nama om visnu-padaya krsna-presthaya bhū-tale
srimate bhaktivedanta-svamin iti namine
namas te sarasvate deve gaura-vani-pracarine
nirvisesa-sūnyavadi-pasatya-desa-tarine
We, who are the lowest of the world, fall down at the dust before your lotus feet on this auspicious day, Srila Prabhupada! We are overcome with mixed joy and remorse on celebrating your appearance day and by remembering your untimely departure. You so kindly descended from within the circle of Krsna's most confidential associates into our own midst. You showed us the way back to Godhead. Now you have returned to your eternal lila with Krsna. If we want to again enjoy your transcendental association, we have no other alternative than to fully traverse the perfect path of bhakti taught by you.
Previously, we were being directly guided by you. This process is technically called sravana-kirtana. Sravana means aural reception from the superior spiritual authority, and kirtana means to act according to what one has heard. When one hears the philosophy of Krsna consciousness and wholeheartedly takes it up, the next stage will automatically follow-that is called smarana, or remembering. This smarana means first of all to always remember the instructions of the guru, then one will naturally remember Krsna. How perfectly we have practiced sravana-kirtana will now be tested by how perfectly we can effectualize guru-vani-smarana.
One day in 1969, you were sitting in your room at 26 Second Ave., New York. There were only five devotees present, and you were explaining the significance of the guru-parampara. you said, "The chain of disciplic succession is just like an electric wire. The power is coming down from the powerhouse through the wire right into your room, so that you can plug into it. There may be so many holes in the wall, but if you contact them you will not get any result. If, however, you touch the bona fide outlet, you will immediately feel the power. That is the proof-you will immediately feel that the power is there. I am such a bona fide outlet."
We are thankful for having heard these words from your lotus lips and we pray that we may yet be able to fully realize them by completely surrendering to you.
