Puerto Rico

Even as I sit to write
these words
under the evening light
the mind puts up a tremendous fight.

It concocts the paltry conception
of possibly gaining recognition
for a masterful poetic creation.

No matter the activity performed
the mind is incessantly torn
apart
by these impure desires.
It seeks, like a miser, to be adorned
With the glass jewels of fame, adoration
and distinction.

These three baubles I don't admire
but their presence arouses that impelling desire
to be crowned as Isvara.

Coronated as "I am" (in existence) apart from Krsna
and attempting to establish this fact
this false king (the mind) tries to preserve what
he has
and independently carry what he lacks.

But that burden of illusion is great
and my feet are slipping under the heavy weight.
The only thing which can change this fate
is the mercy-stick of support
from Sri Gurudeva.

Srila Prabhupada,
with your smiling lotus face
and swanlike grace
you extend that rod
with a reassuring nod
and encourage all to take hold.

Your unlimited mercy one cannot estimate
yet this is but one of your unlimited traits
of many that you possess.

I'm simply praying
despite the asslike braying
of this untamed mind
that I may hear your words
with an open ear
and lock them in this leaden heart
then instead of speculation
draw on the truth you impart
that Krsna is God
and I His servant.
