The Meaning of Vyāsa-pūjā

The Meaning of Vyasa-pūja
There is a secret to understanding Vedic knowledge:
yasya deve para bhaktir
yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthaḥ
prakasante mahatmanaḥ
"Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the tenets of the Vedic scriptures automatically revealed." [SU 6.23]
If we at all want to follow the Vedic path to knowledge, we must observe the spiritual master's appearance day with proper veneration. Vyasa-pūja is the special pūja (worship) named after Vyasa, the supreme authority on the Vedic literature, and offered to the spiritual master on his birthday.
As the empowered literary incarnation of Godhead, Vyasa compiled all the Vedas, Puranas, Upaniads, and Mahabharata on the instructions of Narada, his spiritual master. Narada learned the Vedic wisdom from Brahma, who originally received it from the Supreme Lord Visnu in his heart. The same transcendental knowledge comes in parampara, the unbroken chain of disiplic succession, from Vyasa through Madhva and others to Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the most munificient incarnation of Lord Sri Krsna, transmitted the essence of Vedic knowledge by means of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. As Lord Caitanya Himself explained to Prakasananda Sarasvati:
guru more mūrkha dekhi' karila sasana
mūrkha tumi, tomara nahika vedantadhikara
'krsna-mantra' japa sada,-ei mantra-sara
"My spiritual master considered Me as a fool, and therefore he chastised Me. 'You are a fool,' he said. 'You are not qualified to study Vedanta philosophy, and therefore You must always chant the holy name of Krsna. This is the essence of all mantras or Vedic hymns.'"
During the past century, Lord Caitanya's pure representatives Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura planted the seeds of a movement to spread the maha-mantra all over the world. Those seeds have fructified in the form of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who has, in the past decade, initiated thousands of disciples for more than thirty countries in the chanting of Hare Krsna.
Srila Prabhupada is the most worthy recipient of Vyasa-puja because only he has given Vyasadeva's literatures to so many without changing the meaning one iota. In fact, four hundred fifty years ago, the great acarya Srila Vrndavana dasa Thakura wrote that in the future, representatives of Vyasadeva would elaborately describe the pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, a statement later confirmed by Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. By reading the publication of Srila Prabhupada's Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, we can understand that he is such a representative. Srila Prabhupada's books prompted one Indian scholar to write, "Upon seeing the work of Swami Bhaktivedanta, one is tempted to wonder whether he is not the same Vyasa reborn to present his literatures in a universal language for modern man."
Srila Prabhupada, as your disciples, we are offering our very inadequate glorifications of you in the pages of this Ninth Annual ISKCON Vyasa-puja book. We simply pray that you will find some pleasure in our meager efforts, for that is the actual meaning of Vyasa-puja.
His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, the foremost devotee and scholar of the previous age, is the spiritual master of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He is the ocean of transcendental mercy and the bestower of devotional service upon the fallen souls. His is the deliverer of devotional service which is enriched with the conjugal love of Sri-Sri Radha and Krsna. He is the personified teachings of Lord Caitanya. Thus, he never tolerates any statement against the teaching of devotional service as enunciated by Srila Rūpa Gosvami.
In 1936, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada delivered this poem as a Vyasa-Pūja homage for His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Adore adore ye all
The happy day,
Blessed than heaven,
Sweeter than May,
When he appeared at Puri
The holy place,
My Lord and Master
His Divine Grace.
Oh! my Master
The evangelic angel,
Give us Thy light,
Lit up Thy candle.
Struggle for existence
A human race.
The only hope
His Divine Grace.
Misled we are
All going astray.
Save us Lord
Our fervent pray.
Wonder Thy ways
To turn our face.
Adore Thy feet
Your Divine Grace.
Forgotten Krishna
We fallen souls,
Paying most heavy
The illusion's toll.
Darkness around
All untrace.
The only hope
His Divine Grace.
Message of service
Thou hast brought.
A healthful life
As Chaitanya wrought.
Unknown to all
It's full of brace.
That's your gift
Your Divine Grace.
Absolute is sentient
Thou hast proved,
Impersonal calamity
Thou hast moved.
This gives us a life
Anew and fresh.
Worship Thy feet
Your Divine Grace.
Had you not come
Who had told
The message of Krishna
Forceful and bold.
That's your right.
You have the mace.
Save me a fallen
Your Divine Grace.
The line of service
As drawn by you
Is pleasing and healthy
Like morning dew.
The oldest of all
But in new dress.
Miracle done
Your Divine Grace.
