Morning Walk, October 3, 1975
[00:24] [Prabhupada:] Exactly like this, now also. [laughter]
[00:28] So I was given medicine by force in the spoon.
[00:33] Two men will catch me, and my mother would take me on the lap
[00:39] and then force me, and then I shall take.
[00:41] I never agreed to take any medicine.
[00:44] [Harikesa:] Should we do that now, Srila Prabhupada?
[00:48] [Prabhupada:] Then you'll kill me.
Srimad-Bhagavatam Lecture, October 5, 1975
[00:56] [Prabhupada:] "...Beyond that, there is another, superior energy."
[01:00] What is that superior energy?
[01:02] Jiva-bhūtaḥ maha-baho yayedam dharyate jagat [Bg. 7.5]:
[01:07] "That is that living being." We are all living being.
[01:14] So we are superior energy. We are exploiting the material resources;
[01:21] therefore we are superior. We are molding the material energy to our satisfaction,
[01:30] so we belong to the superior energy.
[01:36] So at the present moment we are engaged in the activities of material energy.
[01:44] Just like we are economist, nationalist, scientist, and so on, so on.
[01:54] That means all our engagements are within this material energy,
[02:00] even psychologists, mental speculators, philosopher-all material energy.
[02:13] But that is not our superior engagement.
[02:19] The superior engagement is explained here,
[02:23] sa vai pumsam paro dharmo .
[02:26] Superior engage means to remain engaged in devotional service of the Supreme Lord.
[02:35] Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje.
[02:41] Bhakti. Bhakti means devotional service.
[02:44] When we understand the Adhoksaja, the Supreme, the Absolute Truth,
[02:53] then we understand our position. [break]
[02:58] "...they are part and parcel of Me." Mamaiva amsa.
[03:03] Amsa means part and parcel. Just like this finger is the
[03:10] part and parcel of my body, so the finger's business is to carry out
[03:18] or to see the comforts of the body. I want to itch my nostril;
[03:25] immediately the finger is engaged.
[03:29] And if the finger cannot help me, then it is diseased.
[03:36] Similarly, we are part and parcel of God. If we cannot help God...
Initiations, October 1975
[09:21] [Bhakta:] [recites four regulations]
[09:29] [Brahmananda:] Danḍa dasa.
[09:31] [Prabhupada:] So your spiritual name is Danḍa dasa.
[09:49] [Bhakta 2:] [recites four regulations]
[09:52] [Prabhupada:] Sarvajit?
[09:53] [Brahmananda:] Sarvajit.
[09:55] [Prabhupada:] Sarvajit. Then?
[10:04] [Brahmananda:] Raju? [break] Follower of Sanatana Gosvami.
[10:15] [Prabhupada:] [indistinct] [break]
Arrival Address, October 1, 1975
[10:22] [Prabhupada:] ...God is also eternal. We are living being;
[10:26] God is also a living being. But He is the chief living being;
[10:34] He is the chief eternal. We are also eternal, but we are not chief.
[10:43] Why? Eko yo bahūnam vidadhati kaman. Just like we require a leader,
[10:52] similarly, He is the supreme leader. He is maintainer.
[10:59] He is Providence. He is providing everyone's necessities.
[11:06] We can see that there are elephants in Africa.
[11:12] Who is providing them food?
[11:15] There are millions of ants within the hole of your room.
[11:21] Who is feeding them? [break]
[11:25] He is already supplying the necessities, but then why shall I bother Him
[11:34] for supplying the necessities? He is already supplying, without asking.
[11:40] The ants and the elephants, they do not go to the church for asking God,
[11:45] "Oh, give us our daily bread," but still, they are getting. [break]
[11:54] We require these things, and God has created.
[11:58] He has given us enough. Pūrnam idam pūrnam adaḥ pūrnat pūrnam udacyate .
[12:05] Everything is complete. Īsavasyam idam sarvam .
[12:13] Everything is completely arranged by the Supreme Lord. Tena tyaktena bhunjitha.
[12:23] So we should be cognizant how we are benefited by the Supreme Personality of Godhead
[12:34] and what is our duty. [break]
[12:37] ...perfect. He doesn't require our service, but if we are engaged in His service,
[12:46] that is our healthy condition. Just like this finger is
[12:53] part and parcel of my body. Now I am asking this finger,
[13:01] "Keep like this. Move like this." This is healthy condition of the finger.
[13:08] But if I want to take service from the finger in some way but
[13:15] if the finger cannot serve me, this means unhealthy condition.
[13:22] Similarly, when we do not serve God, that is our unhealthy condition.
[13:31] That is material condition. Therefore
[13:38] there was a big meeting in Naimisaranya. [break]
Room Conversation, October 1975
[13:43] [Pusta Krsna:] [reading] " '...But my opinion is that where Krsna and Arjuna are present,
[13:46] there will be all good fortune.'
[13:48] He directly confirmed that Dhrtarastra could not expect victory for his side.
[13:54] Victory was certain for the side of Arjuna because Krsna was there.
[13:59] Krsna's acceptance of the post of charioteer for Arjuna
[14:03] was an exhibition of another opulence.
[14:06] Krsna is full of all opulences, and renunciation is one of them.
[14:11] There are many instances of such renunciation,
[14:14] for Krsna is the master of renunciation.
[14:17] The fight was actually between Duryodhana and Yudhisthira.
[14:23] Arjuna was fighting on behalf of his elder brother, Yudhisthira.
[14:27] Because Krsna and Arjuna were on the side of Yudhisthira,
[14:31] Yudhisthira's victory was certain.
[14:34] The battle was to decide who would rule the world,
[14:39] and Sanjaya predicted that the power would be transferred to Yudhisthira.
[14:44] It is also predicted here that Yudhisthira, after gaining victory in this battle,
[14:50] would flourish more and more because he was not only righteous and pious,
[14:54] but he was a strict moralist. He never spoke a lie during his life.
[15:00] There are many less intelligent persons who take Bhagavad-gita to be a
[15:04] discussion of topics between two friends in a battlefield.
[15:08] But such a book cannot be scripture.
[15:11] Some may protest that Krsna incited Arjuna to fight, which is immoral.
[15:17] But the reality of the situation is clearly stated:
[15:21] Bhagavad-gita is the supreme instruction in morality.
[15:24] The supreme instruction of morality is stated in the Ninth Chapter,
[15:29] in the thirty-fourth verse: man-mana bhava mad-bhaktaḥ.
[15:34] One must become a devotee of Krsna, and the essence of all religion
[15:39] is to surrender unto Krsna, as stated, sarva-dharman.
[15:45] The instructions of Bhagavad-gita constitute the supreme process of religion and of morality.
[15:52] All other processes may be purifying and may lead to this process,
[15:57] but the last instruction of the Gita is the last word in all morality
[16:01] and religion: 'Surrender unto Krsna.'
[16:05] This is the verdict of the Eighteenth Chapter.
[16:08] From the Bhagavad-gita we can understand that to realize oneself by
[16:13] philosophical speculation and by meditation is one process,
[16:18] but to fully surrender unto Krsna is the highest platform..., is the higherst perfection.
[16:25] This is the essence of the teachings of Bhagavad-gita.
[16:29] The path of regulative principles according to the orders of social life
[16:34] and according to the different courses of religion may be a confidential
[16:38] path of knowledge in as far as the rituals of religion are confidential,
[16:42] but one is still involved with meditation and cultivation of knowledge.
[16:48] Surrender unto Krsna in devotional service in full Krsna consciousness
[16:52] is the most confidential instruction and is the essence of the Eighteenth Chapter."
Srimad-Bhagavatam Lecture, October 2, 1975
[17:27] [Prabhupada:] ...So I see in your this Mauritius land, you have got enough land to produce food grains.
[17:39] So you produce food grain. I understand that instead of growing food grain,
[17:47] you are growing sugarcane for exporting. Why?
[17:56] And you are dependent on food grains, on rice, wheat, ḍal. Why?
[18:04] Why this attempt? You first of all grow your own eatable.
[18:13] And if there is time, and if your population has got sufficient food grain,
[18:22] then you can try to grow other fruits and vegetables for exporting.
[18:34] The first necessity is that you should be self-sufficient.
[18:38] That is God's arrangement.
[18:41] Everywhere there is sufficient land to produce food grains,
[18:48] not only in your country. I have traveled all over the world-
[18:54] Africa, Australia and other, in America also-
[19:01] there are so much land vacant that if we produce food grain, then
[19:08] we can feed ten times as much population as at the present moment.
[19:15] There is no question of scarcity. [break]
[19:21] Now, suppose we have got this human form of life. Now, by our pious
[19:28] activities we may be elevated to the higher planetary system, Svargaloka, heavenly planet.
[19:40] But what we shall gain there? The same sense gratification, in higher standard,
[19:47] that's all. Just like sense gratification is there in the society of the cats and dogs;
[19:59] sense gratification is there in one country, in another country;
[20:07] but the arrangement is, may be little different... [break]
Arrival Reception, October 1, 1975
[22:07] [Indian Official:] We are very pleased to have you among us,
[22:11] and we welcome you on behalf of the people of Mauritius to this island,
[22:16] and we hope you will enjoy your short stay here.
[22:20] And Swamiji, how long are you going to stay here?
[22:24] [Prabhupada:] The program is one week.
[22:27] [Indian Official:] One week. Have you got any special programs? You are going for lectures or…?
[22:33] [Prabhupada:] I do not know what they have arranged. But my secretary says that it will be one week.
[22:42] [Indian Official:] Have you had any idea of Mauritius before you came here? You knew anything about...
[22:47] [Prabhupada:] My idea is to preach Krsna consciousness, because for want of this knowledge
[22:56] our mission of human life is failing all over the world.
[23:04] Therefore, I am trying to introduce this Krsna consciousness all over the world,
[23:13] without any distinction of caste, creed, color.
[23:18] God is for everyone. And we have forgotten our relationship with God;
[23:25] therefore, we are suffering in so many ways.
[23:30] And His instruction is there in the Bhagavad-gita. If we follow, then we become happy.
Morning Walk, October 3, 1975
[23:39] [Prabhupada:] ...and they have progressed how to die quickly.
[23:44] This is the progress. At any moment he can die. As soon as he is on the car,
[23:49] seventy miles' speed, that means taking the risk of dying at any moment.
[23:55] This is the progress. [break]
[24:07] ...from one village to another. That was primitive. Now we can go hundred miles
[24:14] away from home for earning money and taking risk to die at any moment.
[24:21] That is progress. Is it not?
[24:26] [Brahmananda:] Oh, yes.
[24:35] [Prabhupada:] Formerly they were satisfied by tilling the ground, getting food grains.
[24:42] Now they have started factories. At the cost of thousands of men's labor,
[24:50] some director is getting money and enjoying life. That is progress.
[25:02] And these rascals, laborers, they are thinking that "These men are getting the profit,
[25:10] cream of this business. We are working. Why not take ourselves?" That is Communism. [break]
[25:22] And by taking, when he is cured he will find, "Oh, it is very sweet."
[25:30] [Pusta Krsna:] So then he has to recognize that there is some problem living in this material world.
[25:35] [Prabhupada:] No. He does not find any happiness, on account of his too much materialistic mind.
[25:43] [Brahmananda:] That is the disease.
[25:44] [Prabhupada:] That is the disease. So it has to be cured by this bhakti-yoga.
[25:51] So in the bhakti-yoga, in the beginning, it will taste bitter.
[25:56] Therefore [indistinct]. But if they take to bhakti-yoga, then the material disease
[26:02] will be cured, and they will find it is very sweet.
[26:07] [Pusta Krsna:] Yes. So the more... [break]
Press Conference, October 2, 1975
[27:02] [Prabhupada:] ...protection from being hurt, ksat. Ksat means hurting.
[27:08] So suppose if I unnecessarily hurt you, then it is the duty of the government
[27:15] to give you protection. So unless I am also punished by violence, I cannot...,
[27:25] he cannot give you protection. So this is also necessary.
[27:31] Therefore in the society there must be ksatriya.
[27:34] The brahmanas should be learned; they should give instruction, advice.
[27:39] The ksatriyas should give protection; the vaisyas should produce, economic development;
[27:45] and rest, they should assist-sūdras. That's all. This... [break]
[27:53] [Brahmananda:] [explaining question] ...comes from many lamps.
[27:55] [Interviewer:] But your preaching consists only from the Gita.
[28:01] [Prabhupada:] Yes. That is the supreme light. There are degrees of light.
[28:06] There is sunlight, and there is this light. You cannot compare this light with the sun. [laughter]
[28:14] Light comes from everywhere, but that does not mean the sunlight and this light is the same.
[28:19] [Interviewer:] No, what I...
[28:20] [Prabhupada:] First of all you understand this. Your question was the light.
[28:24] First of all you understand there are degrees of light.
[28:27] You cannot say this light and the sunlight is the same.
[28:32] [Interviewer:] By this, you mean that those who adopt the light by the teachings coming from the Koran or from the Bible is lesser light than from the Gita?
[28:44] [Prabhupada:] That is your business. That is your business to study.
[28:47] But we give you the idea that light comes from everywhere.
[28:53] There is one glowworm. That light also light, and the sunlight is also light.
[28:58] You cannot think that the glowworm's light and the sunlight is the same.
[29:05] Now it is your business to see which is glowworm light and which is sunlight.
[29:10] That is your business. [break]
[29:14] [Brahmananda:] ...has been connected with certain imperialistic countries.
[29:20] [Prabhupada:] Let them say all nonsense. What can I say?
[29:24] Every nonsense will speak something nonsense. How can I check it?
[29:32] There are so many nonsenses; therefore we are trying to
[29:35] make all these nonsense into human beings. That is our program.
[29:40] So long he is a nonsense, he will go on speaking nonsense. What can I do?
[29:46] [Interviewer:] Swamiji, one thing I want to know. This sloka, from where you have got it, this sloka, lavanyam kesa-dharanam? This sloka, lavanyam kesa-dharanam.
[29:54] [Prabhupada:] Yes. It is in the Third Chapter of Twelfth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam.
[30:02] [aside:] Have you got all the Bhagavatas? Twelfth Canto?
[30:07] [Pusta Krsna:] We don't have it with us.
[30:09] [Prabhupada:] So you can note it. There are many things, that, that dampatye ratim eva hi. [break]
Arrival Address, October 1, 1975
[30:20] [Prabhupada:] Simply one can understand what is the difference between the dead body and the living body.
[30:30] Living body means there is the soul, and dead body means there is no more soul. [break]
[30:45] ...janati tattvataḥ, tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9].
[30:52] The solution is there. You try to understand Krsna,
[30:56] then you will have not to accept any more material body. Simple thing.
Press Conference, October 2, 1975
[31:30] [Prabhupada:] He is greater than the greatest, smaller than the smallest.
[31:49] Īsvaraḥ sarva-bhūtanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati.
[31:54] You'll find at night a small insect,
[32:04] he has got all the framework within [indistinct]. There is also.
[32:23] Anḍantarastham paramanu-cayantarastham.
[32:26] Krsna is within the atom. That is Krsna. [break]
[32:52] Knowledge, philosophy, logic. You want to study Krsna? There are so many books,
[33:08] you cannot finish even within your life. We have got already published sixty books. [break]
[33:21] Brahman and Parabrahman. Krsna is Parabrahman. You study Brahman.
[33:32] We are all Brahman, but Krsna is Parabrahman.
[33:42] [Indian man:] Do you think, Swamiji, that man can become perfect?
[33:45] [Prabhupada:] Oh, yes. That is the chance of a human being.
[33:49] Therefore in the human society there is school, college, education, culture,
[33:54] not in the animal society. Because they can be made into perfect, not the animals.
[34:08] So if they are denied proper education, that is the greatest harm.
[34:14] They got the opportunity, and the authorities are not giving them the opportunity.
[34:21] [Indian man:] No, but does it mean the perfectness is to become the God or to become the man? Then I want...
[34:31] [Prabhupada:] You cannot become God.
[34:32] [Indian man:] But what does perfectness mean?
[34:35] [Prabhupada:] Perfect means to become godly.
[34:48] [Interviewer:] Can you be interested directly in politics?
[34:54] [Prabhupada:] Why not? Krsna... Krsna was in politics. So He instructed Arjuna to fight.
[35:03] This is politics-for the good cause... [break]
[35:15] [Pusta Krsna:] [reading] ...asvargyam akirti-karam arjuna [Bg. 2.2].
[35:18] "The Supreme Person, Bhagavan, said: My dear Arjuna, how have these impurities come upon you?
[35:25] They are not at all befitting a man who knows the progressive values of life.
[35:30] They do not lead to higher planets, but to infamy."
[35:35] [Prabhupada:] And purport?
[35:36] [Pusta Krsna:] Purport: "Krsna and the Supreme Personality of Godhead are identical.
[35:42] Therefore Lord Krsna is referred to as Bhagavan throughout the Gita.
[35:47] Bhagavan is the ultimate in the Absolute Truth.
[35:50] Absolute Truth is realized in three phases of understanding, namely Brahman,
[35:57] or the impersonal, all-pervasive spirit; Paramatma, or the localized aspect
[36:03] of the Supreme within the heart of all living entities; and Bhagavan,
[36:08] or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krsna.
[36:12] In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, this conception of the Absolute Truth is explained thus:
[36:18 vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvam yaj jnanam advayam, brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate .
[36:27] 'The Absolute Truth is realized in three phases of understanding by the knower
[36:32] of the Absolute Truth, and all of them are identical.
[36:38] Such phases of the Absolute Truth are expressed as Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan' [Srimad-Bhagavatam, First Canto, Second Chapter, eleventh verse].
[36:48] These three divine aspects can be explained by the example of the sun,
[36:52] which also has three different aspects..." [break]
[36:56] [Prabhupada:] Because the body is born in America; therefore he is thinking "American."
[37:05] The body is born in India; therefore he is thinking "Indian."
[37:11] The body is born in Hindu family; therefore he is thinking "Hindu."
[37:18] So this is the real... [break]
[37:22] There cannot be any standard civilization. So this Krsna consciousness movement means
[37:31] we are trying to eradicate this conception of life, bodily conception of life.
[37:42] The animals..., an animal, he is also thinking, "I am dog," "I am cat," "I am cow," "I am ass,"
[37:57] on account of this bodily concept of life.
[38:02] And if we, human being, we also remain in that bodily concept of life,
[38:10] then we are no better than the animals. [break]
[38:17] ...we also defend. So if we remain engaged only on the principles of four demands of body,
[38:28] then we remain animal. Our extra education required, that "I am not this body;
[38:39] I am spirit soul. And there is necessity of the soul."
[38:46] If you don't come to this platform, then we remain animal. [break]
[38:54] [Interviewer:] ...striving for peace in the world? Is it one of your goals?
[38:59] [Prabhupada:] Yes. Everyone is trying for peace in the world.
[39:03] I have already referred to the United Nation organization. They are also trying
[39:09] peace of the world. But one must know the right way how to bring peace in the world. [break]
[39:29] [Interviewer:] ...this movement has a great faith in Bhagavad-gita, and Gita is the [indistinct] of the war. How do you explain it?
[39:36] [Prabhupada:] The war is also necessary. When there are demons, they should be punished.
[39:44] But we must know who is demon and who is not demon.
[39:53] Just like any good state, just like our Indian state,
[39:59] accepting that we attained our independence by Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent movement,
[40:12] but do you think that India is keeping nonviolent? [break]
[40:17] [Brahmananda:] ...prayacchati, that "One can offer to Me with love and devotion a flower, leaf."
[40:23] In this way he mentions vegetarian items. He never says "Offer Me meat."
[40:31] So a bhakta, or a devotee, he eats prasadam, which means the remnants of the offering to Krsna.
[40:41] So he offers Krsna very nice things of halava and rasagulla and sandesa
[40:49] and puri, and so many...., kachoris, so many..., samosas, so many nice things.
[41:00] Neither do we find the necessity to slaughter the animal and eat the flesh.
[41:07] We don't find need for that, although we have been ourselves brought up in such a culture,
[41:14] we find after taking to this process that we lose our taste for these things.
[41:20] We no longer require; in fact we even shun it.
[41:24] If someone should offer something with meat we will reject it immediately.
[41:30] [Prabhupada:] We do not take any meals in the aeroplane.
[41:33] We take our meals with us. And we pay for that, first class.
[41:39] But still, we do not. They offer and give us some fruit, that's all.
[41:45] [Brahmananda:] Coming here on Air India, the stewardess was very surprised why they had so much of the
[41:51] elaborate meals prepared, but we don't take these things. [break]
[42:01] [Prabhupada:] Nobody is interested in spiritual life. Therefore no customer is coming,
[42:07] we go to sell our books there.
[42:10] [Interviewer:] Have you had a significant impact on the American society?
[42:14] [Prabhupada:] What is that?
[42:18] [Interviewer:] Have you had a significant impact on the American society? The values you preach, have they influenced Americans to a certain degree?
[42:24] [Brahmananda:] Oh, yes. You can go in America, any country, any city, and everyone will know "Hare Krsna."
[42:32] [Interviewer:] No, that's not what I mean. What I mean is have Americans started to be
[42:36] less violent, for instance, or have they started to be less egotistical, or have they started to be less...
[42:43] [Brahmananda:] Well, not unless they follow our movement.
[42:46] But those who have followed our movement... Recently there was one study that was
[42:50] published by a very eminent sociologist in America, from the University of California,
[42:56] the Union Theological Center. And he stated in that book that
[43:01] "The members of this movement, formerly they were drug-addicted hippies,
[43:06] and now they have become servants of Krsna and humanity. Loving servants."
[43:13] So he has given proof through intensive interviews that one who follows,
[43:21] joins this movement, he..., dramatically his life becomes changed.
[43:28] [Prabhupada:] He is a big professor, and his books are being sold in higher circle. Professor Judah.
[43:39] [Interviewer:] Is there [indistinct]? Will he take to [indistinct] movement?
[43:46] [Prabhupada:] Hmm? What is that?
[43:48] [Interviewer:] The movement of [indistinct] society.
[43:53] [Prabhupada:] I do not know anyone's movement. We are pushing on our movement
[44:00] on the basis of Bhagavad-gita, Krsna's movement.
[44:04] Therefore, we are named "Krishna Consciousness."
[44:07] So if you know about the Bhagavad-gita, then talk on that. Don't bring anyone else. [break]
[44:23] [Interviewer:] But I want to mention that [indistinct]. But I want to know why you are creating a class of sannyasis like these people to [indistinct] their work.
[44:39] [Prabhupada:] This is your ignorance. You do not know what is sadharma.
[44:44] Sadharma, according to Bhagavad-gita, sadharma means varnasrama-dharma:
[44:55] four varnas and four asramas. Brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sūdra,
[45:03] these are four varnas.
[45:05] And four asramas means brahmacari, grhasta, vanaprastha and sannyasa.
[45:15] So our Indian culture means varnasrama-dharma.
[45:22] Varnasramacaravata purusena paraḥ puman, visnur aradhyate pumsam... [VP. 3.8.9].
[45:31] It is a systematic way of social and spiritual life, this varnasrama-dharma.
[45:38] So unless one comes to this system of life, he's not a human being; he's animal. [break]
[45:48] [Brahmananda:] Our primary form of income is through the sale of books.
[45:52] Srila Prabhupada has written almost sixty books, of four hundred pages each.
[45:59] These books are published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, which has headquarters in
[46:04] Los Angeles, London and Bombay. London, Los Angeles and New York.
[46:24] So the amount of literature is quite large. First of all we have our
[46:29] Back to Godhead magazine, a monthly magazine that is
[46:33] now being published one million copies per month. Then, of the books...
[46:44] [Prabhupada:] What is the sale per month, give him.
[46:47] [Brahmananda:] The sale of the month is $250,000 per month. [break]
[46:50] ...approximately between 3:00 and 3:30 in the morning, and we take morning bath and put
[46:58] tilak on the body, twelve different places. Then we have mahgala-arati, we worship the Deity.
[47:11] Here we have the Deity of Gaura-Nitai. Our other temples we have Radha-Krsna.
[47:19] And after mahgala-arati, then we perform the japa meditation
[47:27] and we chant at least 16 rounds on the japa beads daily.
[47:34] That takes approximately two hours of time. The we have our classes.
[47:42] We have classes in Srimad-Bhagavatam, which is twelve cantos in length, 18,000 verses,
[47:50] and which has been given by Srila Prabhupada with very elaborate purports for each verse.
[47:56] So each day one verse is very carefully studied and analyzed and understood.
[48:05] Then we have our prasadam. We are vegetarians. We do not take any meat, fish or eggs.
[48:14] And then afterwards we have our morning duties. We have so many different activities, our work.
[48:24] In this way the day is spent up until approximately ten o'clock at night, when we take our rest. [break]
[48:37] [Prabhupada:] We send our children in Dallas.
[48:39] [Brahmananda:] We have our Gurukula school in Dallas, where we have the children of our householders.
[48:49] The children are sent there at the age of five, and there they are taught,
[48:55] in association with other children, these principles of Krsna consciousness.
[48:59] They are trained. They are trained in English and Sanskrit.
[49:04] They are trained in cleanliness, to be as brahmanas, to be the leaders of society.
[49:12] This is the present need of the modern civilization, that there is no brahmana class.
[49:18] And by brahmana class we don't mean those who are born brahmanas,
[49:22] but those who are qualified as brahmanas.
[49:25] At the present moment "brahmana" simply means that one has been born a brahmana.
[49:30] But that doesn't make one a qualified brahmana.
[49:33] Just like if my father is a high-court judge, that doesn't mean that I am a high-court judge.
[49:40] I also have to go to the university and take training and be recognized by the bar.
[49:48] So at the present moment, there is no institution that is actually training brahmanas.
[49:55] And without the brahmanas... The brahmanas are meant to be leaders of society,
[49:58] as Srila Prabhupada mentioned the varnasrama system,
[50:02] the leaders of that system are the brahmanas.
[50:06] And now we see in the modern civilization there is no one who is... [break]
Arrival Address, October 1, 1975
[50:11] [Indian Official:] So thank you very much, Swamiji, and hope that your stay will be very fruitful
[50:16] after a long and arduous work which you have been doing throughout the world. We hope that you will be...
[50:23] [Prabhupada:] I want to see the leading men of this place, because if they understand the importance
[50:31] of this movement, then my mission will be successful.
[50:35] [Indian Official:] You will have the opportunity of seeing.
[30:37] [Prabhupada:] Yes. Yad yad acarati sresthaḥ tat tad evetaro janaḥ [Bg. 3.21].
[50:42] In Bhagavad-gita it is said the leaders, whatever they do,
[50:47] the ordinary, common man follows. So if the leading men of Mauritius,
[50:56] if they understand the importance of this movement,
[51:00] then I am sure it will be very much beneficial for everyone.
[51:07] [Indian Official:] So thank you very much, Swamiji, on behalf of the people of Mauritius, and all our friends, and the NBC TV, who have been very kind enough. Here you have the chairman here.
[51:17] And we are very grateful to you. [break]
Arrival Address, October 1, 1975
[51:27] [Prabhupada:] The whole world is under the bodily concept of life,
[51:35] even big, big nations. Just like your prime minister has gone to the United Nation.
[51:49] There are many big, big men in the United Nation, they will speak,
[52:00] and they're speaking for the last thirty years
[52:05] the United Nation is formed, but they could not find any solution of the
[52:12] problems of life. Because the basic principle they are losing. They do not know.
[52:28] Every one of them is thinking of the bodily platform:
[52:36] "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am German" and "I am Englishman," like that.
[52:48] Therefore there is no solution, because the basic principle is wrong.
[53:01] Unless we understand what is the wrong of the active principle of the body,
[53:16] the problem cannot be solved.
[53:19] Just like if you cannot diagnose the disease, simply by symptomatic treatment he cannot make the... [break]
Lecture, October 1975
[53:32] [Prabhupada:] ...no gambling, no intoxication. This is materialistic way of life.
[53:39] Otherwise, what is the difference between this life and that life?
[53:48] So if we stick to the materialistic way of life, it will be very, very difficult
[53:56] to understand this Krsna consciousness movement.
[54:01] Matir na krsne parataḥ svato va mitho 'bhipadyeta grha-vratanam.
[54:09] Why? Adanta-gobhir. Adanta means uncontrolled. Uncontrolled.
[54:19] Our senses are uncontrolled.
[54:26] This morning, when I was walking on the beach, we found so many things,
[54:36] the capsule of the Coca-Cola, cigarette box, and so many other things.
[54:48] So what is the necessity of this Coca-Cola?
[54:52] We don't find all these things in our Society. We don't drink Coca-Cola,
[54:58] we don't drink Pepsi-Cola, we don't smoke.
[55:03] So many things which are selling in the market in huge quantity by advertisement,
[55:10] by victimizing the poor customer, but they are called unnecessary.
[55:19] There is no need of such things. But adanta-gobhir, because the senses cannot be controlled,
[55:28] they are making business. They are making business. Unnecessary.
[55:36] So we have to control the senses. If we really want spiritual life,
[55:44] if we really want to be freed from these material shackles,
[55:52] then we have to learn how to control the senses. That is wanted.
Morning Walk, October 3, 1975
[56:03] [Prabhupada:] That one. [referring to bird]
[56:04] [Brahmananda:] The red one?
[56:05] [Prabhupada:] Yes. That is also male. [break] Wife, children, they are also enjoying. [break]
[56:22] ...he will get in any form of life. [break]
[55:30] "They are loitering on the..., without any home. We have constructed this home. Therefore we are advanced." This is their philosophy.
[55:40] The business is the same. "That's all right. But we are improved." This is advancement.
