bhagavatam is commentary

If one studies Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam carefully, he will find that all the Upaniṣads and the Vedānta-sūtra are nicely explained therein.
From this and the preceding three verses of Caitanya-caritamrta, which have been selected from the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the missionary activities of Lord Caitanya can be understood. Srimad-Bhagavatam has 18,000 verses, which are summarized in the four verses beginning with aham evasam evagre (53) and concluding with yat syat sarvatra sarvada (56). In the first of these verses (53) the transcendental nature of Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is explained. The second verse (54) further explains that the Lord is detached from the workings of the material energy, maya. The living entities, as parts and parcels of Lord Krsna, are prone to be controlled by the external energy because although they are spiritual, in the material world they are encased in bodies of material energy. The eternal relationship of the living entities with the Supreme Lord is explained in that verse. The next verse (55) instructs that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by His inconceivable energies, is simultaneously one with and different from the living entities and the material energy. This knowledge is called acintya-bhedabheda-tattva. When an individual living entity surrenders to Lord Krsna, he can then develop natural transcendental love for the Supreme Lord. This surrendering process should be the primary concern of a human being. In the next verse (56) it is said that a conditioned soul must ultimately approach a bona fide spiritual master and try to understand perfectly the material and spiritual worlds and his own existential position. Here the words anvaya-vyatirekabhyam, "directly and indirectly," suggest that one must learn the process of devotional service in its two aspects: one must directly execute the process of devotional service and indirectly avoid the impediments to progress.    (More...)
Gopala Krsna: Okay. "Point one. Blitz: Ungodly Face of Krsna Consciousness. ISKCON..." So ISKCON is replying now. "The International Society for Krsna Consciousness is a worldwide community of devotees practicing the Vedic teachings, the eternal science of rendering devotional service to Sri Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Society was founded by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, a pure devotee of God, who is coming down in parampara started by Lord Sri Krsna five thousand years ago. In other words, the roots of this movement trace back to at least five thousand years. It is not a modern concoction. In India our Society is registered under the Society Registration Act No. 21 of 1860. As we are a registered nonprofit organization, we are required to maintain complete account of all donations received, both within India and from abroad, thus keep a complete account of all our expenses. Our accounts are audited every year and submitted to the income tax authorities and the Charity Commissioner. Very briefly, the main object of the Society, as registered with the government, is..." I've given them the three main points from your memorandum of the Association. "To advance, transmit and spread the ethical and philosophical principles of Krsna consciousness, as revealed in the teachings of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, and the doctrines and the observances which serve to promote and manifest the said ethical and philosophical principles in the furtherance of the subject. To build or to assist in building temples, schools, colleges, hospitals and other buildings in connection with or for the advancement of the objects of the Society and to maintain, alter and improve the same, including existing buildings, and to furnish and equip the same. To print, publish, sell or cause to be printed, published or sold, or to distribute books, booklets, leaflets, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly newspapers, magazines or other periodicals for the purpose of giving information for the work of the Society. We refrain from four categories of sinful activities, such as meat-eating, intoxication, gambling and illicit sex life. Furthermore, our entire life is dedicated to reading, chanting and preaching about Krsna. We rise at 4 a.m. all over the world. So how can Blitz say that we are ungodly when we are following Lord Sri Krsna's teachings?" This is my reply to point one. It's okay?    (More...)

One day Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to take a bath at Panca-nada, and afterwards all His devotees began chanting the Hare Krsna mantra in front of the temple of Bindu Madhava. At this time Prakasananda Sarasvati and all his devotees approached the Lord. Prakasananda Sarasvati immediately fell down at the lotus feet of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and very much regretted his past behavior toward the Lord. He asked Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu about devotional service in terms of the Vedanta-sūtra, and the Lord told him about devotional service that is approved by great personalities who know the Vedanta-sūtra. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then pointed out that Srimad-Bhagavatam is the proper commentary on the Vedanta-sūtra. He then explained the catuḥ-sloki (four slokas) of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the essence of that great scripture.    (More...)

Pranava or Omkara is the divine substance of all the Vedas. Omkara is explained further in the Gayatri Mantra, as exactly explained in the Srimad Bhagwatam. There are four verses in this connection. These verses are explained to Brahma, and Brahma explained them again to Narada, and Narada explained them to Vyasa. Therefore the purport of the verses in the Srimad Bhagwatam comes down in disciplic succession. It is not that anyone and everyone can make his own commentary on the Vedanta Sutra foolishly, and mislead the readers. Anyone who wants to understand Vedanta Sutra must read Srimad Bhagwatam carefully. Under the instruction of Narada Muni, Vyasadeva compiled Srimad Bhagwatam with the purpose of explaining the Vedanta Sutra codes. Vedanta Sutra was written before Bhagwatam. After hearing from Narada Muni, Vyasadeva commentated on the Vedanta Sutra. By writing Srimad Bhagwatam He collected all the essence of the Upanishads, the purpose of which was explained also in the Vedanta Sutra. Srimad Bhagwatam is therefore the essence of all Vedic knowledge. That which is stated in the Upanishads and stated in the Vedanta Sutra is explained very nicely in the Srimad Bhagwatam.    (More...)

When Caitanya Mahaprabhu was talking with Prakasananda Sarasvati, Prakasananda Sarasvati was very learned scholar and he knew that Caitanya Mahaprabhu was also very great scholar. So he was criticizing Him that "This sannyasi from Bengal who has come to Benares, He is simply chanting and dancing and does not give attention in the reading of Vedanta, so He is not a bona fide sannyasi. He is sentimental." He was thinking like that, but one brahmana, Maharashtria brahmana, he arranged a meeting with Prakasananda Sarasvati and Lord Caitanya. There was discussion. So Prakasananda Sarasvati inquired from Him that "You are a sannyasi. Instead of giving Your attention in the matter of reading Vedanta-sūtra, Sahkhya philosophy, what is this that You are chanting and dancing?" So Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied that "My guru found Me I am a fool number one, guru more mūrkha dekhi, I am not very much learned. So he said, My guru said, that 'You cannot read Vedanta-sūtra.' " Actually Vedanta-sūtra, Vedanta philosophy, is not meant for ordinary learned person. It requires great knowledge in Sanskrit language and philosophy. So He, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, took the part of ordinary person at the present moment that guru more mūrkha dekhi' karila sasana. Generally, people are not so learned that they can understand Vedanta-sūtra. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu, taking the part of the mūrkha society, the illiterate, ignorant society, He said that "I cannot read Vedanta-sūtra. It is not possible. He advised Me to chant Hare Krsna, and I am doing that. And I am getting the result."    (More...)

So explanation of Vedanta-sūtra is Srimad-Bhagavatam. Srimad-Bhagavatam begins that what is that tattva. Janmady asya. Janmady asya, from whom everything has emanated, or the Supreme, which is the source of everything. So what is the nature of that source? That is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam: janmady asya yataḥ anvayad itaratas ca arthesu abhijnaḥ. That source is abhijnaḥ, cognizant, not matter. Matter is not cognizant. Life. Janmady asya yataḥ, cognizant. So these scientists' theory, modern theory, that life comes from matter, this is wrong. The life comes from life. Because in the Bhagava..., Srimad-Bhagavatam it is explained that janmady asya yataḥ anvayad itaratas ca arthesu abhijnaḥ. The identity from whom everything emanates, He's abhijnaḥ, cognizant. He can understand. So cognizant means life. Not only that. Tene brahma hrda adi-kavaye: He instructed knowledge to Lord Brahma, about Vedic knowledge. So unless one is living entity, how he can impart knowledge?    (More...)
So actually, the Absolute Truth is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, or the Vedanta-sūtra's explanation, natural explanation... Actually, Srimad-Bhagavatam was written by Vyasadeva. Here it is said, dvaipayana-sakha. Dvaipayana means Vyasadeva. Vyasadeva compiled this Brahma-sūtra, and he explained it, bhasyam brahma-sūtranam, this Srimad-Bhagavatam. If we read some artificial comments on Brahma-sūtra, we'll misunderstand. Generally, these Mayavadis give prominence of the comment given by Sahkaracarya about Brahma-sūtra, Sariraka-bhasya. But that is unnatural. The natural commentation is given by the author himself, Vyasadeva. So we have to understand... Vyasadeva has written Brahma-sūtra, and we have to understand the meaning of Brahma... Brahma-sūtra means codes only. So codes can be explained by the author himself. So our process is to accept the Brahma-sūtra. Brahma-sūtra-padais caiva hetumadbhir viniscitaiḥ [Bg 13.5]. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita. So Brahma-sūtra is nyaya-prasthana. Nyaya-prasthana: very logically, transcendental knowledge. So brahma-sūtra-padais caiva hetumadbhir viniscitaiḥ. So we must... Therefore, according to our Vedic system, the acarya must understand Brahma-sūtra and explain. Then he'll be accepted as acarya.    (More...)

Guru, as Krsna said... Krsna is the original guru. He is Brahma's guru. Then who can be better guru than Krsna? Tene brahma hrda adi-kavaye. He instructed Brahma. Brahma instructed Narada, and Narada instructed Vyasadeva, and Vyasadeva has given us so many literatures. This is called parampara system. Vedavyasa. Vyasadeva has given us four Vedas: Sama, Yajur, Rg, Atharva; then explained them in the 108 Puranas. Then again, he has summarized them in Vedanta-sūtra. Then again, he has explained the Vedanta-sūtra by Srimad-Bhagavatam, Brahma-sūtra-bhasya. In every chapter of Srimad-Bhagavatam you will find this statement by Vyasadeva, brahma-sūtra-bhasya. Brahma-sūtra-bhasya is not that Sahkara's bhasya, Sariraka-bhasya. That is artificial. Here the brahma-sūtra-bhasya. Brahma-sūtra is written by Vyasadeva, and because he knew that in future so many rascals will misinterpret this Brahma-sūtra, therefore he compiled personally the bhasya of Brahma-sūtra. That is Srimad-Bhagavatam. Bhasyam brahma-sūtranam vedartha-paribrmhitam: "The meaning of the Vedas is completely described, and it is the original comment on Brahma-sūtra." Therefore you will see Srimad-Bhagavatam begins from the words of Brahma-sūtra: jivasya tattva-jijnasa [SB 1.2.10].    (More...)

We have to see how wonderfully the subtle actions are described in Sahkhya philosophy by Kapiladeva. There are many modern psychologist, scientist, physist, but they cannot analyze the subtle function that is going on, creating things as they are. Superficially we can see, but how things are taking place, that can be described in the Vedic literatures, not any other book. Therefore it is said, vidya bhagavatavadhiḥ: "One who has studied Srimad-Bhagavatam thoroughly, he has seen the end of knowledge." And actually, Srimad-Bhagavatam is the commentary, or explanation, on the Vedanta-sūtra. Vyasadeva made Vedanta-sūtra, the ultimate knowledge, and he made his comment also, natural commentary. That is Srimad-Bhagavatam. At the end of every chapter of Srimad-Bhagavatam you will find, brahma-sūtrasya bhasya: "It is the natural comment of Brahma-sūtra." So if we study Srimad-Bhagavatam very thoroughly, and specifically from a person bhagavata, then our life is successful. Nityam bhagavata-sevaya [SB 1.2.18]. That is the instruction, nityam.    (More...)

The Vedas, they begin with the Upanisad. Vedanta-sūtra, Upanisad, they are all Vedic literature. Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, they are all Vedic literatures. Four Vedas-Sama, Yajur, Rg, Atharva-then the Upanisad, then the Vedanta-sūtra, then Srimad-Bhagavatam. Srimad-Bhagavatam and Vedanta-sūtra is the same thing. It is explanation. Therefore at the end of each chapter of Srimad-Bhagavatam it is stated by Vyasadeva, brahma-sūtrasya bhasya. Srimad-Bhagavatam means comment on the Brahma-sūtra. Brahma-sūtra is the gist code of all Vedic literature. And then it is explained, athato brahma-jijnasa. That is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Jivasya tattva-jijnasa [SB 1.2.10]: "Jivasya, for living being, the only business is to enquire about the Absolute Truth." That is the only business.    (More...)
No ordinary living entity can interpret Vedānta-sūtra according to his mundane conceptions.
The distinction is always made between the devotee of God and God Himself, but a neophyte servant of the devotees should respect the servants of God as God. "These servants of God are to be respected as God by the devotees who actually want to go back to Godhead. Such servants of God are called mahatmas [great souls] or tirthas [saints able to deliver fallen souls], and they make various propaganda according to the particular time and space. The standard quality of the servants of God is that they canvass people to become devotees of the Lord, and they never tolerate the blasphemy of being called God. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was God Himself according to the authoritative indications of the revealed scriptures, but He played the part of a devotee. When a person knew Him to be God Himself and addressed Him as God, He used to block His ears with His hands and murmur the name of the Lord Visnu. He strongly protested being called God, although undoubtedly He was God Himself. This behavior of the Lord is just to warn unscrupulous men who take false pleasure in being called God." We should understand that Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the real explanation of the Brahma-sūtra, and it is compiled by Vyāsadeva himself.
We should understand, therefore, that Srimad Bhagwatam is the real explanasion of the Brahma Sutra, and it is compiled by the Author Himself. In the PuranaGuru Purana it is said: "The Srimad Bhagwatam] of Srimad Bhagwatam, it is clearly stated the Srimad Bhagwatam is the essence of all Vedanta knowledge, and one who relishes the knowledge from the Srimad Bhagwatam has no taste for studying any other literature. In the very beginning of Srimad Bhagwatam, the meaning and purpose of the Gayatri Mantra is also described: "I am offering my obeisances unto the Supreme Truth." This is the first introductory verse on the Supreme Truth, described in the Bhagwatam as the Source of creation, maintenance, and dissolution of the cosmic manifestation.    (More...)
Therefore, in this prayer of the Author of Bhagwatam, the first proposition is that Lord Sri Krishna is the Primeval Lord, and if any transcendental nomenclature for the Absolute Personality of Godhead has to be understood, it must be the Name indicated by the word Krishna, the All-attractive. In the Bhagavad Gita [10.12-14] in many passages the Lord has affirmed Himself as the Original Personality of Godhead, and it is confirmed by Arjuna, with the authorized statements of great sages like Narada, Vyasa, and many others. In the Padma Puranam also it is said that, of innumerable Names of the Lord, the Name of Krishna is the principal Name. Therefore, although Vasudeva indicates the plenary portion of the Personality of Godhead, and although all the different Forms of the Lord are identical with Vasudeva, in this text Vasudeva is principally meant to indicate the Divine Son of Vasudeva and Devaki. Sri Krishna is always meditated upon by the Paramhansas, or the most perfect of the renounced order of life. This Vasudeva, or Lord Sri Krishna. is the Cause of all causes. Everything that exists is an emanation from the Lord, and how this so happens is explained in later chapters of Srimad Bhagwatam.    (More...)
