Notes for British Users
Although many American and British units of measure have the same names, not all are identical. In general, the weights are identical but the volumes are not.
The British fl oz is 1.04 times the American fl oz. So the standard Imperial 1/2-pint measuring cup holds 10 fl oz (10.4 American oz), whereas the standard American 1/2-pint measuring cup holds 8 American fl oz. To obtain accurate
• British pint measures, convert American cups into American fl oz using the table given on page 299. Then convert American fl oz into British pints.
• The American standard tablespoon holds 14.2 ml, and the British standard tablespoon holds 17.7 ml. In England use 3/4 tablespoon for every American tablespoon. A teaspoon holds approximately 5 ml in both countries.
