[52:54 minutes]
[18:50] [Prabhupada:] [indistinct] Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. [indistinct] Srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ.
[20:17] [Nitai:] Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya.
[20:37] [leads chanting of verse] Srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ punya-sravana-kirtanaḥ, hrdy antaḥ-stho hy abhadrani vidhunoti suhrt satam. [break]
[21:45] [leads chanting of synonyms] kirtanaḥ-chanting; hrdi antaḥ sthaḥ-within one's heart; hi-certainly; abhadrani-desire to enjoy matter; vidhunoti-cleanses; suhrt-benefactor; satam-of the truthful.
[22:12] "Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead, who is the Paramatma [Supersoul] in everyone's
[22:18] heart and the benefactor of the truthful devotee, cleanses the desire for material enjoyment
[22:25] from the heart of the devotee who relishes His messages,
[22:30] which are in themselves virtuous when properly heard and chanted."
[22:44] [Prabhupada:] Srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ punya-sravana-kirtana, ḥhrdy antaḥ-stho hy abhadrani vidhunoti suhrt satam.
[23:01] Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, suhrdam sarva-bhūtanam.
[23:12] Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram,
[23:18] suhrdam sarva-bhūtanam jnatva mam santim rcchati [Bg. 5.29].
[23:23] This is the way of santi. Santi means peacefulness.
[23:32] How it is? Not by this peace treaty.
[23:40] That kind of santi, or peace, is going on perpetually, and there is never santi.
[23:47] It is simply formality.
[23:50] Santi cannot be attained without Krsna consciousness.
[23:56] Peacefulness is not possible.
[24:00] Temporary, you can make some arrangement, but it has no value.
[24:08] Even amongst the relatives-father and the son or husband and wife, brother and brother-
[24:19] there is no peace.
[24:21] Everywhere there is some disagreement and separation.
[24:28] This is the law of the material world, not of the spiritual world.
[24:35] Spiritual world, there is santi.
[24:40] The material world: envious.
[24:45] If you improve more than me, I will become your enemy.
[24:52] This is the nature of material life.
[24:57] Therefore the bhagavata-dharma, or the cult of Srimad-Bhagavatam,
[25:06] is not meant for the materialistic person.
[25:11] It is for the person who is spiritually interested.
[25:19] Spiritually interested means he is a paramahamsa.
[25:25] Parama means the supreme, and hamsa, hamsa means the swan.
[25:37] Paramahamsa means the supreme swan.
[25:43] What is the special qualification of the swan?
[25:48] That if you give the swan to drink milk mixed with water,
[25:59] it has got a special power; she will drink the milk portion, and the water portion will not touch.
[26:08] Hamsa. And paramahamsa means the person who knows what is the essence of this material world.
[26:22] He is called paramahamsa-who knows.
[26:27] Just like we are all living entities. You have got your body; I have got my body; everyone has got his body.
[26:41] But what is the essence of this body?
[26:45] The essence of this body is the life.
[26:51] If there is no life, you may have a very nice, beautiful body, I may have very strong, beautiful body,
[26:59] but as soon as the life is gone, it has no meaning.
[27:05] Therefore the essence of the body is the life.
[27:12] Similarly, this big, gigantic body, cosmic manifestation, there is also life.
[27:22] Otherwise, how it is going on?
[27:25] Anyone can understand this philosophy,
[27:29] that this body is very important, belonging to such-and-such great personality, scientist
[27:38] or philosopher, politician, whatever it may be-but so long the life is there.
[27:47] Otherwise, no more politician, no more scientist, no more rich man.
[27:55] Similarly, it is very simple to think: unless there is life within this cosmic manifestation,
[28:04] how things are going on so nicely?
[28:07] So one who is interested with that essence of this gigantic cosmic manifestation,
[28:16] he is called paramahamsa.
[28:19] He is no more interested in any other thing.
[28:23] Active principle. What is the active principle?
[28:28] Just like medical science, they take active principle from a drug.
[28:37] Similarly, those who are paramahamsa, they can understand
[28:45] that what is the active principle of this cosmic manifestation.
[28:49] There must be some. Must be some. There is no doubt.
[28:55] But one who is interested knows this.
[28:58] Therefore in the beginning of the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said,
[29:05] dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo 'tra paramo nirmatsaranam satam, vastavam atra vedam atra .
[29:15] Here in the Srimad-Bhagavatam the so-called religious principles... [break]
[29:27] ...anadir adir govindaḥ sarva-karana-karanam.
[29:34] So with this idea, to become paramahamsa,
[29:38] or to understand the central point... Because if you simply understand
[29:45] the central point, then everything is understood. That is Vedic injunction.
[29:52] Yasmin vijnate sarvam evam vijnatam bhavanti [Munḍaka Upanisad 1.3].
[29:58] If you simply understand Krsna, then everything becomes understood.
[30:04] It is so nice. Yasmin vijnate, by understanding the Absolute Truth, Krsna,
[30:12] sarvam evam vijnatam bhavati, everything becomes understood.
[30:23] Just like one big scientist, our disciple Dr. Svarūpa Damodara dasa, M.S. Ph.D.,
[30:37] he has dedicated his very advanced scientific book...
[30:43] We cannot even utter the words. [indistinct] analysis, [indistinct] analysis, [indistinct] analysis.
[30:53] So he is a big, big scientist, admitted by many universities:
[31:00] Harvard University, Calcutta University,
[31:03] here in Boston University and, then again, California University.
[31:10] He is not ordinary man. But he admits in his dedication that
[31:19] "I dedicate this book to my spiritual master, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada,
[31:25] because he has given me the real knowledge, that Krsna is the origin of everything."
[31:33] Now, I am not a scientist. I am not a scientist, but I could teach a scientist, or convince him,
[31:44] that Krsna is the origin, the origin of everything.
[31:48] And unless he is convinced that Krsna is the origin of everything, how he has written this?
[31:54] So many scientists will challenge him, but he is prepared to accept the challenge.
[32:00] So, how it was possible for me to convince a big scientist?
[32:10] The fact is, as I have stated, that if you understand Krsna, then you can teach
[32:18] even the greatest scientist, the greatest philosopher, the greatest politician-everyone.
[32:25] That is Krsna consciousness.
[32:27] You don't require to be a great scientist to teach a great scientist.
[32:32] But if you simply understand Krsna, then you'll be able to teach even the greatest scientist.
[32:45] The greatest philosopher, the greatest anyone, let them come.
[32:48] We shall teach him. We shall become their teacher.
[32:52] We challenge!
[32:55] Why? Because we know a little of Krsna.
[33:05] There is a verse in the Bhagavata, athapi te deva padambuja-dvaya-prasada-lesanugrhita eva hi, janati tattvam [SB 10.14.29].
[33:19] One devotee says, "My dear Lord, one who has got a little fragmental grace
[33:27] of Your lotus feet, he knows the Absolute Truth."
[33:33] Athapi te deva padambuja-dvayam-prasada-lesanugrhita eva hi, janati tattvam..., na canya eko 'pi ciram vicinvan.
[33:45] A devotee of Krsna, he can understand the tattva, or the truth,
[33:51] simply a little mercy, by the mercy of Krsna.
[33:55] Others, they may continue to speculate for many, many births, but they will not be able to understand.
[34:05] Therefore Bhagavad-gita, Krsna says: bahūnam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate [Bg. 7.19].
[34:13] Just like this scientist, he has surrendered. His study of science is perfect.
[34:22] When one surrenders to Krsna, perfectly knowing well that Krsna is the origin of everything,
[34:31] that is the perfection of knowledge.
[34:36] In another place, I think in this chapter, you will find:
[34:41] ataḥ pumbhir dvija-srestha varnasrama-vibhagasaḥ
[34:46] svanusthitasya dharmasya samsiddhir hari-tosanam .
[34:53] Everyone is engaged in different occupational duties, whatever he may be.
[35:00] But one should be interested to know whether, by executing this kind of duty,
[35:08] "Whether I am becoming perfect?"
[35:12] But they have no such inquiries. Neither do they know what is perfection,
[35:20] that human life is meant for achieving perfection. That is the aim of life.
[35:27] So there are so many things, but we must know that if we understand Krsna
[35:39] slightly, in truth, then our life is perfect.
[35:45] Not that... We cannot understand Krsna fully. He is so big and so unlimited.
[35:54] It is not possible. Krsna Himself does not know how great He is.
[36:03] "God is great," we say, but we do not know how great is God.
[36:09] That is intelligence. So that greatness..., you cannot understand Krsna or Krsna's greatness.
[36:21] Life after life, hearing with thousands of millions of ears, still you will not be able to understand.
[36:32] Ananta, Ananta-deva is explaining about Krsna by ananta, or unlimited, faces,
[36:44] unlimited mouths. He has got many mouths.
[36:48] Still, He could not finish. So that is not possible.
[36:53] But if you try to understand about Krsna, then Krsna will help you how to understand.
[37:03] That is stated here: srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ. Krsna is so kind.
[37:10] If anyone is interested to know about Krsna, to hear about Krsna,
[37:17] then srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ punya-sravana-kirtanaḥ.
[37:23] So Krsna, to know about Krsna, even if we do not understand Krsna,
[37:30] if you simply chant "Krsna, Krsna..." Actually we are advising, krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! he!
[37:40] krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! krsna! If you chant like that, you will become perfect.
[37:47] Immediately you become perfect.
[37:49] Yes. Srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsnaḥ punya. Krsna means... Hearing and chanting means you will become perfect.
[37:59] We are all sinful. We are all sinful, material world.
[38:05] Anyone who is living in this material world must be considered sinful.
[38:11] It is a question of degree.
[38:14] Unless we are sinful, there is no question of accepting this material body.
[38:23] Bhūtva bhūtva praliyate [Bg. 8.19].
[38:26] We are committing sinful life; therefore next life we are getting another type of body.
[38:34] Same thing is explained in Bhagavad-gita. Why different types of body?
[38:39] Why not the same body? No. Karanam guna-sahgo 'sya sad-asad-yoni-janmasu [Bg. 13.22].
[38:49] Because we are associating with certain qualities of material nature.
[38:57] There are three qualities of material nature: sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna.
[39:03] So one of them I must associate with. One of them.
[39:09] If we associate with sattva-guna, we get a different type of body.
[39:15] If we associate with rajo-guna, then we get a different type of body.
[39:20] If we associate with the tamo-guna, then we get a different type of body.
[39:26] This is the law of nature. Exactly like that.
[39:30] If you infect a certain type of disease, you take that. Nature's law. You cannot avoid it.
[39:40] If you infect typhoid disease, then you must suffer from typhoid.
[39:45] Similarly we, during this living condition, bhūtva bhūtva praliyate [Bg. 8.19],
[39:52] we are... Our position is that we are changing body after body, and we are suffering according to the body.
[40:02] If we want to stop our suffering, then we must stop getting another material body.
[40:09] This is the philosophy. And that you can do only by Krsna consciousness.
[40:17] Otherwise you will not stop it.
[40:21] Otherwise, you may be in the mode of goodness, that much.
[40:26] Here in the material world you can elevate up to the modes of goodness.
[40:34] And what is the result of goodness?
[40:38] urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha [Bg. 14.18]. If you associate with goodness,
[40:45] then you can be promoted to the very, very higher planetary system: ūrdhvam.
[40:50] There are ūrdhvam, adhaḥ and madhyam,
[40:55] the planetary systems are divided. Therefore it is called "three worlds."
[41:00] There are upper planetary systems. Just like this earth is called Bhurloka.
[41:06] It is situated in the middle.
[41:10] And above earth, there are seven lokas. And down earth, there are seven lokas.
[41:16] So in this middle position, if we associate with goodness,
[41:24] then we can be promoted to the higher planetary systems.
[41:29] Like Brahma has got..., he has got very, very long duration of life.
[41:35] The standard of living in other planets, other planetary system, is thousands, thousands times more comfortable.
[41:44] We can get up, ūrdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha, we can be promoted.
[41:50] Madhye tisthanti rajasaḥ.
[41:52] And if we associate with rajo-guna, then we can remain in the middle position.
[41:59] And if you associate with tamo-guna, then you go down.
[42:04] Just like here we see some of the animals are meant for being slaughtered.
[42:12] So in previous life, they also slaughtered. Therefore they are waiting to become..., to be slaughtered.
[42:22] Mamsaḥ. This is a Sanskrit word of..., means mam means "me"; saḥ means "he."
[42:30] "I eat you this time; you eat me next time." This is called karma-bandhana.
[42:39] Yajnarthe karma anyatra loko 'yam karma [Bg. 3.9].
[42:43] Now we are very happy that we have got so much, so many living stock,
[42:50] "I shall kill one and eat, enjoy."
[42:54] But he does not know that he is making the path smooth that he'll be also killed.
[43:02] This is karma-bandhana.
[43:05] So this is going on, bhūtva bhūtva praliyate.
[43:09] We are getting one type of body and eating or sleeping or mating according to the body.
[43:18] There are so many hundreds of thousands. So eating, meat-eating,
[43:21] sleeping, sex life and defending, everywhere this is taking place.
[43:26] Either an insect or a big man, everyone knows how to eat, how to sleep,
[43:33] how to enjoy sex life and how to defend,
[43:37] in its own way. That is not real business of human life.
[43:42] Real business of human life is here mentioned, srnvatam sva-kathaḥ krsna:
[43:50] just try to hear about Krsna.
[43:52] We are opening so many centers just to give chance to people to hear about Krsna. That's all.
[44:01] And if one hears, then..., or chants, immediately he becomes purified,
[44:07] punya-sravana-kirtanaḥ.
[44:10] And as much as..., the more you become purified, hrdy antaḥ-stho abhadrani vidhunoti:
[44:20] then all the dirty things accumulated within the heart on account of contamination of this material world,
[44:27] that becomes cleansed.
[44:30] And as soon as it is cleansed, you understand that you are eternally related with Krsna.
[44:37] He is the Supreme Master and we are servitor.
[44:41] Let us serve Krsna. That is perfection of life. Thank you very much.
