Madhava showed great creativity in his mathematical work, and is credited with inventing the power series expansion for the arc-tangent function, which was separately discovered in Europe by James Gregory in 1671 (SA, p. 182). Since Madhava lived in a traditional Indian cultural milieu, such mathematical creativity has presumably been available in India for thousands of years.
