We should strictly follow this injunction and never try to hear from Mayavadis, impersonalists, voidists, politicians or so-called scholars. Strictly avoiding such inauspicious association, we should simply hear from pure devotees. Srila Rupa Gosvami therefore recommends, sri-guru-padasrayah: one must seek shelter at the lotus feet of a pure devotee who can be ones guru. Caitanya Mahaprabhu advises that a guru is one who strictly follows the instructions of Bhagavad-gita: yare dekha, tare kaha, krsnaupadesa (Cc. Madhya 7.128). A juggler, a magician or one who speaks nonsense as an academic career is not a guru. Rather, a guru is one who presents Bhagavad-gita, Krsnas instructions, as it is. Sravana is very important; one must hear from the Vaisnava sadhu, guru and sastra.   (More...)
So Krsna is not immoral. Krsna is not engaging Arjuna to commit such sinful activities, svajanam hatva. No. Krsna is engaging him in His service. So one has to understand that. So when Arjuna will understand that "This war, this fighting is not for my sense gratification, it is for Krsna's sense gratification..." Then he agreed, because he is a devotee. Karisye vacanam tava: [Bg. 18.73] "Yes I shall now act." This is the proposition. So atmendriya-trpti-vancha dhare tara nama kama. Kama means lust. What is lust? Lust means whenever you try to satisfy your senses, that is called lust. And the same, whenever you try to satisfy Krsna's senses, that is love. Practically the same business, but personal and Krsna. So Krsna consciousness movement means we have to act everything for Krsna under proper direction. We cannot manufacture that "I am doing for Krsna." Then that is another misleading. Therefore we require the guidance of the spiritual master. Krsna. Guru-krsna-krpaya [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. In the Caitanya-caritamrta, that you have to seek the mercy both of Krsna and guru, not that you have become so advanced that you are directly in connection with Krsna and whatever you are doing, it is mercy. No. Don't think like that. It must be guided, it must be confirmed by guru. Guru-krsna-krpaya paya bhakti-lata-bija [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. Bhakti line is there. So our business is, Krsna consciousness movement is that we have to satisfy Krsna. That reference by that Professor Zaehner, that one rogue, he did by his whims, and he alleged that "After reading Bhagavad-gita violence, he committed this violence." So did he take permission from Krsna or Krsna's representative? But he does not know the technique. He has unnecessarily accused, committed a great offense to the lotus feet of Krsna. So therefore inexperienced persons, they should not try to teach Bhagavad-gita to others because he has no knowledge. This knowledge has to be received by parampara system. Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. So simply by academic career, by knowledge of ABCD, you cannot understand Bhagavad-gita. In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, bhakto 'si priyo 'si me [Bg. 4.3], without becoming bhakta... Therefore Sanatana Gosvami has forbidden that "Don't hear anything about Krsna from a person who is not a Vaisnava." Avaisnava-mukhodgirna-puta-hari-kathamrtam sravanam na karta... This is prohibited. You cannot hear. But this audience or the students, they also do not know that "Here is a rascal, he is not a devotee, he is not a Vaisnava. Why shall we hear from him Bhagavad-gita?" The first condition is bhakto 'si. And the prohibition is also by acaryas. Avaisnava-mukhodgirna-puta-hari-kathamrtam sravanam na kartavyam. Puta-hari-kathamrtam. Hari-katha, talks of Krsna, they are by themselves pure. But still, it is prohibited that if it is spoken by an avaisnava, nondevotee, one should not hear, should not hear. Must immediately reject. First of all, we have to see who is going to speak about Krsna. Is it a devotee of Krsna? Is he a Vaisnava or not? If he is not, then immediately reject: "Oh, we are not going to hear from you." But people do not know. Any rascal speaking about Bhagavad-gita we hear. That is not the process. Then you will misunderstand. Avaisnava-mukhod..., sarpocchistam payo yatha. Just like milk is very good food, everyone knows. But when it is touched by the tongue of the serpent, it is poison immediately. So we cannot drink poison. Don't hear Bhagavad-gita or any talk about Krsna from a person who is not a Vaisnava, who is not a devotee of Krsna. We'll misunderstand. Just like they will say, they will say, "Oh, Krsna is engaging Arjuna for fighting, for committing so many sinful activities." No, that is not the fact. Krsna is engaging Arjuna fighting, to fighting, just to serve His purpose. Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam [Bg. 4.8]. And Arjuna is executing the mission of Krsna not for his personal benefit. These are the things.   (More...)
So the process should be to receive the knowledge by disciplic succession, not sporadically hearing sometimes this scholar, hearing sometimes this scholar. "I interpret in my scholarship." No. This thing will not. Our process is, as directed by Sanatana Gosvami, avaisnava-mukhodgirna-puta-hari-kathamrtam. Hari-katha is amrta. Amrta. But still, it should not be received when it is uttered by some avaisnava. There is another direction: avaisnavo gurur na sa syat. Sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra-visaradah. A person, a brahmana, sat-karma-nipunah. Brahmana's business is become to become scholar and to make others scholar. Pathana pathana yajana yajana. He must be a worshiper and he must teach others how to worship. Pathana pathana yajana yajana dana pratigraha. Brahmana should receive charity and he makes immediately distribute the charity. So these, these are the occupational duty of brahmana. Pathana pathana. Sat-karma, sat-karma-nipunah. A brahmana, he is very expert in his business, sat-karma. Sat-karma-nipuno mantra-tantra-visaradah. And he has read the Vedic literatures and tantras very nicely. Visarada. Still, if he's not a Vaisnava, then avaisnava gurur na sa syat. By that only qualification, that he's not a Vaisnava, he cannot become guru, whereas, on the other hand, sad-vaisnavah sva-pacah guru. If a person, sva-pacah... Sva-pacah means coming of the family of dog-eaters, candala, if he has become a Vaisnava, sadacara-sampanna-vaisnava, sa guruh syat. You can accept him as guru. There are so many instances. Sriman Ramanujacarya's guru was not from a brahmana family, but still, he accepted guru.   (More...)
This is called Vedic knowledge. Exactly what is the fact, that is stated there. So our process of understanding, this Krsna consciousness movementwe do not hear from any bogus person. We hear from Krsna. Therefore Krsna says for us, those who are Krsna conscious, tat samasena me srnu: "From Me because I am the supreme authority, Krsna." Krsna says that mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya: [Bg. 7.7] "There is no more superior authority than Me." So we get knowledge from superior authority. That is the process of acquiring knowledge.   (More...)
So therefore Bhagavan uvaca. We have to hear from Bhagavan, not from rascals. Then your knowledge is perfect. If you hear from rascals, then you become rascal. Don't hear from any rascal. Hear from Bhagavan and take it and accept it. Then, gradually, your existence will be purified. Just like if somebody comes... Recently it so happened. There is a big Mayavadi sannyasi in India. His name is Akshananda Swami. Perhaps you know. Did you know? No. Anyone? Anyway, he is a Mayavadi sannyasi. So Acyutananda Swami went to sell some books in their camp. So his disciple requested him, "Why don't you ask some question from Swamiji?" So he said, "What I have to ask from him?" He was so convinced that "What this rascal can say to me? I know. I have heard from Krsna." This is knowledge. So if you stick to Krsna and hear from Him, you haven't got to hear from any rascal, any rascal. Then you will waste time. Don't hear from any rascal.   (More...)
The sadhus, they are not interested about rhetorical or grammatical adjustment. The sadhu wants to see who has spoken. If he's a Vaisnava, then his word will be accepted. Caitanya Mahaprabhu strictly prohibits that is one is not a Vaisnava, don't hear from him. Avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam, sravanam naiva kartavyam. "But he's such a learned man," or "He's writes so nicely, correctly." But because he's not Vaisnava, one should not hear from him. "Why? It is so nicely written." No. Sarpocchistam yatha payah. Milk is very good food, everyone knows. But as soon as it is touched by the lips of a serpent, it is poison immediately. Therefore it is forbidden. And one who has no knowledge how to respect guru, how he can become Vaisnava? Chadiya vaisnava-seva nistara payeche keba, Narottama dasa Thakura says. If you don't become a faithful servant of Vaisnava, there is no possibility of your liberation. Chadiya vaisnava-seva nistara payecha keba. Tandera carana-sevi-bhakta-sane vasa, janame janame haya ei abhilasa. This is Narottama dasa Thakura's... Our determination should be to serve the previous guru and acarya. Evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. That is our determination. Tandera carana-sevi. Our service... Not directly Krsna. Because to serve Vaisnava is more than serving Krsna directly. Mad-bhakta-pujabhyadhika [SB 11.19.21]. Krsna likes that. He doesn't accept anyone's service directly. That is a gross mistake. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura is teaching us... [break] ...trying to become one with Krsna or one with the gopis. These are all Mayavada philosophy. Tandera carana-sevi. You have to serve the servant of Krsna, tad bhrtya dasa-dasa-dasanudasah [Cc. Madhya 13.80]. That is the way. Not directly.   (More...)
Prabhupada: Oh, that's all right. That's all right. Never mind. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, asat-sanga-tyaga, ei vaisnava-acara [Cc. Madhya 22.87]. Asat-sanga-tyaga, ei vaisnava-acara. He, in one line, He said that "First of all, Vaisnava, his business is to avoid the company of asat." Asat means those who are materialistic interest. Asatah. Asato ma sad gama. This is very important thing. We have established this Krsna consciousness societymeans that to avoid the asat-sanga, to avoid the... Of course, we are preaching Krsna consciousness amongst the people who are interested in material subject matter. But we are not associating with them. We are associating with Krsna, because we don't talk anything except Krsna. We are not interested with their business. Everyone is interested with his own business. Similarly, we are interested with our own business, Krsna consciousness business. Even if we go to a materialistic person, we canvass, "Kindly become our member. Kindly read this book. Purchase this book," so we are not going to take their activities. We are trying to bring them in our activities.   (More...)
So asat-sanga-tyaga, vaisnava-acara. The Vaisnava, he should be always careful not to intermingle, means not to take up their ideas and thoughts. No. That is vaisnava-acara. Asat-sanga-tyaga, ei vaisnava. And why they should be avoided? Asat eka stri-sangi, krsna-abhakta. Who is asat? Asat means those who are very much attached to sense gratification. Sense... The culmination of sense gratification is sex life. So those who are too much attached to sex life, stri-sangi, and krsna-abhakta, and not devotee of Krsna, they are asat. So those who are actually serious to make advance in spiritual life, they should avoid the asat.   (More...)
So if we discriminate like this, then we shall be advancing. Apavarga-vartmani. Taj-josanad asu apavarga-vartmani sraddha bhaktir anukramisyati. Just like if we are diseased, there is infectious disease, epidemic, so we should be careful not to be infected by the infectious disease. Sri Sanatana Gosvami said in Hari-bhakti-vilasa... He has written one book, "The Behavior of the Vaisnava," Hari-bhakti-vilasa. So in that book he has recommended, avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam, sravanam naiva kartavyam. He has said that "One who is not Vaisnava by his behavior, by his action, by his mode of life, if he speaks something from sastra, especially hari-katha..." Hari-katha means Bhagavad-gita, the Puranas, out of which the Bhagavata, Mahapurana. So we should not hear from a professional reader, or avaisnava, or Mayavadi. Caitanya Mahaprabhu has warned, mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa [Cc. Madhya 6.169]. If we hear Bhagavad-gitathat is krsna-katha, hari-kathawe should not hear from the Mayavadis or avaisnava. Then it will not be effective.   (More...)
There are so many Mayavadis and avaisnava, they practically do not accept Krsna even the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and they dare to speak on Bhagavad-gita. Just see the fun. He does not accept Bhagavad-gita as it is, and he wants to comment and give his tika. So you'll never derive any benefit. Therefore here it is said, satam prasangat. You should hear Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam from the devotees, not from a third-class man, no. Third class means those who are materialistic. So therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu has warned that mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa. If you happen to hear from a Mayavadi, impersonalist, who does not accept Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, or does not know what is Krsna, if such person reads Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, you will never derive any benefit. You can go on hearing them for hundreds of years; still, you will never understand what is Krsna. That is forbidden. Sanatana Gosvami has forbidden, that avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam. Hari-katha, talks, discussion on Hari, or Krsna, that is amrta. Amrta means nectarine. If one hears, then he gets his amrta. Amrtatvam.   (More...)
So animitta bhagavati bhaktih siddher gariyasi. That is better than siddhi. Siddhi means self-realization or Brahman realization. Therefore Krsna says also. What Krsna says and what Kapiladeva says, they are the same thing. Therefore here it is also said, bhagavan uvaca. And in the Bhagavad-gita also, you will find, bhagavan uvaca. Never said, krsna uvaca or kapila uvaca, because They are Bhagavan. So those who are self-realized soul, who know what is Bhagavan, so instead of speaking kapiladeva uvaca, he says, Vyasadeva says... Srimad-Bhagavatam is compiled by Srimad Vyasadeva. So as Bhagavad-gita also, it was heard by Arjuna, it was released to Sanjaya, and then, from Sanjaya heard Vyasadeva, and he made it recorded in writing in Mahabharata... So he says, bhagavan uvaca. Bhagavan uvaca means that is the perfect version. There is no mistake. If some ordinary says, there will be so many defects and cheating, because ordinary person has no perfect knowledge. He may be very, very advanced scholar, but that does not mean he is perfect. Perfection is different thing. Perfection means there should be no mistake, no illusion, no cheating, and no imperfections of the senses. That is perfection. And therefore it is said here, bhagavan uvaca. Bhagavan is all-perfect. Therefore we should take knowledge from Bhagavan or one who speaks according to the version of Bhagavan. We should not hear anybody else. That is imperfect.   (More...)
Therefore Krsna said that sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. This cult, who will understand unless he is devotee? A jnani, yogi cannot understand. It is not possible. Because they are not bhakta, they cannot understand Krsna. Bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. Krsna never says, "By jnana or by yoga, by karma one can understand Me." No, that is not possible. Therefore jnani, yogi, karmi, they cannot understand. Therefore they are misled. Maya-mohita. Nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam. Tribhir gunamayair bhavaih. Nabhijanati, they cannot understand. Mam ebhyah param avyayam. So Krsna says, therefore, "Preach this cult amongst the devotees." He never said that "Preach this cult amongst the karmis, amongst the jnanis, amongst the yogis." Because they are very unfortunate, they cannot understand Krsna. Mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa [Cc. Madhya 6.169]. One who comes in touch with the Mayavadi... Mayavadi means one who thinks Krsna is also in maya. That is called Mayavadi. "Krsna's body is also maya." They are called Mayavadi.   (More...)
So Caitanya Mahaprabhu warns that mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa. Anyone who listens to the commentary of the Mayavadi philosopher, then his fate is doomed. He is finished. He will never be able to understand bhakti philosophy. It is so poisonous. Therefore Sanatana Gosvami has warned not to hear from avaisnava about Krsna. There is a very famous Bhagavata reader in Bombay. He is a pakka avaisnava. But he is going on, and he is infusing poisonmeans those who are hearing him, they will never be able to understand what is Krsna. They will never be able. It is so poisonous. Therefore Sanatana Gosvami says, avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam, sravanam na kartavyam: "Avaisnava, who is not Vaisnava, who is not devotee, if he speaks about Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, nonsense..." He will speak nonsense. So it is not good. Avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam, sravanam na kartavyam: "You should never hear." On principle you should avoid hearing from such rascals. This is the injunction of Sanatana Gosvami. "Why? He is speaking Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam. Why one should not hear? Bhagavad-gita is very nice." That's all right. He gives the example, sarpocchistam payo yatha. Milk... Everyone knows milk is very good food. But if it is touched by the lip of a serpent, then it is finished. Then it is finished. He will die. If you take such milk, then your destiny is to death.   (More...)
So samsayatma vinasyati. So it is our business to be very, very careful from understanding spiritual life or devotional life from nondevotee class of men. Nondevotee means one who does not accept Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is nondevotee. Krsna abhakta ara. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was asked by His one devotee, grhastha devotee, that "What is the primary function of a devotee?" So Caitanya Mahaprabhu said in two lines: asat-sanga-tyaga, ei vaisnava-acara [Cc. Madhya 22.87]. Asat. Asat means those who are nondevotees. They are asat. They are asat. Why asat? Because they will remain in this material world. Therefore they are asat. And those who will go to the spiritual, who will be promoted to the spiritual world, back to home, back to Godhead, they are sat, om tat sat, because they are being promoted to the eternal kingdom. That is sat. This is the distinction between asat and sat. Those who will perpetually remain within this material world, they are called asat. The karmis, jnanis, and yogis. Yogis, they... Just like... What is that big yogis? That rsi, great rsi?   (More...)
Professional men are useless because they are neither self-realized nor interested in the liberation of the audience. They are simply interested in maintaining the material establishment of family attachment and earning some material benefits out of the profession.
Cheap devotees or materialistic devotees of the Lord are very much desirous to see the Lord personally without meeting the requisite qualifications. Such third-grade devotees should know well that material attachment and seeing the Lord face to face cannot go together. It is not such a mechanical process that the professional Bhagavatam reciters can do the job on behalf of the third-grade materialistic pseudo-devotee. The professional men are useless in this connection because they are neither self-realized nor interested in the liberation of the audience. They are simply interested in maintaining the material establishment of family attachment and earning some material benefits out of the profession. Maharaja Pariksit had no more than seven days to live, but for others Maharaja Pariksit personally recommends that one hear Srimad-Bhagavatam regularly, nityam, always by one's own effort and with serious devotion also. That will help one to see the Lord Sri Krsna manifested in one's heart within no time.   (More...)
The materialist wants to derive some material benefit from his so-called hearing of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Undoubtedly such an audience, hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from the professional men, can derive some material benefit, but that does not mean that such a pretense of hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam for a week is as good as the hearing of Mahārāja Parīkṣit.
The hearing of Srimad-Bhagavatam performed by professional men is different from the transcendental hearing of Maharaja Pariksit. Maharaja Pariksit was a soul realized in the Absolute Truth, Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead. The fruitive materialist is not a realized soul; he wants to derive some material benefit from his so-called hearing of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Undoubtedly such an audience, hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam from the professional men, can derive some material benefit as they desire, but that does not mean that such a pretense of hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam for a week is as good as the hearing of Maharaja Pariksit.   (More...)
It is the duty of the sane to hear Srimad-Bhagavatam from a self-realized soul and not be duped by professional men. One should continue such hearing till the end of one's life so that one can actually have the transcendental association of the Lord and thus be liberated simply by hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam.   (More...)
