LOS ANGELES
When Prthu Maharaja met the four Kumaras, he stated that "great personalities can be satisfied only by their own activities, which are distributed amongst human society out of their unlimited mercy." Therefore, our attempt to glorify you can best be done by describing your activities, otherwise we can see no other means of satisfying you. We saw a living example of this last year in London on Vyasa-pūja day, the very last Vyasa-pūja day we would be able to spend with you in your manifest presence. As you sat in your elevated palanquin across from Sri Sri Radha-Gokulananda, your eyes gazing on them with love beyond our comprehension, your servant began to recite the history of Your Divine Grace's transcendental activities in this material world. We gazed up at Your Divine Grace in your weakened state, and we watched as you tilted your head back, and your face spread with a glowing smile of eternal satisfaction. In this wonderful mood of ecstasy, you sat and heard your pastimes, the activities of one who is always in direct communication with Krsna. May we always be immersed in remembrance of this scene on that final Vyasa-pūja day.
Now, one year later, we are feeling the pangs of separation from your lotus feet. The Vyasa-pūja book is complete, but for the first time we are unable to mail you the first copies from the printer. In this condition, we can remember the glorious times when we would bring you a new book, the tangible result of your hours of selfless labor, and these memories bring us back once again into the peaceful, loving shelter of your association. Please allow us to recall some of these incidents for our own benefit and your eternal glorification.
One time we brought you a new Back to Godhead magazine. On the back cover was an advertisement showing a stack of your books extending up into the sky. With a wonderful smile, you looked at the tower of books and said, "Come on!" challenging the entire world to try to defeat you. A maha-ratha is nothing compared to you. He can only fight with ten thousand warriors at a time, while you are prepared to battle with all the demoniac living entities within this material world. Thus your father named you after the "fearless lotus feet of Lord Krsna."
The last time you were in your beloved Mayapur, you were looking at some new paintings, although your sickness had you in a very weakened state. You came to the picture of Lord Ramacandra breaking the bow of Lord Siva at the assembly where mother Sita was to choose her husband, with all the competitors falling down unconscious. Looking up at us, you smiled and said in a feeble voice, "It is not so easy business to marry Sitadevi." When an ordinary man would have been in great distress, you continued to inspire us with your transcendental sense of humor in your relationship with the Lord.
On another occasion, in New York at the time of the Fifth Avenue Ratha-yatra, your last days ever in America, a new Bhagavatam volume was ready at the printer. In our own foolish way, we decided we would surprise you. We picked up the books at the airport and arrived back at the temple well past midnight. As usual, you were awake, working on your translations. Your slippers rested outside the door to your darsana room, while you were around the corner and down the hall by your bedroom. Being your transcendental children, we hid the new book behind our backs and waited for you to come around the corner. As you rounded the corner, you saw us standing there with huge grins and our hands behind our backs. Chuckling, you walked into your darsana room, motioned with your hand, and said, "Come on!" (your all-purpose slogan). As you stood on your asana preparing to sit, we were unable to control ourselves any longer and handed you the beautiful new gold-bound book. In great ecstasy, you touched the book to your head and began to page through it, so immersed that you didn't even sit down. As always, you spoke the introductory verse and sat down to look at the paintings. Then, deep in thought, you paged through the book and read to us and preached for an hour and a half. It was impossible to appreciate your transcendental glories. Without caring for your body, you could go on forever talking about Krsna and His devotional service. You knew no limits to the pleasure of sravanam kirtanam because you are an intimate associate of Radha and Krsna who descended on this world at Their request to reclaim Their fallen servants.
Feeling the pangs of separation while remembering these transcendental activities of Your Divine Grace, we can only follow in the footsteps of Arjuna when he heard of Lord Krsna's disappearance from the earth:
"Due to grief, Arjuna's mouth and lotuslike heart had become dried up. Therefore his body lost all luster. Now, remembering the Supreme Lord, he could hardly utter a word in reply. With great difficulty he checked the tears of grief that smeared his eyes. He was very distressed because Lord Krsna was out of his sight, and he increasingly felt affection for Him. Remembering Lord Krsna and His well wishes, benefactions, intimate familial relations and His chariot driving, Arjuna, overwhelmed and breathing very heavily, began to speak. Arjuna said: 'O King! The Supreme Personality of Godhead Hari, who treated me exactly like an intimate friend, has left me alone. Thus my astounding power, which astonished even the demigods, is no longer with me. I have just lost Him whose separation for a moment would render all the universes favorable and void, as bodies without life.'"
After relating some of his pastimes with the Lord, Arjuna finally stated, "Now I am attracted to those instructions imparted to me by the Personality of Godhead [Govinda] because they are impregnated with instructions for relieving the burning heart in all circumstances of time and space. Sūta Gosvami said, "Thus being deeply absorbed in thinking of the instructions of the Lord, which were imparted in the great intimacy of friendship, and in thinking of His lotus feet, Arjuna's mind became pacified and free from all material contamination."
So, in the same way that Arjuna's distress could only be relieved by Krsna's instructions, we can once again live in your association by following your instructions. You have told us many times that everything is in your books; there is no need to look anywhere else for shelter. Anybody that reads your books knows what to do-chant sixteen rounds, follow the four regulative principles, attend the temple programs, preach Krsna consciousness vigorously and serve the Lord with every spare moment, under the direction of the guru. If we can simply do these things, you have guaranteed us that we will return back home, back to Godhead. We therefore humbly pray at your lotus feet to give us the strength to constantly remember and follow your instructions. We lie prostrate at your feet and beg this benediction from you. Please, Srila Prabhupada, please pray to your Guru Maharaja and self-realization Sri Gaura-Nitai to empower all of your disciples to always follow your instructions. If we can accept this mercy, then it is guaranteed that this movement will overwhelm the world, and those who sincerely participate will one day again have the opportunity of sitting at your lotus feet, receiving your merciful glances of love.
