Congregation: All glories to you, Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: [aside:] Bring that. The one fly is disturbing. No, no. Today's subject matter is how to…
Devotee: How to… [indistinct]
Prabhupada: Eh?
Devotee: …subject matter…
Prabhupada: Nobody can say what is the subject matter?
Devotee (2): How to know Krsna for the beginner.
[05:35]
Prabhupada: How to know Krsna by the beginners. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita,
Manusyanam. Out of millions and trillions of human beings, sahasresu. Sahasra means millions and trillions. It is not so easy to understand Krsna. Those who very easily understand Krsna, they easily forget also. Anything very easily understood, also easily forgotten. Transcendental realization, God realization, is achieved after tapasa, brahmacaryena, samena, damena, tyagena, saucabhyam, yamena niyamena va [SB 6.1.13].
One has to undergo all these processes to understand the Supreme Absolute Truth. The first beginning is tapasa, tapasa brahmacaryena, celibacy. Tapasya, to undergo austerities… Unless one is able to observe celibacy, it is not possible to undergo austerities. Tapasa brahmacaryena, samena, by controlling the mind; damena, by controlling the senses; tyagena, by renouncing the material world; saucena, by becoming actually clean within and out, outside. Bahyabhyantaraḥ suciḥsri-visnu sri-visnu sri-visnu.
apavitraḥ pavitro va
sarvavastham gato 'pi va yaḥ smaret punḍarikaksam sa bahyabhyantaraḥ-suciḥ [Garuḍa Purana, quoted in Hari-bhakti-vilasa 3.47] So saucena, yamena, niyamena, these are the different processes. So who is going to accept all these processes? It is very difficult, especially in this age, in Kali-yuga, where the duration of life is so short, people are all rascals, mandaḥ, manda-bhagyaḥ, manda-matayaḥ .
Not only rascals, they accept manufactured process, spiritual process manufactured, manda-matayaḥ. Manda-bhagyaḥ: all unfortunate. Unfortunate means that they have no arrangement even for daily fooding. Ahara, nidra, bhaya, maithuna [Hitopadesa 25]
-these are the necessities of bodily. But even, even though the birds and bees they have got arrangement by nature, the human being in this age, although they are supposed to be advanced, there is no arrangement. So many people are hungry. So many industrial are busy to feed them. Why you have created this situation? That they do not know. So this tapasya means brahmacarya. Tapasa brahmacaryena, samena, damena, niyamena, tyagena. There is no question of tyaga.
So Krsna says not only in this age, in other ages, where people were able to undergo austerities and penances for thousands of years… Because in the Satya-yuga people used to live for 100,000s of years. Therefore Valmiki Muni, he underwent austerities, meditation for 60,000s of years-still 40,000 years were left, the Satya-yuga, the duration of life was so long. In the Treta-yuga, ten times less; that means 10,000 years. In the Dvapara-yuga ten times less: 1,000 years. In the Kali-yuga, ten times less: 100 years. That is also not possible; nobody is living for 100 years. Gradually it will reduce to such an extent that a man living for 20 to 30 years will be considered a grand old man. But this is coming in this Kali-yuga.
So Krsna says that manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg 7.3]. Siddhi. Siddhi means mukti, liberation. Another siddhi: yogic-siddhi-asta-siddhi, anima, laghima, prapti. [eight mystic perfection such as-becoming smaller than the smallest, becoming lighter than the lightest, one acquires whatever one desires] They are also siddhis. But real siddhi means liberation. What is liberation? Liberation means to get free from the entanglement of repetition of birth and death. This is called liberation. Every one of us is subjected to birth and death, tatha dehantara-prapti [Bg 2.13], as we are changing our body.
So dehantaram: now I have got this body, you have got this body. I am now old man, seventy-seven years, so I may live five years, ten years more-or say up to a hundred years. But not that I shall live forever, neither any of you. One has to… Even Brahma, who has got a very long duration of life, still he will die. Every demigod will die.
So death, "As sure as death," everyone you know. So death, again take birth, again take birth. This is called material disease, bhūtva bhūtva praliyate [Bg 8.19]. Once you take birth, and again you die. So siddhi means to conquer over this birth and death. Aihistam yat tat punar janma jayaya [Ramayana]. When Visvamitra Muni met Maharaja Dasaratha to take assistance of Lord Ramacandra and Laksmana, to take them to the Danḍakaranya, because one raksasi was disturbing, so Visvamitra, he came for the assistance of the ksatriya. The brahmanas, they cannot kill; they do not take part in killing. They can kill, but this killing business is meant for the ksatriya. Therefore their name is ksatriya. Ksata, ksata means injury, and triya, trayate, the society who delivers a man who is attacked by others. This is the duty of the king: security. So at that time Maharaja Dasaratha welcomed him and asked him this question, aihistam yat tat punar janma jayaya: "You are undergoing severe penances and austerities for conquering over…"
[break]
…that is human life. If you forget this business-don't care for the next birth; let us enjoy life like cats and dogs-it is very horrible civilization. At the present moment it is so misleading that any man, any common man, he has no idea what is the next life. Big, big professors I have several times talked. I met one big professor in Moscow, Professor Kotovsky. So I was talking with him. He said, "Swamiji, after finishing this body there is no more birth." So you see, he is a professor, he is a professor of Indology, very important man. He does not know. Why he? Many professors here also, many scientists, they do not know that there is next life. They say…, they think that after finishing this body, everything is finished. Big, big professor, big, big educationalist, I have enquired-I do not wish to name them-they do not believe in the next life.
But that is not the fact. As we have got past and future… Just like I am now old man; I had my past life as young man; there must be the future life. Past, present and future. And it is confirmed by the greatest authority, Krsna. It is accepted by all the acaryas, all the strict followers and stalwart, I mean to say, educationalists in Vedic literature, that there is life: tatha dehantara-praptir. As we have got dehantara one after another, similarly, we have another deha. But what kind of deha, what kind of body, that we have to prepare now, while we are human being. If we put ourself in the laws of nature, then there is no guarantee what kind of body we are going. Because according to our mentality we shall get another body. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]: this will be decided by the laws of nature, automatically.
You cannot demand, "Now, my dear mother nature, I am Indian. I love my country so much, so I may be an Indian again." No. There is no such guarantee. Even if you become Indian, if you become Indian animal, then what is the result? You will be sent to the slaughterhouse. Who is going to save you as Indian? But Indian means for the so-called human being. "The cows are not Indian; they should be slaughtered." This is our philosophy. Well, Indian-the cows are Indian, the goats are Indian, chickens are Indians, trees are Indians, fishes are Indians. Why they should be slaughtered?
So this defective philosophy is going on because they have no Krsna consciousness. Krsna consciousness person will not try to kill even an Indian ant, what to speak of other animals. That is Krsna consciousness. Not only Indian-anywhere. Suhrdam sarva-bhūtanam [Bg 5.29].
And Krsna, God, is suhrdam sarva-bhūtanam, He says. Similarly, a pure Krsna conscious person, devotee of Krsna, He is also suhrdam sarva-bhūtanam: everyone's friend. Not that I am friend to my brother and sister and nobody else. No. A devotee is friend of the ant also. According to Vaisnava communism, a Vaisnava is advised to see that in his house not even an ant remains without food. Even there is snake, one should see that he is also fed up, he is not, I mean to say, hungry or fasting. This is the duty. Where is that communism?
So Krsna consciousness is so nice that one who becomes Krsna conscious, he becomes the perfect man, perfect man.
If one is actually Krsna conscious, yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana, he doesn't want anything except to love Krsna.
So a pure devotee of Krsna, who has no other desire than to love Krsna as it is instructed by Caitanya Mahaprabhu:
na dhanam na janam na sundarim
kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye mama janmani janmanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi Caitanya Mahaprabhu prays, "My dear Lord Jagadisa, the Lord of the universe, Jagadisa, I don't want any money,"na dhanam na janam, "neither I want any number of followers,"na sundarim kavitam, "neither very beautiful wife." In the material world everyone is trying to possess a beautiful wife, a very good bank balance, and to become leader of many men. So a pure devotee denies: na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye. Then what is your desire? Mama janmani janmanisvare: he does not want even liberation from birth and death. Because others, they want liberation.
So liberation for a devotee is already there. Anyone who is devotee, he is on the liberated platform. It is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita,
mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena ya sevate sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhūyaya kalpate [Bg 14.26] He is already on the liberated platform. Therefore a devotee hasn't got to ask for liberation. Bilvamahgala Thakura says, muktiḥ mukulitanjaliḥ sevate 'sman: "My dear Lord, if I've got my unflinching devotion unto You, then mukti, she's standing on my door with folded hands, and she is asking what can she do for me." [Sri Krsna-karnamrta 107] So a devotee is not very much anxious for liberation, because he doesn't want any…, anything. Therefore a devotee is called akama, akama.
There are many classes of men. So they have been divided into four divisions…, no, three divisions. What are those? Akama, sakama and moksa-kama. Akama, sakama and moksa-kama. Akama means devotee. He doesn't want anything; he simply wants to serve Krsna without any motive. That is akama. And sarva-kama means karmi. They have no end of demands: "Give me this, give me this, give me that."Dhanam dehi rūpam dehi rūpavati-bharyam dehi yaso dehi, dehi, dehi. [Give me wealth, give me beauty, give me beautiful wife, give me reputation, give, give…] That is sakama. And another person, moksa-kama, being disgusted with this kama, they want to become one with the Supreme. That is called moksa-kama.
But everyone is restless except devotee. That is stated in the Caitanya-caritamrita:
So long you will have desire to get something, to possess something, you will never be peaceful. That is not possible. Therefore bhukti-kami means karmis; mukti-kami, the jnanis; siddhi-kami, the yogis-they are all asanta. They are no santa; they are not santa. But krsna-bhakta niskama. Krsna-bhakta doesn't want anything; therefore he's peaceful. He can sit down anywhere and chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama…, and he gets the sublime blissful life. But people may ask, "Then why don't you sit down at a place and chant Hare Krsna?" Better than that life, for a devotee, to preach this Hare Krsna movement. That is better. Because Krsna says,
So Krsna says,
Siddhaye means mukti. Who is trying for mukti? They do not know what is mukti. There is no education in the school, colleges, and the big, big professors, educationalist, they do not know what is mukti, what is next life-all in the darkness-and they have become teachers, leaders, philosophers, religionists, scientists. So what will be the condition of the world? If one blind man leads you, that "I shall cross you this road. I shall help you crossing this road," how he'll do? He is blind, and how he will lead other blind men? That is the condition now. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is advised,
You have to approach a leader who is tattva-darsi, who has seen the Absolute Truth. Tattva-darsi. Therefore because we do not follow generally the tattva-darsi leader, therefore we do not know what is the tattva, what is the truth of Krsna. Krsna therefore said,
Even one is liberated, still it is very difficult for him to understand Krsna. Yatatam api siddhanam. Kascin, out of many, such siddhas, liberated, one is mukta. Mukta, out of many liberated, one is Krsna bhakta. That is the analysis of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu: out of millions of karmis, one jnani, one person in knowledge, is perfect. And out of millions of jnanis, one liberated person is perfect. And out of millions of liberated persons, one devotee of Krsna is perfect.
So to become devotee of Krsna, to understand Krsna, is not very easy job. But Krsna is so kind. He must be kind; His name is Dayalu. Unless He becomes dayalu, how we can live? Eko bahūnam yo vidadhati kaman [Katha Upanisad 2.2.13].
Just like He has little restricted the supply of water. You can see what is the condition-all big, big ministers, they are hanging signboard: "Contribute liberally for the drought-board." And if there is no water, what your the contribution will do? That key is in the hand of Krsna. Do you think that simply by raising fund you will be able to bring water? No. Krsna, or not Krsna directly but Krsna's nature, the material nature, prakrti, she cannot be bribed. She cannot be bribed. She will punish you. If you do not become Krsna conscious, she will punish you.
Maya means this material energy. This material energy is very, very strong. You cannot control the material energy by your so-called scientific method. This is rascaldom. The material nature, you know you can fly a sputnik just like childish play. But to control the material nature, it is not possible. You are under the control of the material nature:
Duratyaya: it is very difficult, unsurpassable. Then how it can be done?
"Simply by surrendering unto Me." Simply by Krsna conscious. That is the whole yoga, I mean to say, Vedic process: how to satisfy Krsna, Visnu. How to satisfy Visnu:
The whole business is yajna, yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra karma-bandhanaḥ [Bg 3.9]. If you don't work for yajna, then you will be entangled. Just like in our state we have to satisfy the government. You cannot do any business, any activity, without the sanction of the government. That will be illegal. Similarly, whatever we do we must do it for the satisfaction of Krsna, or the Visnu. That is Krsna consciousness movement. Krsna consciousness movement is not a bogus movement. It is teaching people that "You try to satisfy the Supreme,"yudhyasva mam anusmara [Bg 8.7], as Krsna advised to Arjuna, that "Because you are in the battlefield, you have to fight." Similarly, we are also in the battlefield of this material world. Manaḥ-sasthanindriyani prakrti-sthani karsati [Bg 15.7], struggle for existence. So that we have to do. Krsna did not say to His friend Arjuna, "My dear Arjuna, you are My so intimate friend, you don't have to struggle, you haven't got to fight. Sit down; I shall do it." No, He never said that. You have to work, you have to fight, but you have to remember Krsna. That is life. That is Krsna consciousness life. We don't say that you give up your business, you give up your profession and become a sannyasi like me. No. Sannyasi required, grhastha required, brahmacari required, vanaprastha required. That is the arrangement, catur-varnyam maya srstam [Bg 4.13].
Just like in your whole body, you require the head, you require the arms, you require the belly, you require the legs. Similarly,
catur-varnyam maya srstamguna-karma-vibhagasaḥ
The human society must be divided into four divisions: the brahmanas, the ksatriyas, the vaisyas and the sūdras. Krsna said, catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma. This is actually planning-not planning, go on planning, and simply levy taxes anytime. Not that planning. This is planning. Krsna's planning…, you take Krsna's planning: the intelligent class must be educated as brahmana: samo, damo, titiksa, arjavam, jnanam, vijnanam, astikyam, brahma karma svabhava-jam [Bg 18.42].
The intelligent class should be trained up in schools, in gurukula, as brahmanas. The next-intelligent class, they should be trained up as ksatriyas, as administrators-not anyone coming from the sūdra quality man, and because he someway or other he gets vote and he becomes the supreme man. What he will do? He is a sūdra. He cannot do administration work. There must be ksatriya training. Ksatriya must be very strong, not to fear in fighting, must be the propensity to rule-there are so many, seven qualification of the ksatriya. Everything is there in the Bhagavad-gita. Who is following? But everyone is saying, "I am a student of Bhagavad-gita. My photograph is with Bhagavad-gita." What is this? Therefore to understand Krsna means to know everything; because Krsna is everything.
So unless you know scientifically things as they are, how you will be happy? Simply jumping like monkey will make you happy? Monkey is very busy, always busy. Whenever you sit down it creates some whatrr-whatrr. Eh? That kind of jumping will not help you. Be sober, be brahmana, take advice from the brahmana, and be ksatriya, really strong to fight the enemy. Not that the king is sitting in his palace smoking, and some poor men are fighting. No. The Battle of Kuruksetra, Arjuna is in the front; the other side, Duryodhana is in the front. The leader must be in the front, the head of the state. That is fight. A poor man will fight, and they will give simply instruction and enjoy. Because they are sūdras, they do not know who will fight. There is a problem in America: they are not getting any person to be ready to fight. Because people have been trained up as sūdra and canḍalas, how they will be prepared to fight? Still in India there are ksatriya families, they are very much enthusiastic to fight. By force you cannot make one fight. He must be very…, straight forward, strong. That is ksatriya. And similarly productive class. There must be food. Krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam vaisya-karma svabhava-jam [Bg 18.44].
Vaisyas, they are not meant for starting big, big mills. Krsi, agriculture; go-raksya. Now cows are being slaughtered, and bring powdered milk from America and start mills here, big, big cloth mills. This is not… Therefore there is no brahmana, no ksatriya, no vaisyas-simply sūdras. Kalau sūdra-sambhava. Kalau sūdra-sambhava. Therefore there is chaos, there is catastrophe.
So immediately there is need of clear-brain brahmanas. Not by birth, but by quality: samo damo titiksa arjavam, like that. So this Krsna consciousness movement is meant for creating a pure class of brahmanas, so that people may take help from them. They can give you instruction how to construct society, how to conduct politics, how to conduct religion, if you follow them. Just like brain: mukha-bahūru-padebhyaḥ. The…, it is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam,
mukha-bahūru-padebhyaḥpurusasyasramaiḥ saha
catvaro jajnire varnagunair vipradayaḥ prthak [SB 11.5.2] The society… You take the whole cosmic manifestation as the virata-rūpa, the gigantic body of God, and in that gigantic body the brahmanas are to be considered as the mukha, the mouth. Therefore according to the Vedic civilization, the qualified brahmanas are invited to take food: brahmana-bhojana. In the Vedic literature you won't find poor feeding. Poor feeding is there; that is secondary. But brahmana-bhojana, because brahmana is considered to be the mouth of the Supreme. So when the brahmanas will take food, it will be recognized, yajna.
So everything is scientifically arranged, and it is described everything in the Bhagavad-gita. Unfortunately, we do not take advantage of it; we are planning our own way how we can be perfect. The perfect plan is crying, "Please take help of me," with the help. But no, we are not prepared to take help from Bhagavad-gita; we have made our own plan, and therefore we are suffering. So it is a very serious condition, so we invite therefore all intelligent class of men, those who are serious about making improvements in the social structure, in the political structure, they should consult this Bhagavad-gitafrom the right person. Everything will be smooth-everything. We can challenge: if you take advantage of this Krsna consciousness movement the whole face of the world will change. Visvam pūrna-sukhayate [Caitanya-candramrta 5]. The whole world will be happy. There is program, and the program is very simple. That is also stated in the Bhagavad-gita:
bhoktaram yajna-tapasamsarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhūtanamjnatva mamsantim rcchati [Bg 5.29] Bhokta, real enjoyer, is Krsna, God. Everything belongs to God. Unfortunately, we are claiming, "This land is mine, Hindustan," "This land is Pakistan," "This land is America." Wherefrom you got it? Everything belongs to Krsna: sarva-loka-mahesvaram. If we accept this principle, then where is the fight? We are all sons of Krsna, and it is Krsna's land. We can live peacefully, Krsna's… God is our father; everything belongs to God. There is ample supply of food. Everything is,
pūrnat pūrnam udacyate
pūrnasya pūrnam adaya pūrnam evavasisyate Everything is perfectly there. I have several times told you, in this planet still there are so many vacant land. If they are properly utilized we can feed ten times population as at present. Ten times. And they say there is scarcity of food. Why scarcity of food? Due to our mismanagement. We are considering, "This is my land," "This is my land," "This is…" Why? Everything Krsna's land, and cultivate it nicely, give protection to the cows, take enough milk, make milk production, produce fruits and vegetables, huge quantities. Where is the scarcity? And there will be no scarcity of rain. Yajnad bhavati parjanyo [Bg 3.14].
The whole cycle is that you have to perform yajna. When you perform yajna, then regular rain will be there, and as soon as there is a regular rain, then you can produce foodstuffs and ample. And as soon as the foodstuff is produced you eat, you become strong, the animals become strong. Then again take ghee and again perform yajna. This is the cycle. This is the cycle. Now we are scientists; we kick out this yajna. We shall manufacture water, we shall manufacture rice. Go on, rising. They are all nonsense.
Therefore Krsna says that one has to understand Krsna. To understand Krsna means to understand everything, because Krsna is everything. Just like yesterday I told you: to water in the root, that means watering the whole tree. So if you understand Krsna, that is also said in the Vedas, yasmin vijnate sarvam idam vijnatam bhavanti [Munḍaka Upanisad 1.3].
If you simply understand Krsna, the Absolute Truth, then other things become automatically understood. Yasmin vijnate sarvam idam vijnatam bhavanti. So simply try to understand Krsna, and everything will be clear, clear conception. Everybody will be nice.
If one becomes devotee-just like these devotees from America and England and Europe: there everyone knows they are meat-eater, they were women-hunters, or drunkard, everything. But as soon as they have become devotee of Krsna they have given up everything. Sarvair gunais tatra sama. Now they are humble, they are chanting Hare Krsna, they are tolerating so many insults-still they are propagating Krsna consciousness. Why? Sarvair gunais tatra samasate suraḥ: all good qualities have developed. By law, legislation, that now in Western countries there is regular advertisement on the cigarette box that it is not good for health. [aside to devotee] What is that?
Devotee: "Smoking cigarettes may be harmful to health."
Prabhupada: That "Smoking is harmful to your health." It is now law there that every cigarette manufacturer must print this on the cigarette box. But they cannot give up cigarettes. The government is trying to give up the cigarette or intoxication. How they can do? It is not possible, because they are not Krsna bhaktas. And as soon as one becomes Krsna bhakta, he kicks out all the cigarette and smoking and drinking and everything. Sarvair gunais tatra samasate suraḥ. This is fact. And harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna [SB 5.18.12]: and one who is not a devotee, he cannot have any good qualities. It is not possible. And some of our students went to see one big svami in New York-I do not wish to name-he was smoking. The svami was smoking, and the student, my student, said that "We do not smoke." So he was a little ashamed. Svami is smoking, svami is drinking, svami is keeping private secretary, women-and still going on svami. Svami means "master." He cannot control his tongue from smoking. As soon as there is some sensation, he requires immediately cigarette-and he has become svami. This is going on. Svami means "master," "controller," because tapasa means controlling. But if you cannot control, if you are your servant…Svami, the opposite word is bhrtya, or servant. Svami means "master" and bhrtya means "servant." So if you are bhrtya of cigarette and drinking tea, how you have become svami? But nobody questions. This is going on. Why? There is no Krsna consciousness; there is no krsna-bhakti. Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna.
If one is not Krsna conscious, he is rascal number one. This is our challenge. I do not say; you'll find in the Bhagavad-gita. It is said,
So our test is little whether he has surrendered to Krsna. If he has not, then we keep him in these four groups. What are these? Na mam… Duskrtino, mūḍha, naradhama, mayayapahrta-jnana. It is not our statement; it is statement of Krsna in the Bhagavad-gita, and we are preaching Bhagavad-gita. This is our test: we have to see whether he is a Krsna conscious person, he is a devotee of Krsna. If he is so, "Welcome. You are my master." Otherwise, you must be within these four groups. What are these? Duskrtino, always sinful; mūḍhaḥ, rascal; naradhama, lowest of the mankind; and mayayapahrta-jnana. And you may say that you have passed this MA examination, BSc examination, but maya has taken away all your knowledge: mayayapahrta-jnana. Why? Asuram bhavam asritaḥ: because your determination is no God. Only this determination will keep you within these four groups. Actually it is a fact, and one who becomes a devotee of Krsna, then all good qualities you will find in him. That is a fact.
Therefore it is very difficult to know Krsna. Krsna says personally,
manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye yatatam api siddhanam kascin vetti mam vetti tattvataḥ [Bg 7.3] We have to understand Krsna in truth, not superficially. "Krsna took His birth as the son of…," that is also nice, but still you have to know. That also somebody said, that there was no Krsna; it is all fictitious. Big, big men, they say. Even the history says, even the history of Kuruksetra. Kuruksetra is still existing. Somebody will say there was no Kuruksetra battle. Somebody will say it is all imagination. Some big scholar has said this Bhagavad-gita is simply mental speculation.
So it is a pity of the situation that we have got such treasure house of knowledge, and spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead; you are neglecting this thing, and you trying to get help from others to improve our position.
Bhiksa mage parer kache,
bhiksa mage parer kache, apana dhana vilaye diye. [Bengali proverb] They have kicked out their own treasure houses, and they are now begging from others. This will not help you. They have to try to understand Krsna, although it is very difficult. But Krsna is giving instruction personally how to understand Him. Therefore He, in the next verse He says,
So bhūmi, bhūmi means land; apo means jala, water. Bhūmir apo 'nalo-fire; bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ-air. The five elements. Then ahahkara-egoism. Then mind, intelligence. Krsna says, "These eight elements, they are material. They are My separated energies, My energy." That is also Krsna's. You cannot claim the bhūmi, the land, yours. It is Krsna's. Have you manufactured this land? Have you manufactured the sea? Why do you claim it is yours? Somebody has manufactured, and that information is here: it is Krsna's. So why you are claiming Krsna's property as your property? If you simply understand this small fact, that I am claiming it is my country, it is my land, it is my water-but none of this belongs to you; you cannot create. You have come as a guest, from the womb of your mother. You have given a seat to stay here for some days. How can you claim that it is your property? How you can claim? What is the reason? If we simply understand this bare facts of life:
Actually have I created the sky? Must have…, somebody must have created. If you say it is nature, no. Nature is dull. Nature cannot work. There must be some worker. Matter, material everything-suppose a big machine, material machine, if there is no worker, how it can work? There is no such instance. But Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita,
"Under My direction the prakrti is working." In the Brahma-samhita it is said,
srsti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-saktir eka
chayeva yasya bhuvanani bibharti durga icchanurūpam api yasya ca cestate sa govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami [Bs 5.44] So we have to study Krsna, because we cannot see Krsna now, although Krsna is present everywhere. One who has got love for Krsna,
One who has got love for Krsna, he sees Krsna here: the Deity. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu, as soon as He saw the Deity of Jagannatha, He immediately fell dead: "Here is My Lord." And who has no love for Krsna, "Ah, these people are worshiping a stone Deity. That's all." He thinks it is stone. And we see as stone-Krsna remains as stone. And one who sees, "Here is my Krsna," He answers his question.
So it requires training. You just try to… Because we have our dull brain, we cannot see subtle things; we see only wood and stone. Therefore Krsna has kindly taken the form of this stone, just to show yourself, "Here I am." Take advantage of it. Because Krsna is also stone. He says bhūmi. Stone means bhūmi. So why He should not appear as stone? Because you cannot see except stone; therefore Krsna appears as stone, for your facility. But don't neglect. This is the beginning, kanistha-adhikari:
If you establish Krsna's mūrti at home and follow as the devotees are following, what is the wrong there? What is the harm there? Krsna can occupy a small place in your room, becoming as small Deity. It will be no expenditure. If you establish a Deity of Krsna and offer aratika and chant Hare Krsna, what is the harm there? Why don't you take up this Krsna consciousness movement? Is it very expensive thing? Everyone can do it. But if you can take up this line of action,
This seva, this service attitude: "Here is Krsna. He has kindly come at home. I am poor man. I cannot decorate the virata-rūpa; therefore Krsna has become four inches." He can become anor aniyan mahato mahiyan [Katha Upanisad 1.2.20]:
He can become the bigger than the biggest and the smaller than the smallest. So we are small; we accept the small. Purchase a small quantity of cloth, make dress, decorate Krsna. It is not expensive. And patram puspam phalam toyam [Bg 9.26].
If you are poor man, if you cannot offer Krsna anything, all right: little leaf, little flower, little water. Krsna says tad aham asnami: "I will eat it." And if Krsna eats on your hand, your life becomes successful. Why don't you take this?
So Krsna consciousness movement is very nice. I shall request everyone to take this movement very seriously, especially in India, the land of God, the land of Krsna. Don't try to neglect it.
Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. [applause] [end]
