Pradyumna: om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Indistinct ... number 19
vayam tu na vitrpyama
uttama-sloka-vikrame yac-chrnvatam rasa-jnanam svadu svadu pade pade [SB 1.1.19] [break] na-not; vitrpyamaḥ shall be at rest; uttama-sloka-the Personality of Godhead, who is glorified by transcendental prayers; vikrame-adventures; yat-which; srnvatam-by continuous hearing; rasajnanam-those who are conversant with humor; svadu-relishing; svadu-palatable; pade pade-in every step.
[02:12]
Translation: "We shall never be in rest even though continuously hearing the transcendental pastimes of the Personality of Godhead, who is glorified by good prayers. Those who have developed the particular humor of transcendental mellow do relish in every step such description of pastimes of the Lord."
Prabhupada: So this is the difference between material and spiritual. Na vitrpyamaḥ. There is no satiation. Just like any material thing... We are chanting Hare Krsna. Now if we are advised to chant "John Mary," go on "John Mary, John Mary," how long it will chant? Hare Krsna: Krsna and Radha; Hare, His energy. Similarly, if somebody says…, they say that "We can chant any name"… The Ramakrishna Mission say like that. Rascaldom. So all right, you chant "John Mary, John Mary, John Mary." How long? It will be not possible. You can chant one hour, two hours then, or one day, two days. But then, no need, hackneyed. You cannot do that. This is practical. You can see. You chant this "John Mary, John Mary." How long you will be able? No. But this Hare Krsna mantra you go on chanting for life, still it will be pleasant. Still it will be pleasant, new. You take so many bunch of papers daily, news. You read it. After one hour, you throw it. And Bhagavad-gita, for the last since five thousand years, everyone is reading. Still going on reading, reading, reading. These are practical. You cannot stop. There may be some rascal commentaries are coming, but they are reading. Nobody says that "We have discussed this book for the last five thousand years. What is the use of discussion? Bring something new." [laughter] Similarly Srimad-Bhagavatam. These are transcendental literatures. And if one also becomes transcendental, purified, then you go on continuously, na vitrpyama. There is no satiation.
Krsna is unlimited, yad uttama-sloka. Vikrame. There is vikrama, His activities, His pastime. That is also unlimited. It is described in the Caitanya-caritamrta that Radha and Krsna, by Krsna's seeing…, by Radharani seeing Krsna's beauty, She immediately becomes more beautiful. And as soon as Krsna sees Radharani has become more beautiful, He becomes more enlivened, enthusiastic. So again, Krsna is more enthusiastic, Radha is more beautiful [laughter]; and as She is more beautiful, He is more enthusiastic. Dui lagi hudahudi: now it is increased. That is spiritual, that it will increase, anandambudhi-vardhanam. Here we have no experience that any sea, this salty seas, they increase. No. They increase little more; again they stop. That is the material sea. But in spiritual atmosphere, the ocean of bliss increases. That is the statement. Whether you are increasingly tasting Krsna consciousness, then we can know that we are making really advance. If you are becoming tiresome, [indistinct] that means you have not yet tasted the spiritual bliss of transcendental holy name. This is the test.
They say, vayam tu na vitrpyama. You can go on, for hundred years, you can go on describing the pastimes of Lord Krsna. We shall never say that "Now we are satisfied." No.
vayam tu na vitrpyama
uttama-sloka-vikrame yac-chrnvatam rasa-jnanam svadu svadu pade pade [SB 1.1.19] [break] Hearing of the transcendental pastimes of Krsna, svadu svadu pade pade, it becomes more tasteful, more tasteful. [break] That is called spiritual. Spiritual is unlimited. So,
brahma-saukhyam tv anantam.
tapo divyam putraka yena sattvam suddhyed yasmad brahma-saukhyam tv anantam [SB 5.5.1] This was the advice given by Rsabhadeva to His sons: "My dear sons, this human form of life,"nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke-nrloke, in the human society, this human form of body-kastan kaman arhate viḍ-bhujam ye, "simply for eating and sleeping and mating and defending, to work so hard like hogs and dogs, this is not good." The modern civilization, they are teaching to work harder and harder. And what is the purpose? Eating, sleeping, mating and defending, that's all. Why one should work so hard? Every city we are going, anywhere-east or west, doesn't matter-people are engaged hard work from morning. In London we have seen, when we go for morning walk, immediately so many men are going to work. This is civilization. In Montreal I have seen. No consideration man or woman; must attend the office or the work hall at certain periods. And in New York I have seen they are coming from the other…, island? What is that?
Devotee: Long Island.
Prabhupada: Eh? Long Island. And crossing that ferry, then again waiting for the bus, and then going to the office. Then similarly work hard there, again come back and going at home at night at ten o'clock. So they might have come out in the morning at four, and return at four. You see? And what is that? Hah? Sense gratification? That is also not very satisfactory. Somebody is drinking wine, having a dog, that's all. This is civilization. Working so hard, he is not even able to satisfy his senses. That is done without any difficulty by the cats and dogs. Without any difficulty. The cats and dogs, they have no difficulty for sex life for eating and sleeping. They have no problem. But we have created. We are advanced, scientifically advanced, civilized human being; we have created difficulty even for the primary necessities of life, eating, sleeping, mating and defending, which is free by nature. It is free to everyone by the laws of nature. You see early in the morning the birds, immediately, "kichit kichit kichit kichit" they go and jump over a tree, and there is, immediately, there is the food, then eat, and they are gone. Where is the problem? Have you seen any cats and dogs or birds and beasts dying for starvation? Have you seen that? But they are created [break] … a civilization that by standing on the road you will be killed, motorcar accident. You cannot go or even walk on so freely. You are after freedom. You are revolution, freedom, chanting, "Freedom! Revolution!" but you cannot walk freely in the street.
So there is no [indistinct]. This is demonic activities. Most condemned life. Most condemned life. This is not civilization. Civilization is that people, they are trying. They are trying. As soon as one becomes rich, he does not work. But he must have engagement. What is that engagement? Nightclub. Nightclub. Whatever money he has accumulated is spoiled there. The real thing is happiness. Now he has earned much money. Now he does not know how to spend money, how to enjoy life. Because the saying, carvita-carvananam. The same sex life in the nightclub, that's all. They have become hippy. They have given up everything, but the fair sex is going on. They cannot give up. That is going on. A little intoxication, that's all. This is not civilization. The civilization is that one should be so advanced in spiritual life that they will sit down in any place, and simply by chanting Hare Krsna they will feel transcendental bliss. Just like Haridasa Thakura. He was chanting three hundred thousand.
So life should be trained up. That is success of life. Nayam deha. This life is not meant for working so hard. Even the cats and dogs, they do not work so hard as we are working, and they have no problem for eating, sleeping, mating. And we are working so hard, and still the problem-so many unemployment, so many frustration, so many confusion, war, fight. So many things. Burglary. People are not satisfied. This is not civilization. This is demonic civilization. They are thinking that "We are advanced." But see just… [break]
So this Naimisaranya, in the forest of Naimisaranya they are proposing that "You go on chanting about Krsna's pastimes. We shall never be…" This is also another thing. Here is anandambudhi-vardhanam. Just like in the material world they are not satisfied; they are working more and more. But there is no ananda, there is no pleasure. Here, just the opposite. Here also they say, "Go on chanting Hare Krsna, go on chanting Krsna's pastimes, but,"svadu svadu pade pade, "but we are getting relish, nice, so nice, so nice, so nice." That is the difference.
yac-chrnvatam rasa-jnanam
svadu svadu pade pade [SB 1.1.19] Now, read on the purport.
Pradyumna: "That is the difference between mundane stories, fiction or history and transcendental pastimes of the Lord. It is for this reason only that the old history of the whole universe is inculcated with reference to the pastimes of the incarnations of Godhead. Ramayana, Mahabharata or the Puranas are histories of the bygone ages recorded in connection with the pastimes of the incarnations of the Lord so that the reading matter would remain ever fresh even by repeated and repeated readings. For example let us take the matter of the Bhagavad-gita or that of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Anyone may go on reading these transcendental books repeatedly for the whole life, and still he will find in them new information, new light of information. Mundane news are static, whereas the transcendental news are dynamic, as much as the spirit is dynamic whereas the matter is static. And those who have developed the humor for understanding the transcendental subject matter shall never become tired of hearing such narrations. One is satiated by mundane activities, and nobody is satiated by transcendental or devotional activities. Uttama-sloka means the literature which is not meant for the nescience. Mundane literatures are tamas, or in the modes of darkness of ignorance…"
Prabhupada: Uttama. This is derivation of Sanskrit word. Ut, just like krsnot, ut. Ut means "surpassing," "transcendental." So uttama. Tama means darkness. This whole universe, material creation, is dark. Therefore there is necessity of sunlight, moonlight, electricity. Because naturally this is just like a sun is little on our back side, immediately darkness, night. Sun is there, but it is simply because it is on my back side, therefore in front side I see darkness. Darkness means absence of sunshine.
So this world is by nature dark, tama, and ignorance. Not only dark but also every one of us ignorant. We do not know what is the value of life. Under the illusion of maya we are working hard day and night. Therefore it is called dark, tama. And Krsna is uttama. He is not of this world. Narayana-para. He is transcendental, para. There is another nature. This nature is dark; that nature is light. That nature is light, because two things are there: light and darkness. So if there is darkness, this world of darkness, there must be one world of light. That is spiritual world. That is spiritual world. Why? It is not dark, because as here in this material world we have got one specimen sample of bright planet: the sun planet. All other planets, they are dark. When they are reflected by the sunshine, then they illuminate, just like the moon. So here we have got one sample. Therefore that Gayatri mantra: om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tat savitur varenyam bhargo…
[break] …of the sun planet, because this is an example of the spiritual world. And in the spiritual world all the planets are illuminated like the sun planet. Therefore there is no need of sunshine. It is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, in the Upanisad, there is no need of sunlight; there is no need of moonlight; there is no need of electricity. Like that.
Now you can think over where is that nature or the sky where there is no need of sunshine? Here there is. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita:
That nature is eternal. This nature is nonpermanent. Bhūtva bhūtva praliyate. As your body, it becomes created at a certain date and it becomes vanished at a certain date, similarly the whole cosmic manifestation. It is created. They say it is not created, these, some of the rascal, scientists. But…
[break] …that this simple [indistinct], that this body is material, my body, your body. It has a date of creation; it has a date of destruction. Similarly anything in this material world, it has a date of creation, it has a date of destruction. Anything. We get experience every day, so how can you say it is going on? No. [break] [end]
