Dear Srila Prabhupada,
Every living being in the world today is in darkness, forced to struggle hard for nonpermanent goals and for relief from the continual onslaught of the miseries of material life. You have the power to free us from this oppressive bondage, and because you are a pure devotee of Lord Caitanya, you are imbued with the divine characteristic of unlimited mercy for the fallen souls. Your blessings have been received by hundreds of millions of people, and the entire course of history is being changed by your inconceivable powers and your pure love for Krsna. Generally, "in this iron Age of Kali men have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed." (Bhag. 1.1.10) Their health and life-span is reduced because of irregular habits, overeating, indulgence in sense gratification, overdependence on another's mercy and artificial standards of living-all of which weaken and waste their vital energy. Their laziness especially refers to spiritual practices, due to illusory bodily misidentification. Because everyone's mind is victimized by many diversions of politics, cinema, sports, gambling, clubs, mundane libraries, bad association, smoking, drinking, cheating, pilfering, quarrelling, etc., they are always disturbed and full of anxieties. The whole world atmosphere is surcharged with faithlessness, lying propaganda and the strain of competition for sense gratification, enmity and war. Despite external appearances, it is impossible for any person to independently achieve happiness, peace of mind, and freedom from the suffering inflicted by this distorted way of life.
When Raghunatha dasa finally escaped from his family and achieved shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya, the Lord told him, "The mercy of Lord Krsna is stronger than anything else. Therefore the Lord has delivered you from the ditch of materialistic life, which is like a hole into which people pass stool." (Cc. Antya 6.193) Lord Caitanya emphasized that a life of material comfort is like a ditch of stool, and anyone addicted to the materialistic way of life is like a worm living in stool. Even though it is abominable, the worm cannot give up the stool, and similarly even though material life is wretched, the poor living entity cannot get out of this filthy entanglement. Only the mercy of Krsna can save one from such misery!
At the beginning of the Kali-yuga, the sages at Naimisaranya, who had gathered to perform sacrifices to counteract the degrading influence of the age, questioned Sūta Gosvami how people would be able to receive the mercy of Krsna since the Lord had left the world for His own transcendental abode. Sūta Gosvami answered that in this age the mercy of the Lord would be delivered to all people through transcendental books. "This Bhagavat Purana is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Krsna to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the Age of Kali shall get light from this Purana."
Srila Prabhupada, your books have descended from the spiritual world and are full of the all-powerful potencies of the Personality of Godhead. They are nondifferent from Krsna and contain all His mercy. When your disciples voluntarily approach the fallen souls to distribute these books, and engage them in giving a donation and taking a book, their lives become perfect because they have received the inconceivable mercy of the Lord. Simply by giving a donation or taking a book they have begun their favourable association with Your Divine Grace, the spiritual master of the universe, and they become infected, by your blessings, with divine, transcendental qualities, beginning with the affinity to hear about Krsna, to associate with His devotees, etc. Anyone who engages in Lord Caitanya's sankirtana movement in this way receives your transcendental blessings because you are the ocean of mercy. In this way, millions of people are taking your books every year and are receiving the seed of devotional life and love for Krsna. It appears externally that you are in India or America, but actually you are in the spiritual world, eternally bestowing your blessings on all who come in contact with you. You are so powerful that simultaneously millions of living entities in all different parts of the world can receive your blessings at once through these books. Who can know your real position or the extent of your power? It is said in the Adi-lila that, "The internal devotees or potencies are all eternal associates in the pastimes of the Lord. Only with them does the Lord advent to propound the sankirtana movement, only with them does the Lord taste the mellow of conjugal love, and only with them does He distribute this love of God to people in general." (Adi 7.18-19) Lord Caitanya has sent you to this world to establish his mission and change the entire world order. All His desires are being fulfilled by you, and the earth planet is becoming a gateway for all the inhabitants of this universe to return to Krsnaloka. Just to receive your blessings the demigods on the heavenly planets are waiting in line to take birth here. This glorious day of your appearance in the world will be forever celebrated as the most significant transcendental event in the history of Lord Caitanya's movement, for you have transformed the world's karma and re-established spiritual life. In great awe and reverence I fall at your lotus feet and beg to be engaged by you in helping distribute your books in every village and town, for as long as you'll allow me this privilege.
