure brahmana-sattva-guna. Without having come to the platform of sattva-guna nobody can make advance in spiritual life. Therefore we are teaching these boys, these American boys and European boys and girls to come to the platform of sattva-guna. No meat eating, no illicit sex life, no intoxication, no gambling. It is not that you shall remain a meat-eater, a gambler and intoxicator and at the same time you make spiritual advancement. This is bogus, you can not do that. You have to make yourself free from this material contamination. Therefore these four rules are incumbant, you must follow, we are stressing on this point. First of all with this tongue. We have got about fifty centers at the present moment and these American boys and girls they come there. We give them, I mean to, a chance for hearing the kirtana, sahkirtana. They join and gradually their hearts become cleansed. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc Antya 20.12]
This process of cleansing method as introduced by... it is not introduced, it is stated in our Vedic literatures. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu especially emphasized on this process of spiritual understanding in this age.
harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha You can not purify yourself by philosophical discussions only or yogic methods because they are very, very difficult processes, not applicable for the common man. But here Caitanya Mahaprabhu gives the formula that:
harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha If you chant these sixteen words:
hare krsna, hare krsna, krsna krsna, hare hare
hare rama, hare rama, rama rama, hare hare Offenslessly, without any offense, dasa-vidha-nama-aparadha-there are ten kinds of offenses. If you come to the platform of chanting Hare Krsna mantra without any offense you immediately get krsna-prema-love of Godhead, immediately. In the beginning we can not chant offenselessly. In the beginning we chant with offenses. Then the next stage is the almost offenseless:
If you constantly chant or if you constantly associate with the devotees that is very important thing. Rūpa Gosvami says that:
"You can induce your spiritual development in the association of sadhus." And who is a sadhu? Sadhu is also described in the Bhagavad-gita:
Sadhu means he is without any envious life. Simply engaged in devotional service, ananya-bhak. Kevala, kevala-bhakti, that is called ananya-bhak. Anyabhilasita-sūnyam [Cc Madhya 19.167], "Without any other desire." Not, even desiring mukti-then bhakti begins. Bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kamisakali 'asanta ' [Cc Madhya 19.149]. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says: "Those who are aspiring after mukti, to merge into the existence of the Absolute Truth, mukti. And bhukti, bhukti means those who are karmis, those who are simply aspiring after material enjoyment. Elevated to the heavenly planets and others, sense gratificatory planets. Material life means to enjoy the senses to the fullest extent. Just like in Europe and America we see for sense gratification how much they are working hard day and night, simply for sense gratification. So these, they are karmis. Of course, according to our Vedic civilization, that is also not karma, that is akarma api-karma [sinful activities], because by such karma they are deriding themselves. Karma means one has to elevate himselves to the higher positions, that is real karma, according to the sastras.
So the karmis, they are also busy they cannot be peaceful, because they are after sense enjoyment and the bhukti and mukti. Mukti means-jnanis. Those who are after liberation, they are also restless because they are desiring something. Bhukti mukti siddhi. And siddhi-kami means the yogis. The yogis are also aspiring after many vibhūtis, many perfections: anima, laghima, all these siddhis. They can become the smallest, they can become the lightest, they can capture anything. So many yoga siddhis there are, that is also material perfection.
So Caitanya-Mahaprabhu says: bhukti mukti siddhi-kamisakali 'asanta'. Asanta means they have nothing, they are desiring something. So long you desire something you can not have peace because you'll have to work hard and you have to make plans for having so many things. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu says:
Krsna-bhakta, he has no desires, he doesn't care for mukti because a krsna-bhakta says: muktiḥ mukulitanjali sevate 'sman [Krsna-karnamrta 107]. "Mukti is with folded hands trying to serve you." Why shall I ask for mukti? Because a pure devotee is already mukta, Krsna says:
A pure devotee is already a mukta, what does it mean mukti? Mukti means that hitvanyatha-rūpam, sva-rūpena vyavasthitiḥ. That is mukti:
And what is your svarūpa? Svarūpa means, "What is your constitutional position." That is enunciated by Lord Caitanya: jivera 'svarūpa' haya-nitya 'krsna-dasa' [Cc Madhya 20.108]. The real constitutional position of all living entities is that he is eternal servant of God. That is his real position. So if you become servant of God even in this life you are mukta. If you voluntarily accept that, "I am servant of God. I am servant of Krsna," and thus be engaged in His service twenty-four hours you are mukta. You haven't got to search after mukti: muktiḥ mukulitanjali sevate 'sman. "Mukti, with folded hands, will serve you with glory." And that is true because you in constitutional position. That is true. Just like my part and parcel is this finger. This finger is somehow or other is paralyzed by disease it can not serve my body. The healthy position is that I am indicating, "Finger please come here," it is immediately. "Finger come here," immediately. That is the constitutional position of the finger. And if the finger refuses to serve that is not the constitutional position. That is diseased condition. That is baddha avastha [conditioned state]. If the finger can not serve my purpose according to my desire it is diseased and I go to the doctor. I say, "Doctor this finger is not working very nicely. It is cancer" So the doctor tries and I spend for it. Similarly when the living entity is denying service of Krsna he is diseased, his condition. Up to the point of liberation. Therefore in the Srimad-Bhagavatam we find: dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo 'tra [SB 1.1.2], dharma, artha, kama, moksa. These things are thrown away, atra, Srimad-Bhagavatam. And Sridhara Svami gives his comment: atra moksa vancha api nirastaḥ .
So moksa vancha, up to the moksa vancha, that is also conditioned state of life. Because that is not natural life, that is artificial. So long I artificially try to be happy that is my diseased condition. We have to come to the healthy position. Therefore Krsna says that this healthy position comes after many, many births of philosophize, after many, many births of philosophizing:
So the intelligent persons they should take advantage of the instruction of Lord Caitanya that He says: jivera 'svarūpa' haya-nitya 'krsna-dasa'. Krsna also says: mamaivamso [Bg 15.7]. So the living entities are parts and parcels of Krsna and as part and parcel of my this body. He is always engaged in the service of the whole body. Similarly when a living entity is twenty-four hours engaged in the service of Krsna that is his liberated condition. So liberation does not mean something extraordinary. It is simply that liberation is offered by Krsna immediately.
Immediately if you agree to offer yourself in the service of the Lord, immediately. That means in a second you'll get liberation. People ask me, "So how long it takes to come to the perfection of Krsna consciousness?" I say, "In a second." Because simply you have to agree, that's all. Because you are not agreeing, because you are deviating from the service of Krsna-therefore you are not liberated. That is also stated here by Caitanya Mahaprabhu:
taya tirohitatvac ca
saktiḥ ksetra-jna-samjnita sarva-bhūtesu bhū-pala taratamyena vartate [Cc Madhya 6.156] Taratamyena vartate. As you become freed from the contamination of avidya-sakti, that I am thinking that, "I am not servant of God. I am god." That is maya. How you can be God? This theory is going on very strong all over the world, that by meditation one can become god. By meditation one can realize his own self and that meditation, that realization of self is explained in the Bhagavad-gita [7.19], "After many, many births he surrenders to Krsna," vasudevaḥ sarvam iti. That is the process. Not that the, "I am Krsna, or I am God." That is maya. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu further says that:
hladini sandhini samvit
tvayy eka sarva-samsraye hlada-tapa-kari misra tvayi no guna-varjite [Cc Madhya 6.157] So Krsna being energetic, He is saktiman and jiva is sakti.
Jiva, the jiva is an energy, marginal energy-sarva-ga. Sarva-ga means this marginal energy when it remains in this material world or can go to the spiritual world, as he likes. That is also confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita:
So it is not that as theory is going on. You can worship any demigod and you attain the highest perfection, no. Krsna does not say. Krsna says: yanti deva-vrata devan, "If you worship demigods then you go to the demigods." To attain perfection, just like if you want to go to the moon planet there is process you can learn that.
[tape fades out and speeds up] [End]
