NEW YORK
yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadaḥ
In February 1975, Srila Prabhupada entered the temple room of ISKCON Atlanta. He sat on the vyassana and started to speak as he looked at the Gaura-Nitai Deities. All he could say was, "Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda are extremely merciful." He repeated it and started to cry and left us there in amazement. He couldn't say anything more. He went back to his quarters and we were stupified. A few days later I asked Srila Prabhupada, "What pleases you the most?" Very dramatically with a voice filled with humility and love he replied, "If you love Krsna." Till this day I am trying to understand the significance of that profound statement. In the adi Purana we find this verse: "Lord Krsna told Arjuna, 'Those who are My direct devotees are actually not my devotees, but those who are the devotees of My servant are factually My devotees.'"
Dear Srila Prabhupada, how do we become your devotee? Srila Bhaktivinoda gives the hint. We should try to become like a dog in strictly following the instructions of the spiritual master. When one becomes serious to follow the mission of the spiritual master, his resolution is tantamount to seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A devoted disciple of the spiritual master would rather die with the spiritual master than fail to execute the spiritual master's mission. Just as Krsna comes down to earth to reestablish the principles of religion, so His representative, the spiritual master, also comes to reestablish religious principles. It is the duty of the disciples to take charge of the mission of the spiritual master and execute it properly. In other words, to execute the will of the spiritual master, the disciple should be prepared to lay down his life and abandon all personal considerations.
The mission of the spiritual master is clearly defined. The words Paramatma-upakara mean "to execute missionary activities for the ultimate benefit of all people." Lord Caitanya declares,
ataeva ami ajna dilun sabakare
yahan tahan prema-phala deha' yare tare
"Therefore I order every man within this universe to accept this Krsna consciousness movement and distribute it everywhere." (Cc. adi. 9.36)
yare dekha, tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara' ei desa
"Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Sri Krsna as they are given in Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way, become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land." (Cc. Madhya 7.128)
The word kriyasu, meaning "by manual labor" or "by work" can help us to understand the mission of the spiritual master very practically. One should engage in practical service to the Lord. In ISKCON all our activities are concentrated upon distributing Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. This is very important. One may approach any person and induce him to read Krsna literature so that in the future he may also become a devotee. Such activities will always remind us of the Lord's lotus feet. By fully concentrating on distributing books for Krsna one is fully absorbed in Krsna. This is samadhi.
Therefore, the devotees of New York Mandira desire to be most faithful servants of their servants of their spiritual master by being obedient and hard working in executing the mission of the spiritual master, always extolling his qualities and instructions and remembering his glorious pastimes constantly. Param vijayate sri-krsna-sahkirtanam.
