"I then passed alone through many forests of bamboo, sharp grass, weeds and caves, which were very difficult to go through alone. I visited deep, dark and dangerously fearful forests, which were the play yards of snakes, owls and jackals." (Bhag. 1.6.13)
The duty of the parivrajakacarya (mendicant) is to travel everywhere and enlighten the inhabitants of the earth with the message of God. You, Srila Prabhupada, because you took the order of your spiritual master as your life and soul, left your blissful bhajana-kutira (place of prayer) in Vrndavana, the serene land of Lord Krsna's birth and pastimes, and at an age when ordinary men do not venture forth from their sitting rooms and front porches, came alone to the deep, dark and dangerously fearful concrete forests of the naked city.
O swanlike one, since that blessed beginning in New York you have been miraculously snatching countless conditioned souls from jackallike lives, dousing the raging forest fire of material existence with showers of your mercy and nectarous wisdom. Unto such a spiritual master I offer my obeisances again and again and again and again.
On this holy occasion of the anniversary of your appearance, our prayer is to be blessed with one dram from your fountain of courage, one drop from your sea of conviction, one speck of dust from your ever-traveling lotus feet. May we not fear the weeds and caves, strange and dangerous places, but push on and on, following in your unfailing footsteps, to inundate with love of Krsna, every town and village.
