Prabhupada: It is said that there is no need for them to understand the Supreme Lord in essence, why? Because they have understood the real thing, love for Godhead, he has no further need to understand how big Krsna is, for this person with love for Godhead knows God, for example Mother Yasoda. When Krsna killed Pūtana Yasoda reached the spot, but thought that due to some godly power her boy was save, but she doesn't think that this son of her is the Supreme Perosnality of Godhead, for there's no need for her.
She gets the real object which is love for Godhead. Still this cannot be considered ordinary, why? Because those who consider the activities of Krsna to be ordinary avajananti mam mūḍha manusim tanum asritam [Bg. 9.11], ordinary people who have no knowledge they-param bhavam ajanant, they don't understand the Supreme position of the Supreme Lord. They think that Krsna, the Supreme Lord is just some common person, maybe just a little more powerful. This is called kūpa-manḍūka nyaya, the frog dwelling within the well, how can it possibly understand what is the Pacific Ocean?
It will simply imagine; it has never seen the Pacific Ocean. If someone meets him who has actually seen the Pacific, and he says to the frog, "I saw the Pacific, it is such a huge ocean." Well, the frog asks, how big is it? This well I live in is three feet wide, is it bigger than this? How much big, three- four inches? Or ten inches? So, he can keep on imagining but will never be able to understand how big the Pacific Ocean is. That is why those who are foolish, they think that Krsna is an ordinary person or maybe a great historic person. but one who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, that He cannot imagine, that is why Krsna Himself is revealing His glories to Him:
bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ
kham mano buddhir eva ca
ahahkara itiyam me
bhinna prakrtir astadha
[Bg. 7.4]
He Krsna, the Supreme Godhead Himself is explaining to us all in essence. That earth, water, bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ and air. Also, ahankara, that what we call ourselves, in English it has been said the law of identity. Everyone has his own ego, or actually false ego, but actually I am not this. It is simply a covering of bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ, this very body. This body bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ, tejo-vari-mrd vinimaya [SB 1.1.1], just like it has been said in the Bhagavata that the composition created by the mixture of fire, water and earth, is this body. This is the composition of the entire world, not just my and your bodies but the whole world, wherever you go is made up of these things bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ.
These things constitute our body, a house, a mountain, any material thing you can see is simply a combination of these elements. That is why those who are foolish they think that bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ, this earth, water, fire and air, when mixed automatically generate life. These big-big western philosophers, who have no knowledge about the spirit soul think that the soul is made up of the same earth, and in no way is different from the material elements. Similar, is the idea of Lord Buddha that this existence is simply due to a combination of earth, water, fire and air if this cage is broken then there will be no experience of the duality of happiness and distress. But God says that the elements of earth, eater fire air and ether, make up the body which is gross. However, there is another body, made up of mind intelligence and false ego, that is the subtle body. And within this subtle body there is the position of the spirit soul. According to the state of one's mind intelligence and false ego at the time of death one gets the next body. Just like is the wind flows over the rose garden, it takes up the scent of the roses but when it flows through the lavatory, it takes up its scent. Similarly, the karma of the living entity shape-up its mind, intelligence and false ego, according to these one gets his next body. This happens in the next life-karmana daiva-netrena jantur dehopapattaye [SB 3.31.1], according to one's karma one gets the body, which is why one should do good deeds, Krsna has said,
yanti deva-vrata devan
pitṝn yanti pitr-vrataḥ
bhūtani yanti bhūtejya
yanti mad-yajino 'pi mam
[Bg. 9.25]
It is very easy to understand, the way one will work in this lifetime, if one worships the demigods one will go the demigods yanti deva-vrata devan pitṝn yanti pitr-vrataḥ [Bg. 9.25], the rituals such as sraddha to satisfy the forefathers, they go the abode of forefathers. Those who are working hard in this world they stay within this world in the next life, they can be born in the body of any species including an animal, finally Krsna says, mad-yajino 'pi yanti mam, those who are my devotees he is engaged only in my service, will come back to Me. There are some foolish people who say that do this and this and you will merge into the Supreme Brahman. God is not such a cheap object, just like there is a big mission which says yatha math tatha path, whatever you do you will go back to God. Or you shall become God.
This is cheating, God says, yanti deva-vrata devan, those who are devoted to the demigods, they go the higher planets such as Brahma loka within this material world. Even in the Bhagavad-gita it has been said sahasra-yuga-paryantam ahar yad brahmano viduḥ [Bg. 8.17], our one yuga satya, treta, dvapara and kali, all these four combined are called a yuga, divya yuga or catur yuga, it has these different names in this way adding up one thousand catur yugas, make up one day of Lord Brahma, or twelve hours, from sunrise to sun set it is considered to be twelve hours, sometimes it is thirteen or even fourteen hours. So, generally twelve hours of Lord Brahma, is equal to our one catur yuga [satya, treata, dvapara, kali], one thousand times, now just consider that his lifetime is one hundred years so how long would his days, nights, months and years would be? So, when one attains Brahmaloka, one gets life same as that of Lord Brahma. When one attains moon planet, Candraloka one attains longevity of ten thousand years but death is sure, Lord Brahma has to die and so do we. Everyone. That is why Krsna says a-brahma-bhuvanal lokaḥ punar avartino 'rjuna [Bg. 8.16] even if one attains Brahmaloka, svargaloka, candra loka or mahar loka or jana loka, or even proceed further to the Brahmaloka, so a-brahma-bhuvana lokaḥ punar avartino 'rjuna [Bg. 8.16], this coming and going continues.
But if one attains my abode, then punar janma na vidyate, yad gatva na nivartante [Bg. 15.6] that is why those in human form of life should nicely practice devotional service and go Back to Godhead. Many people don't know this, but in the Bhagavad-gita all has been explained. But the people in general don't pay attention but everything has been given in the Bhagvad gita. One should simply understand it well and if one works accordingly then their lives will become successful. What is a successful life? I am a jiva soul a part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, myself and He both are persons, only God is vibhu and I am anu, He is infinite and I am infinitesimal. Somehow, or other we have become entangled within this material world, that's all. We need to become free from this situation and attain our eternal body full of knowledge and bliss saccidananda body and go back to Godhead and live with Him-yad gatva na nivartante, tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6], for eternity ntyo nityanam, in the Vedas it has been said God is eternal and all of us are eternal then why are we suffering in this material world, this they cannot understand. Such a person is like an animal for he cannot understand why he is working so hard.
In this way those who are not curious and simply work hard all day long and they don't have any consideration about the Supreme Lord, they are simply animals. They are known as animals, that's all. Ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca, that is why Krsna Himself has given the analysis. He is explaining each and every aspect, this material world is made up of five elements, bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ kham mano buddhir eva ca [Bg. 7.4], these five material elements are gross and subtle material elements are mind, intelligence and false ego. So, Krsna says iti 'yam me bhinna prakrtir astadha [Bg. 7.4], these eight types of material elements, this is My property but separate from Me. For example, just like I am speaking to you, and also my words can be recorded in a tape recorder, upon replaying the recording it will appear that I am speaking and it is not separate from me. Even though it is separate but upon replaying it will appear that I am speaking.
In this way in the material world because the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme entity and the material world has been created by His separate material energy, this is very much apparent and Krsna says bhinnam, om tat sat, this is eternal, it is not temporary. It undergoes all the six types of changes, it takes birth, stays for some times, grows, dwindles and dies. Just like our body, in the beginning we were very small within the womb as small, as a seed. Then this small body gradually grows and develops orifices. The orifices develop into nose, ears etc. there are nine orifices in all gradually when the body is fully developed it comes out of the mother's womb and the activities begin. Then, this body of physical matter gradually, after birth, followed by growth and staying for some time like twenty, fifty at most a hundred years, in which time it gives birth to a couple or so offsprings then dwindles into old age. And after dwindling for some time one day it will be destroyed. This is the rule for every material body, you can consider this for your body or for the body of an elephant, all of these bodies follow the procedure they take birth, stay for sometime, grow, dwindle and die. But the living entitites-avinasi tu tad viddhi [Bg. 2.17], these foolish people don't understand, they thing that when the body dies everything is finished but that is not the fact
Everything is not finished at death, the living entity takes up another body according to his karma, this the foolish people cannot understand but there is no difficulty-Krsna says:
dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
[Bg. 2.13]
It does not take too long to understand this-dehino 'smin yatha dehe, this body of ours it was very small in the beginning. Then it grew more into a boy's body, so he body which comes out from the womb of the mother is now gone, now one has obtained a bigger body, then the body gets even bigger into a young man's body. When people come and tell us how much we have grown since the time we were very little in our mother's lap. But we don't change, we are not affected. We are eternal living beings only changing bodies, similarly at the time there will be another change of body. What is the difficulty in understanding this?
Krsna is explaining this dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara tatha dehantara-praptih, in this life there are many transformations but the soul is not affected by these bodily transformation na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20], upon being destroyed the spirit soul is not destroyed with the body. Now a days the people in this materialistic civilization do not understand nor do they endeavor to understand, and if someone tries to explain them the same thing they make fun of him. They have become so foolish. What devotional service can they perform? What austerity will they perform, they have no knowledge in the first place. That is why for Kaliyuga it has been given in the scriptures:
harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha
Everyone's brain in Kali yuga is already adversely effected mandaḥ sumanda-matayo , but they think that they are very much advanced in intelligence. "We have created motor cars." No, still their brains are spoiled in this Kali yuga-nasta buddhayah mandaḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhagya hy upadrutaḥ , the symptoms of Kali yuga are firstly, manda, they are foolish and cannot understand anything. If anyone tries to explain things, they are hindered by their foolish opinions, for they sometimes say that consciousness is born from soil. If consciousness is made of matter such as earth, why can they not make it in the laboratory? At least you can make an ant but they cannot make it and still stick to the theory of Darwinism in all the big-big western countries, they are so-called scientists by actually they are all fools. They wish to make earth conscious like a living being but that is not possible for the living beings is different. Which is why Krsna says apareyam itas tv anyam prakrtim viddhi me para [Bg. 7.5], these material elements bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ [Bg. 7.4], these are inferior nature apara, apareyam these are much less valuable, lower or of inferior quality.
So, apareyam itas tv anyam prakrtim viddhi me para [Bg. 7.5], there is another nature apart from this material nature and that is para prakrti, and what is that? Jiva bhuta, this is straight, talk of fact-jiva-bhūtam maha-baho yayedam dharyate jagat [Bg. 7.4], this para prakrti higher nature are the living beings who are trying to enjoy. They are not enjoyers but are trying to enjoy, everyone wishes to enjoy in this world like anything. That is why they are considered intelligent and knowledgeable and are termed as para prakrti. So, the living beings are called para prakrti, superior nature and the nature which is used for its enjoyment the material things are apara prakrti, inferior nature. The living entity is para prakrti but is still not the enjoyer or bhokta, prakrti itself means bhogya, that which is enjoyed.
So, God is the Enjoyer, govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami [Bs. 5.21], and all His energies para prakrti and apara prakrti they are enjoyed, they are supposed to be enjoyed by God. However, the living entity considers all these things to be for his own enjoyment, this is nothing more than illusion, maya. God is purusa and this material nature, cit prakrti is meant for His enjoyment but when we forget that Krsna is the enjoyer and when I wish to enjoy-that very tendency is called maya. Such is the cycle of maya.
That which I am not, and artificially we are trying to do. That is called maya. We are not enjoyers, bhokta because it is God's property this prakrti bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ, all of that combined makes up one material nature. The living being as it is further said by Krsna Himself that both are energies of the Supreme Lord. So, what is right for us?
The only enjoyer is the Supreme Personality of Godhead bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29], because everything has been created by the energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead bhūmir apo 'nalo vayuḥ [Bg. 7.4] and putting these elements together a big entity is created. So, that is God's property and further on Krsna says that the living entity and the material nature both are the property of the Supreme Lord. So, what can now be proper behavior for us? This means that to serve towards the enjoyment of the Supreme Lord will get us to desired liberation, mukti. Mukti simply means svarūpena vyavasthitiḥ muktir hitvanyatha-rūpam [SB 2.10.6], here in this material world we are energies but are trying to become enjoyers, this tendency is the illusion which has bound us to this material world. Now, if I being the energy accept the position of energy and become the object of enjoyment of the Supreme Lord that is mukti, liberation, that's all. Mukti means nothing other than being situated in our original position. When we being the enjoyed [energy of the Supreme Energetic, God], and God the enjoyer, so we are the object of God's enjoyment. That is why the way God wishes to enjoy us, the way He orders us, if we act accordingly, that will be our state of liberation, nothing else. We don't have to do anything else. If you try to understand this:
apareyam itas tv anyam
prakrtim viddhi me param
jiva-bhūtam maha-baho
yayedam dharyate jagat
[Bg. 7.5]
This living entity jiva prakrti is trying to become the purusa, enjoyer of the world and in this world everyone is imitating to become the enjoyer which is why there is so much quarrel. But if both of us simply understand that we are energies and we cannot enjoy this world, so what is the point of fighting? We are both objects of God's enjoyment, then if we take to Krsna's service then there will be no question of quarrel. This they don't understand that is why Bhagavad-gita should be understood very nicely and if we apply its principles only then shall we attain peace. Krsna Himself says:
bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhūtanam
jnatva mam santim rcchati
[Bg. 5.29]
If we are looking for peace then we need to understand this clearly that the enjoyer is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and we are all to be enjoyed. This planet earth, bhūloka and there are many other planets, lokas such as maharloka, tapoloka, and there are millions of planets, Krsna says that bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29], and He is saying that I am the proprietor of all the planets, so if God is the master of all the planets then what shall remain for our enjoyment. This they do not understand that is why devotional service, this Krsna consciousness movement is preaching all over the world the same thing. The people in general are forgetting these facts and for made up reasons they quarrel and have become disturbed. Everyone is unhappy and when they will become Krsna conscious and will accept Krsna as krsnastu bhagavan svayam [SB 1.3.28], Krsna is the Supreme Master and I am His servant, how can they become happy, regardless of external condition. It is not like that a person becomes happy by amassing wealth, no, even those who are very wealthy are unhappy. We meet many types of people including those who are very, very wealthy, even they are distressed.
You all know that everywhere, everyone has a reason to be unhappy, the reason behind is the forgetfulness of one's eternal position svarūpa. That is why Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said, the position of the living beings is nitya-krsna-dasa, since time immemorial we are servants of the Supreme Lord. It is not like if we engage in devotional service all night long the next morning, we will become God. No, this is not the fact, nitya dasa, today the living entity is the servant of God even after liberation one will remain His eternal servant. And the mistaken identity is to think that we are the enjoyers, the masters. We are all servants, all of you sitting here, is anyone the master? No, everyone is the servant. Someone is the servant of a shopkeeper, someone the servant of the Government, some a servant of the woman, a servant of a minister and the minister is the servant of everyone. The governor is the servant of the entire nation for when he doesn't get the majority of votes, he will be out of a job.
So, everyone is a servant, but they think that they are masters, this is called maya, that's all. Anyone you take is a servant but they don't wish to accept the servitorship of God. They will become servant of the people, of the nation, of their families, and if nothing, the servants of their dogs or horses but they will never become servants of God. This is going on; everyone is a servant and they will remain so forever. Just like we organized civil disobedience. You all may know that we refused to accept the government, so we were all picked up one by one and were thrown in jail where we were beating like anything. So, if one doesn't accept servitorship on their own they are forced to do so by the rule of the government.
Just a simple example is that if we follow the law of government we will not have to face the police or the military. In this way the living being is by original nature is the servant of the Supreme Lord, but they refuse such a position claiming to be masters themselves. Right at that moment they are grabbed by maya and with the trident maya carries in her hand, she punishes such rebellious souls. The trident is called threefold miseries adhyatmika, adhibhautika and adhidaivika, that is why those who are intelligent living begins they think that I don't want any distress but why I am forced to suffer pains in the form of these three fold miseries?
This is what a human being should do, just like Sanatana Goswami approached Caitanya Mahaprabhu and asked him ami kena more tapa traya, if one approaches a guru he should have a query, which should be-what is my original position? I don't wish for any distress but I it is forced upon him. This is to be inquire for, accepting a guru is for solving these problems. Just like in the beginning Arjuna was speaking with Krsna as a friend. But when that proved useless then he accepted Krsna as the spiritual master, sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam tvam prapannam [Bg. 2.7], I wish to become your disciple He said. Please instruct me how I solve the problem of this flickering mind which is refusing to fight having already come to this battlefield. So, the Lord explained him the Bhagavad-gita and we should understand the same accordingly, that we don't wish for distress but it is forced upon it. What is the solution to this? When we will ask this question, then gradually, we will ask about God, our relationship with Him, this will solve our problems and we will engage in His service and become free from all distress. That is why in Kali yuga there is only one but a very simple solution to all these concerns, devotional service.
