om ajhana-timirandhasya jhanahjana-salakaya
caksur unmilitam yena tasmai sri-gurave namaḥ

I was born in the darkest ignorance, and my spiritual master opened my eyes with the torch of knowledge. I offer my respectful obeisances unto him.

Our spiritual master gave us knowledge that was not to be found in books of Sanskrit grammar, nor was it to be realized in meditation on the seashore, but the knowledge which purifies our consciousness was given in the form of words emanating from his lotus mouth. Just as there exist rivers of nectar flowing on the moon planet, so there is a constant flow of nectar from the lotus lips of our Gurudeva. This nectar is now immortalized in the form of "the books of His Divine Grace." We may be reading your books, printing your books, or distributing your books, but we must live by your books, for we know that by your books you are with us and are helping us to fight off the illusory energy.

Knowledge of Krsna, freedom from maya, is such a great gift that it is impossible to repay the benefactor. Prthu Maharaja requested the Kumaras to be satisfied by their own benevolent activities. Srila Prabhupada, we must humbly make a similar request to you. A joker's activities simply around laughter, and anyone who tries to repay the spiritual master becomes a laughingstock just like a joker, because it is not possible to repay such a debt.
