Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.1.1
[00:19] [Prabhupada:] om namo bhagavate vasudevaya, janmady asya yato 'nvayad itaratas carthesv abhijnaḥ svarat
[00:31] tene brahma hrda ya adi-kavaye muhyanti yat sūrayaḥ,
[00:40] tejo-vari-mrdam yatha vinimayo yatra tri-sargo 'mrsa
[00:48] dhamna svena sada nirasta-kuhakam satyam param dhimahi .
[00:57] This is a prayer offered by Srila Vyasadeva before writing Srimad-Bhagavatam.
[01:10] He offers his respectful obeisances to Bhagavate Vasudeva.
[01:20] Bhagavate means the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is known as Vasudeva.
[01:32] He appeared... Lord Krsna appeared as the son of Vasudeva. Therefore He's called Vasudeva.
[01:46] Another meaning is that He is all-pervading. Everywhere He is present.
[01:58] So Vasudeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the origin of everything: janmady asya yataḥ.
[02:11] Janma means creation. Creation of this material world, cosmic manifestation, is from Vasudeva.
[02:27] Janma-adi means creation, maintenance and annihilation.
[02:37] Anything in this material world has three features:
[02:43] it is created at a certain date; it exists for a certain number of years; and then it is dissolved, annihilated.
[02:59] That is called janmady asya-janma-sthiti yaḥ.
[03:06] So everything is taking place from the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
[03:14] The cosmic manifestation is also emanating from Him. It is existing on His energy, external energy,
[03:28] or it is being maintained by His external energy. And as everything material dissolves ultimately, or annihilates,
[03:41] so after annihilation the power merges into Him.
[03:52] The power, the energy, is extended from Him and maintained by His energy,
[04:02] and again when it is dissolved, it merges into Him.
[04:08] This is the way of creation, maintenance and dissolution.
[04:20] Now, the question is that the supreme power, or the supreme source,
[04:28] what is the nature of that supreme source? Is it matter or living force?
[04:41] The Bhagavata says, "No, it cannot be matter." From matter nothing is created automatically.
[04:53] We have no such experience.
[04:58] Unless there is some living force behind the matter, there cannot be anything creation.
[05:08] We have no such experience. Just like anything material, suppose the motorcar,
[05:18] it has got all the machine equipped, subtle machines,
[05:27] but still the motorcar cannot move automatically. There must be a driver,
[05:37] and the driver is a living force. Therefore, the original source of everything must be a living force.
[05:49] This is the conclusion of Bhagavatam.
[05:52] And what kind of living force? That means He knows everything. Just like an expert motor mechanic,
[06:07] he knows everything; therefore, he can detect, when the motorcar stalls,
[06:14] he can immediately detect how the motorcar has stopped.
[06:21] So he tightens one screw or does something so that it is again in motion.
[06:33] Therefore in Bhagavatam it says that the original source of all emanation knows everything,
[06:42] 'nvayad itaratas carthesv,
[06:47] directly and indirectly. He's so expert.
[06:55] Just like I am the creator of this body. I am a living soul.
[07:07] As I desired, I have created this body
[07:12] by energy, by my energy. According to my desire, I have produced this body.
[07:21] But although I am claiming "my body," I do not know how the body is working.
[07:30] That is unknown to me.
[07:34] I cut my hair, but I do not know how the hair grows again.
[07:41] I cut my nails, but I do not know how the..., what is the function going on inside so that
[07:52] even after cutting the nails and hairs, again it grows.
[07:57] Neither I do know... I'm eating. I know because I'm eating something substantial,
[08:06] it is transforming into different types of secretion within my abdomen,
[08:14] and the secretion is distributed.
[08:20] I have known it from some medical practitioner or medical science. But so far I am concerned,
[08:29] I do not know how my foodstuff is transformed into blood,
[08:38] how the blood is transmitted in different parts of my body, and then I get again energy.
[08:49] Actually I do not know. But the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He knows,
[08:59] indirectly and directly, both, how this material cosmic manifestation is working.
[09:07] He knows everything: How the sun is rising. How the moon is rising.
[09:16] How the oceans are steady; it is not trespassing on the land.
[09:25] Such a big ocean, it can overflood immediately any city or any land within a second.
[09:38] But it is not doing that. So the direction is there.
[09:44] Therefore Bhagavatam says that the original source of everything is sentient, conscious,
[09:56] and consciously is controlling everything,
[10:01] 'nvayad itaratas carthesv abhijnaḥ. Abhijnaḥ means "completely cognizant."
[10:11] The next question may be raised that wherefrom He got the knowledge? He's the origin.
[10:20] Because we have got this idea that any living being, he gets knowledge from other,
[10:33] just like we have got our knowledge from our spiritual master;
[10:38] my disciples are getting knowledge from me. So their knowledge is also given by somebody.
[10:50] It has got a source. But if the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the origin,
[10:59] how He got this knowledge of creation, maintenance?
[11:04] The answer is svarat. He did not get knowledge from anyone.
[11:13] He is self-sufficient, Himself, in knowledge. That is the nature of God.
[11:21] He does not require to get knowledge from anyone superior, because nobody can be superior than God,
[11:33] neither equal to God. Asamordhva. Nobody is equal to Him; nobody is greater than Him.
[11:45] Now, we have got experience that the first creature, living creature, within this universe is Lord Brahma.
[11:58] So he also got knowledge without any help of others, because he is the first living creature.
[12:11] So there was no other living creature, so how he got knowledge?
[12:15] So does it mean this original source is Lord Brahma?
[12:22] People may question. But Bhagavata says no. He's the original teacher of this universe-
[12:31] that's all right-but he's also a created being,
[12:37] because the cosmic manifestation was created by God, the Supreme,
[12:50] and after this creation, Brahma was created. Therefore he's a created being,
[12:59] after the cosmic manifestation.
[13:02] And because God, or the Supreme Lord, He's the creator,
[13:11] so He's not one of the created beings. He creates, but He is not created.
[13:18] But Brahma is created. Therefore he gets knowledge from the Supreme Creator, who is independent.
[13:32] Now, the process is just like we approach a teacher, a spiritual master, to get knowledge.
[13:41] So there was no visible living creature before Brahma. So how he got knowledge?
[13:52] The answer is tene brahma hrda adi-kavaye. Adi-kavaye.
[13:59] The first created living being, Brahma, was educated from within the heart.
[14:10] That means Krsna, Vasudeva, or the Supreme Lord, is situated in everyone's heart.
[14:22] He is situated in Brahma's heart also. He is situated in your heart, my heart.
[14:28] And hrda, this very word is used. Hrda means heart. So He can educate anyone from within the heart.
[14:45] But why we are not aware of Him? Theoretically we know,
[14:53] but practically, in our conditioned state, we cannot understand how He is directing us.
[15:00] But He's directing us. That's a fact. Brahma is not ordinary living being;
[15:11] therefore he could take direction from the Supreme Lord within the heart.
[15:19] We can also take, when we are qualified, exactly like Brahma.
[15:28] Brahma appeared to serve the Lord, to fulfill the desire of the Lord.
[15:38] Just like we engage one carpenter, and I ask him to make a cabinet for me.
[15:48] I give him the ingredients, tools or wages, and he creates a cabinet.
[15:57] Similarly, God created the ingredients and the manufacturer also, and Brahma created this universe.
[16:16] But he's not the original creator. The original creator is Krsna.
[16:23] As such, the original proprietor is also Krsna, because He has created the ingredients.
[16:32] Actually, when we work in practical field, the ingredients we cannot create.
[16:47] Suppose we construct a very high skyscraper building. But the ingredients, namely the earth,
[16:57] stone, wood, iron, which are the ingredients of the house, that we cannot create.
[17:07] That is created by God. We simply transform.
[17:12] We take earth, dirt from the earth, and mix it with water. The water is created by God.
[17:22] The earth is created by God. Then we mix it and make a lumplike brick and put it in the fire.
[17:34] The fire is also created by God.
[17:37] In this way, if we study scrutinizingly the ingredients and the materials which we are handling,
[17:47] they are not our creation; they are creation of God.
[17:54] We simply handle them. But because we handle them, it does not become our property.
[18:04] This is sense. Suppose I am worker, I'm handling some other things, materials, and preparing something.
[18:17] So that does not mean when the thing is manufactured, complete, it become my property.
[18:24] No. How it can be? Therefore, the philosophy is that everything belongs to Krsna, God.
[18:35] I also belong to Him. And whatever I do, manufacture, that also belongs to Him.
[18:44] This sense: to understand that everything belongs to God; I also belong to God,
[18:52] my intelligence also belong to God, the ingredients, or physical elements with which I work,
[19:01] that also belongs to God. Then where is the scope for my claiming that I am proprietor?
[19:11] This is called illusion.
[19:15] So this Krsna consciousness movement is meant for reviving the original consciousness of the
[19:27] human society, because in the cats and dogs or animals, such consciousness cannot be invoked.
[19:42] They are so dull. And in the lower stage of consciousness, it is not possible for them to understand.
