[01:10] [Prabhupada:] Nasta-prayesv abhadresu [SB 1.2.18]. Abhadra. Abhadra, in human understanding, means it is not civilized.
[01:30] In your country we say "the gentleman." So that gentleman, he is called bhadra,
[01:43] and in India the gentleman is considered as bhadra.
[01:50] So all of us, unless we become Krsna conscious, will not be bhadra:
[02:04] abhadra. Not cultured[?]. When one comes to Krsna consciousness, then he is supposed to be cultured.
[02:22] So, this culture, Krsna culture, means to hear about Krsna.
[02:34] Simply hearing, as you are hearing, this is Krsna culture.
[02:43] You haven't got to do anything; simply come here and sit properly and hear about Krsna.
[02:53] This is Krsna culture.
[02:56] You haven't got to exercise your breathing. No. Just sit down like gentlemen and hear about Krsna.
[03:09] This is very important process.
[03:13] That we have already discussed. Srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ .
[03:27] Simply if anyone agrees to hear about Krsna, then life becomes [indistinct].
[03:39] That's all. You have nothing to do.
[03:50] Our process is this: please come here. Hear about Krsna, and take a little prasadam. [indistinct]
[04:04] Krsna is so kind that as soon as you begin to hear about Krsna, immediately you
[04:11] draw attention of Krsna. Srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ.
[04:19] Even Krsna's attention is not drawn, still, simply by hearing and chanting
[04:24] you become perfect, purified. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Siksastaka 1]. This is the process.
[04:32] So when this process is adopted, and it is not even finalized perfectly, still, you get the benefit.
[04:56] Still you get the benefit.
[05:01] Suppose you have to attend lecture and hearing for hundred times,
[05:09] suppose you have done only one or two times, still you get the benefit.
[05:16] Not a single part of it is ever [wasted].
[05:22] In the sastra it is said, if by some sentiment, tyaktva sva-dharmam caranambujam harer …
[05:30] Just like in our association, in the Society, many men come, join,
[05:40] not exactly understanding what is Krsna consciousness. But out of sentiment,
[05:47] "Let us join." He doesn't know. He gives up his own duty, tyaktva sva-dharmam.
[06:06] Tyaktva means "giving up," and sva-dharmam, sva-dharmam means "occupational duty."
[06:16] Everyone has got occupational duties.
[06:20] Generally, according to Vedic civilization, occupational duties are
[06:28] divided according to quality.
[06:31] That is also in the present age also. If one man is qualified as a medical man,
[06:40] he is allowed to practice as a medical man. If one man is qualified as an engineer…
[06:46] So every man has got some occupational duty.
[06:51] So, sastra says that out of sentiment he gives up his occupational duty,
[07:00] tyaktva sva-dharmam caranambujam harer,
[07:06] and takes to this Krsna consciousness movement, "Let me join this…"
[07:14] That's all right. If anyone has joined this Krsna consciousness movement,
[07:19] let him become perfect. But it is sometimes so happens that bhajann apakvo 'tha patet tato yadi , the culture is not completed.
[07:37] But by some bad association… Bad association is already there,
[07:44] because the whole material nature is bad. It is not good.
[07:53] So if one has joined the Krsna consciousness movement,
[07:59] and let him execute the rules and regulation, then he's making progress.
[08:05] There's no doubt about it.
[08:07] But somehow or other, even if he falls from Krsna consciousness,
[08:14] sastra says here that what is the apakvaḥ, what is wrong in that, even if he has fallen down.
[08:27] And a person who is occupied, or engaged in his occupational duties very nicely,
[08:34] what is the gain?
[08:37] So just try to understand. Just like one person out of sentiment gives up his occupational duty
[08:45] and joins Krsna consciousness movement and cannot make it perfect
[08:54] while in Krsna consciousness movement falls down-there are many instances-
[09:01] still he has no loss. And this man who is very dutiful,
[09:08] and is exactly, nicely executing his occupational duty, what is the gain? Just try to understand.
[09:21] So if this man who has joined Krsna consciousness out of sentiment,
[09:31] even if he has fallen down, whatever he has done, that is permanent asset.
[09:38] If he has done one percent, that one percent perfection is guaranteed.
[09:46] Then next life he'll begin from this second step. It is so nice.
[09:54] Therefore here it is said, nasta-prayesv abhadresu.
[10:00] Not that his inauspicity of material existence is completely finished.
[10:07] Even it is finished to a certain percentage, not a hundred percent, so then what is the result?
[10:23] The result is the bhagavaty uttama-sloke bhaktir bhavati naisthiki.
[10:30] He becomes a bona fide attached devotee, although he cannot execute properly,
[10:38] somehow or other he falls down, nasta prayesu. Prayesu means almost, not cent percent
[10:48] It is so nice. You begin with simply hearing and, even if you fall down, still it is beneficial.
[11:02] Therefore we should take chance of this hearing of krsna-katha as soon as possible.
[11:11] And we shall preach also like that. It is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's order,
[11:23] Caitanya Mahaprabhu was touring all over, and somebody became Vaisnava simply by seeing Him,
[11:32] by hearing Him, a man became a Vaisnava.
[11:37] He was so... He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He had so much power.
[11:42] So some of them wanted to come to Caitanya Mahaprabhu and surrender everything.
[11:49] [indistinct] Caitanya Mahaprabhu said,
[11:55] "No. You remain in your present condition. There is no need of coming to Me.
[12:02] But you become a spiritual master." This is wanted.
[12:09] "Every one of you become a spiritual master," Caitanya Mahaprabhu said.
[12:17] Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, amara ajnaya: "By My order."
[12:21] You cannot become spiritual master all of a sudden.
[12:25] There must be order from the superior person. Superior to you.
[12:32] If you say that "Now you can make your disciples," then you can do.
[12:43] This is the [indistinct].
[12:47] That means, when one has received order from the spiritual master,
[12:54] he can do. But the order is open.
[13:00] Order is open, but it must be executed properly, as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu says.
[13:13] There is no need of going out of home, out of country. Any place you are situated has got [indistinct].
[13:23] That is also supported by Bhagavata: sthane sthitaḥ sruti-gatam tanu-vah-manobhir [SB10.14.3].
[13:30] You remain in your position. There is no need of changing your position,
[13:36] but if order is given through the words of Krsna, or through the words of
[13:43] representative of Krsna, then your life will be successful.
[13:51] This is explained here. The more you hear, the more you will become advanced.
[13:59] Practically we are seeing all our devotees, in the beginning, and now
[14:07] there is much difference. How the difference is coming? Simply by hearing.
[14:15] Sruti. Sruti means hearing.
[14:21] So our movement, this Krsna consciousness movement, does not say
[14:26] that you give up your occupational duty, give up your home, give up your family. No.
[14:34] There are many grhastas, as we have got.
[14:38] Bhaktivinoda Thakura especially is here. He was a grhastha.
[14:44] He did not give up his home, nor, neither his job. He was a magistrate, government officer,
[14:55] but he became a great devotee, by culture. What is that culture? Krsna-katha.
[15:05] Simply he was coming from his office, say, five or six in the evening, and
[15:13] immediately he would eat some [indistinct] food, and go take rest.
[15:23] Then he would rise up, at three or five and begin writing books.
[15:33] So he give us so many nice books. Caitanya Siksamrta he gave us especially,
[15:42] and many song books in Bengali, in English, and some of them in Sanskrit.
[15:51] So he was in this way engaged. So if anyone wants to serve Krsna,
[15:58] Bhaktivinoda Thakura's life is good example.
[16:01] Even by becoming a responsible government officer, he could become a very, very idea guru-
[16:09] provided he wants to carry out the order of his spiritual master.
[16:22] Bhagavata, this word comes from the word bhagavat, or bhagavan.
[16:29] Bhagavan means the Supreme Being, full of six opulences.
[16:37] Opulence is called bhaga. So, the Supreme Person is endowed with full six kinds of opulence.
[16:47] That is called bhagavan. Every word in Sanskrit has got root meaning.
[16:54] Bhaga means "fortune" or "opulence," and bhaga-vat...
[16:59] Vata is used in the sense of possession.
[17:04] When you possess something, then this word, this affix, is there, vata.
[17:14] And vata [indistinct], becomes van. [indistinct]
[17:23] Bhaga, "opulence," and van-bhagavan. This is analysis.
[17:30] And in connection with Bhagavan, the word bhagavata.
[17:37] So this book Bhagavata, and the devotee is also bhagavata.
[17:44] So you will have to serve this book as well as the person,
[17:51] the person bhagavata. That is also confirmed in the Caitanya-caritamrta:
[18:01] That bhagavata, person bhagavata, is guru, the spiritual master. And Krsna… Krsna, guru-krsna.
[18:12] You have to take favor, mercy, of both of them.
[18:19] If you simply think that "I will take the mercy of my guru," and don't care for Krsna, no.
[18:30] You have to take favor of Krsna or, if you take the favor of guru,
[18:37] then automatically you get the favor of Krsna. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado.
[18:44] If you please your guru, that means Krsna is pleased. Just like you have got small child on your lap.
[18:56] If somebody pleases the small child, then automatically you become pleased.
[19:04] Just like there is a proverb, "If you love me, love my dog."
[19:09] Similarly, if you love the dog of Krsna, the servant of Krsna,
[19:15] who is always engaged in the service of Krsna, then Krsna becomes more pleased.
[19:27] ...love of Godhead, feeling, emotion for Krsna,
[19:39] Therefore you will see that if you attend regularly the classes and hear about Krsna,
[19:46] then you will become advanced in Krsna consciousness.
[19:51] Bhaktir bhavati naisthiki [SB 1.2.18]. Naisthiki means unflinching, fixed up; and bhakti, devotional service. [indistinct]
[20:03] Bhakti means bhagavati. This word bhakti is used only in connection with Bhagavan.
[20:12] There are so many bhaktis, they are manufactured.
[20:16] One is devoted to his family, one is devoted to his dog, one is devoted to his country, society.
[20:24] There are different types of attachment. But here it is said, bhakti bhagavati.
[20:33] Bhakti, when you engage your attachment to Bhagavan, the Supreme Person, then it is…
[20:39] Bhakti, bhagavan and bhakta. Bhagavan is there, and bhakta is there,
[20:46] and that transaction between Bhagavan and bhakta, that is called bhakti.
[20:53] The impersonalist cannot understand what is bhakti, because there is no duality.
[21:02] They do not believe in duality: Bhagavan and bhakta.
[21:07] They believe that everything is one.
[21:11] There is no question of bhakti in the impersonalist philosophy of monism.
[21:17] Bhakti is possible in duality. Nityo nityanam, that is the Vedic version.
[21:26] Nitya, the Supreme Being, and the subordinate beings.
[21:30] The subordinate beings are engaged in the service of the Supreme Being. That is called bhakti.
[21:38] So in order to attain the perfection of this bhakti, devotional service,
[21:46] one has to begin with srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ , and by hearing
[21:52] and hearing, nasta-prayesv abhadresu. Abhadra, "inauspicious desire."
[22:04] What is that inauspicious desires? The karmis... One who wants to become happy
[22:11] by working hard in this material world, they are called karmis.
[22:17] Everyone is trying, earning more money, more money, more money.
[22:23] Diva carthehaya rajan kutumba-bharanena va [SB 2.1.3]. Diva, business. The karmis' business is,
[22:32] in the daytime he's engaged diva. Carthehaya, divaca artha ihaya, "Where is money? Where is money?"
[22:43] In your country especially, big, big cities,
[22:46] all nice motorcars are driving this way and that way. What is the purpose?
[22:52] "Where is money? Where is money? Where is money?" Diva carthehaya rajan.
[23:00] Then if you have got money, then what do you do? Kutumba-bharanena. Kutumba means family:
[23:07] wife, children, relatives also, how to provide them, how to give them some money,
[23:13] how to give them place, good food.
[23:18] Or countrymen, kutumba-bharanena.
[23:22] The whole day is spoiled in this way, by driving car this way and that way, earning money, lots.
[23:30] Then, for maintenance of the family. Then remains what is at night?
[23:39] Nidraya hriyate naktam [SB 2.1.3], night for sleeping or vyavayena ca va vayaḥ, for sex life.
[23:49] So this is the business of karmis. At night, sleeping or sex life,
[23:55] and at daytime, get money and spend it more.
[24:01] Then where is Krsna consciousness? Where is Krsna consciousness?
[24:07] Very difficult for the karmis.
[24:10] Therefore, the karmis are described in the sastras: mūḍha.
[24:15] Mūḍha means the ass. Why the ass? They are so intelligent, working hard. What for?
[24:24] Sense gratification. Nūnam pramattaḥ kurute vikarma yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti .
[24:33] Their business is they have become mad to earn money and spend. Nūnam pramattaḥ.
[24:41] What is the purpose? Sense gratification. In France, in Paris,
[24:49] old men, seventy-five years old, eighty years old, they go to the nightclub.
[24:58] They purchase ticket to enter the nightclub, fifty dollars.
[25:02] Then they select their co-partner and wine bottles, another three hundred dollars.
[25:13] So this is the karmi life. He does not know that "Why I am laboring so hard,
[25:22] and why I am spending money unnecessarily in sense gratification?"
[25:27] Mudho 'yam nabhijanati mam ebhyaḥ param avyayam.
[25:33] Everything is there in our literature.
[25:36] Read Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam carefully, and life will be successful.
[25:41] So, here one thing is suggested: nityam bhagavata-sevaya.
[25:47] Daily. Daily read Bhagavatam, and try to serve the person bhagavatam,
[25:57] your spiritual master. You just carry his order. Whatever he says, just try to obey.
[26:04] Otherwise, life is spoiled. Adau gurv-asrayaḥ [Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu].
[26:10] Our bhakti-marga is, first business is, adau gurv-asrayaḥ, sad-dharma-prccha.
[26:17] The first beginning is to accept the spiritual master and inquire from him
[26:22] about advancement of spiritual life and abide by that.
[26:27] This is called bhagavata-sevaya. Nityam bhagavata. So it is to be done regularly, nityam bhagavata.
[26:33] Then bhagavaty uttama-sloke. Uttama. Uttama means "transcendental."
[26:41] Ut means "transcending," and tama, tama means "darkness."
[26:49] Tama means "darkness of ignorance"; also this material world. Tama.
[26:54] It is dark. Because it is dark, therefore this..., Krsna has given us the sun or the moon.
[27:01] Without sun, without moon, it is dark. Just like at night it is dark.
[27:07] That is its natural position. Therefore it is called tama. Tama means "darkness of ignorance."
[27:15] So Bhagavan is uttama. Uttama means "above this darkness."
[27:24] There is another kingdom, or another nature, which is not tama, dark.
[27:32] That is stated in Upanisad.
[27:35] There is no need of sunshine. There is another nature. This nature doesn't need of sunshine.
[27:43] Na yatra bhasayate sūryaḥ: where there is no need of sunshine, there is no need of moonlight,
[27:53] there is no need of electricity. There is. Na tad bhasayate sūryo na sasahko na pavakaḥ [Bg. 15.6].
[28:02] You can find this, Bhagavad-gita.
[28:05] There, there is no need of these things, lighting, because as here in this
[28:12] universe we have got only one planet shining, this sun planet,
[28:20] in the spiritual world, all the Vaikuntha planets, they're shining.
[28:27] And because all of them shining, the whole nature there is shining.
[28:31] That is called brahma-jyoti. So we have got all the information
[28:40] what the spiritual world, what is the material world, why we are
[28:44] in the material world, why we are subjected under birth, death, old age and disease.
[28:52] So, as we go on hearing, nityam bhagavata... In the Bhagavata, we hear everything, completely.
