All the living entities in the material world are day and night very busy under the spell of the illusory energy. Seeking for happiness and peace, the living entity experiences different degrees of so-called happiness and distress. Thus wandering from one body to another in 8,400,000 species of life-sometimes accepting the body of a plant or that of an animal or sometimes of a human being or demigod-the living entity completely forgets his eternal relationship with the Lord. Foolishly he is satisfied with his material position, never experiencing the real happiness he is seeking since time immemorial. Trying to establish himself under nice living conditions, all his attempts for happiness are burnt by the all-devouring time.
yam yam artham upadatte duḥkhena sukha-hetave
tam tam dhunoti bhagavan puman chocati yat-krte
tam tam dhunoti bhagavan puman chocati yat-krte
"Whatever is produced by the materialist with great pain and labor for so-called happiness, the Supreme Personality, as the time factor, destroys, and for this reason the conditioned soul laments." (Bhag. 3.30.2)
The burning conditioned soul in the material world may get relief from its distress when getting in contact with the authorized spiritual master who is compared to the cloud that showers rain anywhere without consideration. This "rain" is the causeless mercy of the Lord and it is showered by the causeless mercy of the guru.
samsara-davanala-liḍha-loka-tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatvam
praptasya kalyana-gunarnavasya vande guroḥ sri-caranaravindam

"The spiritual master is receiving benediction from the ocean of mercy. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities."
The acarya can instruct one about the value of human life. There is no need for the disciple to be rich, beautiful or learned. Everyone can become enlightened merely by associating with the bona fide acarya even if devoid of all good qualities. Similarly Narada Muni, when born as a sūdra, became enlightened by the association of great devotees. Acaryavan puruso veda. Simply by associating with devotees of the Lord one will also become a devotee, and one will use this form of life the right way. This human form of life is not meant to be wasted for sense gratification. For that purpose there are so many other forms of life. If at the time of death you can remember the Lord then your life was successful. Otherwise not. All that counts is ante narayana-smrti. Nothing else. This is the teachings of the acaryas. It is our choice to take it or not. When we are sick we consult a physician who can give some good advice. He tells us "do this, don't do that, eat this, don't eat that, etc." If we seriously follow the orders of the physician then we can become cured in due course. But if we don't follow his orders then there is no chance of becoming cured.
Our disease is that we are accepting this material existence as real, but by the instructions of the guru we can become cured and taste real existence manifested in our eternal loving relationship with the Lord. But for that experience full surrender unto the spiritual master's instructions is required. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadaḥ. By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krsna.
Dear Prabhupada, unfortunate as we are, we don't care for your instructions, but instead we are always looking for sense gratification in the material world. When will we become like Srila Rūpa and Srila Sanatana Gosvami? Although being very advanced they considered themselves to be the most fallen, and taking a straw in their mouth they fully surrendered at the lotus feet of their spiritual master, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. That is the behavior of a perfect disciple. Please engage us in your service although we will never attain such qualities as they did. Maybe, gradually we will get purified so that you can bless us with bhaktisakti. Then we could do some minor service for you, namely carry on your message. Gurudeva, we are fools. We are diseased but we reject the help of a physician. How can there be any hope for us? You give us gold but we prefer to take dirt. It is just your mercy that you do not throw us away, although it is a waste of time to care for us.
