[44:23 minutes]
[00:01] [Pradyumna:] Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya.
[01:03] [Prabhupada:] Next verse.
[01:04] [Pradyumna:] Sa vai pumsam?
[01:09] [Prabhupada:] Which one we have read? Brūhi yogesvare krsne brahmanye... No.
[01:16] [Pradyumna:] Munayaḥ sadhu prsto 'ham.
[01:18] [Prabhupada:] Yes, next verse.
[01:19] [Pradyumna:] [leads chanting of verse] [Prabhupada and devotees repeat] Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje, ahaituky apratihata yayatma suprasidati .
[04:48] [Prabhupada:] That's all. Any lady? [ladies chant] [referring to microphone:] It is working? I think this verse should have this come here. Adhoksaje. Bhaktir adhoksaje. So, word meaning?
[06:06] [Pradyumna:] [leads chanting of synonyms] saḥ-that;
[06:09] vai-certainly;
[06:13] pumsam-for mankind;
[06:17] paraḥ-sublime;
[06:21] dharmaḥ-occupation;
[06:24] yataḥ-by which;
[06:27] bhaktiḥ-devotional service;
[06:31] adhoksaje-unto the Transcendence;
[06:37] ahaituki-causeless;
[06:41] apratihata-unbroken;
[06:45] yaya-by which;
[06:48] atma-self;
[06:51] suprasidati-completely satisfied.
[06:57] Translation: "The supreme occupation, or dharma, for all humanity is that by which
[07:03] men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord.
[07:07] Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted in order to completely satisfy the self."
[07:22] [Prabhupada:] So, sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje, ahaituky apratihata yayatma suprasidati.
[07:41] Everyone is seeking satisfaction, atyantiksu
[07:54] Everyone is struggling for existence for the ultimate happiness.
[08:08] But in this material world, although they are thinking by possessing material wealth
[08:18] they will be satisfied, but that is not the fact.
[08:27] For example, in your country you have got sufficient material opulence
[08:35] than other countries, but still there is no satisfaction.
[08:45] In spite of all good arrangement for material enjoyment,
[08:54] enough food, enough..., nice apartment, motorcars, roads,
[09:03] and very good arrangement for freedom in sex,
[09:10] and good arrangement of defense also-everything is complete-
[09:17] but still, people are dissatisfied, confused,
[09:24] and younger generation, they are turning to hippies, protest, or dissatisfied
[09:34] because they are not happy. I have several times cited the example that in Los Angeles,
[09:45] when I was taking my morning walk in Beverly Hills,
[09:51] many hippies were coming out from very respectable house.
[09:56] It appeared that his father, he has got a very nice car also,
[10:02] but the dress was hippie. So there is a protest against the so-called material arrangement.
[10:16] They do not like.
[10:19] Actually, we cannot be happy by material prosperity. That is a fact.
[10:31] That is also stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam.
[10:35] Prahlada Maharaja says to his atheistic father...
[10:39] His father was Hiranyakasipu.
[10:43] Hiranya means gold, and kasipu means soft bed, cushion.
[10:53] That is material civilization. They want very soft bed, and the bed companion,
[11:01] and sufficient bank balance, money. That is another meaning of Hiranyakasipu.
[11:12] So he was not happy also. Hiranyakasipu was not happy-
[11:22] at least, he was not happy that his son Prahlada was becoming a devotee of the Lord,
[11:31] which he did not like. So he inquired from his son that
[11:43] "How you are feeling? You are a small boy, child.
[11:49] How you are feeling so much comfortable, despite all my threatening?
[11:59] So what is your actual asset?" So he replied, "My dear father,"
[12:10] na te viduḥ svartha-gatim hi visnum :
[12:15] "Foolish persons, they do not know that their ultimate goal of happiness is Visnu,
[12:25] God, the Supreme Lord." Durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninaḥ.
[12:32] Durasaya, dur, hope against hope. They're hoping something
[12:41] which is never to be fulfilled. What is that?
[12:46] Durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninaḥ.
[12:50] Bahir-artha. Bahir means external; artha means interest.
[13:01] So those who do not know that the ultimate goal of happiness is Visnu,
[13:11] they think that by adjustment of this external world...
[13:16] Because we have got external and internal.
[13:21] Externally we are this body. Internally we are soul.
[13:29] Everyone can understand that "I am not this body; I am soul."
[13:35] I am covered by this body, and as soon as I go away from this body,
[13:44] the body has no meaning. It may be a very important soul's body,
[13:54] a great scientist's body, but the body is not the scientist; the soul is the scientist.
[14:06] The body is instrumental.
[14:09] Just like I want to catch something, so the hand is my instrument.
[14:17] Therefore in Sanskrit word, these different parts of the body, limbs,
[14:24] they are called karana. Karana means..., karana means action, acting,
[14:33] by which we act. Karana. So, na te viduḥ svartha-gatim hi visnum ,
[14:48] we are now illusioned under the concept of this body.
[14:53] That is also described in the Srimad-Bhagavatam,
[14:56] yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhatuke .
[15:00] Atma-buddhiḥ kunape. Kunape means bag.
[15:06] This is a bag of bones and muscles and skin and blood.
[15:11] Actually, when we dissect this body, what do we find?
[15:19] A lump of bone, skin and blood, intestines, and blood, pus-nothing else.
[15:32] So kunape tri-dhatuke. These things are manufactured by three dhatu,
[15:43] elements: kapha, pitta, vayu. Kapha, mucus; pitta, bile; and air.
[15:55] These things manufacturing. These things are going on.
[16:02] After eating, these three things are being manufactured,
[16:06] and if they are in adjustment, parallel, then body is healthy,
[16:14] and if there is more or less, then there is disease.
[16:20] Now, according to the Ayur-vedic... That is also Veda-
[16:24] ayur means span of life, and veda means knowledge.
[16:30] That is called Ayur-veda. So this Vedic knowledge of the span of life is very simple.
[16:41] They don't require pathological laboratory, clinic. No.
[16:47] They require simply to study these three elements,
[16:52] kapha, pitta, vayu. And they..., their science is to feel the pulse.
[17:00] You know, every one of you, that the pulse is moving, tick, tick, tick, tick, like this.
[17:07] So they know the science: by feeling the beating of the pulse,
[17:12] they can understand what is the position of these three elements, kapha, pitta, vayu.
[17:21] And by that position, constellation, they...
[17:26] In the Ayur-veda, sastra veda, there are, the symptoms, if the...,
[17:32] these veins are moving like this, heart is moving like this, beating like this,
[17:38] then the position is this. As soon as they understand the position is this,
[17:45] they verify the symptoms. They enquire from the patient, "Do you feel like this?
[17:50] Do you feel like this?" If he says, "Yes," then it is confirmed.
[17:56] The inner things, how the pulse is beating, and the symptoms are confirmed,
[18:05] then the medicine is ready. Immediately take the medicine.
[18:10] Very simple.
[18:12] And formerly every brahmana used to learn these two sciences,
[18:20] Ayur-veda and Jyotir-veda. Jyotir-veda means astronomy...,
[18:28] astrology, not astronomy. Because any other-means the less intelligent than brahmanas:
[18:41] the ksatriyas, the vaisyas, the sūdras-they would need the brahmanas for health and future.
[18:50] Everyone is very inquisitive to learn what is future, what is going to happen next,
[18:58] and everyone is concerned with the health.
[19:04] So brahmanas, they would simply advise about health and the future.
[19:11] So that is their profession, and people give them eatables,
[19:16] cloth, so they have nothing to do for working outside.
[19:22] Anyway, this is a long story.
[19:25] So this body is a bag of the three elements,
[19:31] yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhatuke. [baby crying]
[19:43] [Devotee:] The baby should be taken out. Please take the baby out.
[19:49] [Prabhupada:] Take baby out.
[19:54] So Bhagavata says, yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhatuke.
[20:00] I am not this body. This is a vehicle. Just like we ride on a car,
[20:08] drive car, so I am not this car. Similarly, this is a yantra, car,
[20:17] mechanical car. Krsna, or God, has given me this car. I wanted it.
[20:26] That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita,
[20:29] isvaraḥ sarva-bhūtanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]:
[20:36] "My dear Arjuna, the Lord as Paramatma is sitting in everyone's heart,"
[20:44] bhramayan sarva-bhūtani yantrarūḍhani mayaya,
[20:51] "and He is giving chance to the living entity to travel, to wander,"
[20:59] sarva-bhūtani, "all over the universe," yantrarūḍhani mayaya,
[21:06] "riding on a car, driving a car, given by the material nature."
[21:15] So actual our position is that I am soul, I have been given a nice car...
[21:25] It is not a nice car, but as soon as we get a car, however rotten it may be,
[21:31] we think that it is very nice [laughter], and identify with that car,
[21:39] "I have got this car," "I have got that car."
[21:44] One forgets. If one drives a very costly car, he forgets himself that he is a poor man.
[21:54] He thinks that "I am this car." This is identification.
[22:00] So, yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhatuke
[22:03] sva-dhiḥ kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhiḥ .
[22:07] One who thinks this body as himself, as self, and bodily relation, sva-dhiḥ,
[22:19] "They are my own-my brother, my family, my nation, my community, my society,"
[22:29] so many things "my," "I and mine," misconception of "I"
[22:35] as this body, and misconception of "my" in relationship with body.
[22:41] Yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhatuke
[22:44] sva-dhiḥ kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhiḥ.
[22:49] Bhauma ijya-dhiḥ. Bhūmi, bhūmi means land; ijya-dhiḥ, ijya means worshipable.
[23:00] So at the present moment it is very strong, the conceit that "I am this body."
[23:07] "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am European,"
[23:11] "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am brahmana," "I am ksatriya,"
[23:16] "I am sūdra," "I am this, those...," so many.
[23:20] This is very strong. And bhauma ijya-dhiḥ, that because
[23:27] I am identifying to a certain type of body, and wherefrom the body has come out,
[23:34] the land is worshipable. That is nationalism. So yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape
[23:44] sva-dhiḥ kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhiḥ,
[23:47] yat-tirtha-buddhiḥ salile, and tirtha, place of pilgrimage.
[23:56] We go, we take bath in the river, like the Christians,
[24:00] they take bath in the Jordan River, or Hindus,
[24:04] they go to Haridwar, take bath in the Ganges, or Vrndavana
[24:09] they take bath. But they think by taking bath in that water, his job is finished.
[24:17] No. Actually, the job is to go to such pilgrimages, holy places,
[24:25] to find out experienced, spiritually advanced men.
[24:33] Because many spiritually advanced men, they live there.
[24:37] Therefore one should go such places and find out the experienced transcendentalist
[24:45] and take lessons from him. That is really going to pilgrimage.
[24:50] Not that simply going and take bath and business finished. No. So:
[24:59] yasyatma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhatuke sva-dhiḥ kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhiḥ, yat-tirtha-buddhiḥ salile na karhicij janesv abhijnesu...
[25:11] Abhijne, one who knows. We should approach person who knows things very well,
[25:21] abhijnaḥ. Krsna is abhijnaḥ, svarat. So similarly, Krsna's representative is also abhijnaḥ,
[25:30] naturally. If one associates with Krsna, if one talks with Krsna, he must be very abhijnaḥ,
[25:38] very learned, because he takes lessons from Krsna.
[25:44] Therefore Krsna's knowledge is perfect, therefore, because he takes knowledge from Krsna,
[25:52] his knowledge is also perfect. Abhijnaḥ. And Krsna talks.
[25:59] It is not that it is fictitious. No. Krsna-I have already said-
[26:05] that Krsna is sitting in everyone's heart, and He talks with the bona fide person.
[26:14] Just like a big man, he talks with some bona fide person.
[26:19] He doesn't waste his time talking with nonsense. He talks, that's a fact, but he does not talk
[26:27] with nonsense; he talks with the bona fide representative.
[26:33] How it is known? It is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, tesam satata-yuktanam [Bg. 10.10],
[26:40] who is bona fide representative. Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-pūrvakam,
[26:47] buddhi-yogam dadami tam. Krsna says that "I give him intelligence."
[26:56] To whom? Satata-yuktanam, those who are engaged twenty-four hours.
[27:04] In which way he is engaged? Bhajatam, bhajana, those who are engaged in devotional service.
[27:15] What kind of devotional service? Priti-pūrvakam: with love and affection.
[27:22] One who is engaged in devotional service of the Lord in love and devotion.
[27:30] What is the symptom of love? The symptom, the prime symptom,
[27:38] most important symptom of love is that the devotee wants to see that his Lord's name,
[27:45] fame, etc., become widespread. He wants to see that "My Lord's name be known everywhere."
[27:59] This is love. If I love somebody, I want to see that his glories are spread all over the world.
[28:10] And Krsna also says in the Bhagavad-gita, na ca tasmat manusyesu kascit me priya-krttamaḥ:
[28:19] anyone who preaches His glories, nobody is dearer to Him than that person.
[28:28] Everything is there in the Bhagavad-gita: how you can love,
[28:33] what are the symptoms of love, how you can please God,
[28:37] how He can talk with you. Everything is there. But you have to take advantage.
[28:46] We read Bhagavad-gita, but by reading Bhagavad-gita I become a politician.
[28:54] So what kind of reading Bhagavad-gita? Politician is there, of course,
[29:01] but the real purpose of reading Bhagavad-gita is to know Krsna.
[29:09] If one is Krsna..., if one knows Krsna, he knows everything.
[29:14] He knows politics, he knows economics, he knows science,
[29:17] he knows philosophy, he knows religion, he knows sociology-everything.
[29:24] Tasmin vijnate sarvam etam vijnatam bhavanti [Munḍaka Upanisad 1.3],
[29:27] that is the Vedic injunction. If you simply understand God, Krsna,
[29:33] then everything will be revealed to you because Krsna says,
[29:38] buddhi-yogam dadami tam. If Krsna gives you intelligence from within,
[29:43] who can excel him? Nobody can excel. But Krsna can give you intelligence,
[29:52] provided you become a devotee, or lover of Krsna.
[29:57] Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-pūrvakam,
[30:02] buddhi-yogam dadami tam.
[30:04 And what is that buddhi-yoga? What is the value of buddhi-yoga?
[30:07] That buddhi-yoga, or bhakti-yoga, the value is yena mam upayanti te.
[30:16] Such buddhi-yoga, such intelligence, will get him back to home, back to Godhead.
[30:24] Not that by such intelligence he will go down to hell. That is material intelligence.
[30:34] Adanta-gobhir visatam tamisram . Everything is discussed in Bhagavatam.
[30:41] For the materialist person, adanta-gobhi. Adanta means unbridled, uncontrolled.
[30:50] Go means indriya, or senses. Materialistic persons, they cannot control their senses.
[31:00] They are servant of the senses, godasa. Go means indriya, and dasa means servant.
[31:08] So when you come to the position of controlling the senses, then you'll be gosvami.
[31:18] That is gosvami. Gosvami means controlling the senses, who has completely controlled
[31:24] the senses. Svami or gosvami. Svami also means that, and gosvami also means the same thing.
[31:34] Generally, adanta-gobhir visatam tamisram. Uncontrolled senses, they are going.
[31:44] It is not that Krsna is sending them. He is making his own path clear, either back to home,
[31:54] back to Godhead, or glide down to the darkest region of hell. Two things are there,
[32:04] and that opportunity is in the human form of life. You can select. Krsna,
[32:13] as He inquired from Arjuna, "Whether your illusion has been dissipated now,
[32:23] after..." [break]
