The Science of God
The Science of God
[newspaper headline: "DIVINE GRACE COMES ROLLSING IN"]
Bhagavad-gita Lecture at Melbourne Town Hall, June 27, 1974
[02:16] [Prabhupada:] "Hallowed be Thy name, my Lord Krsna, the Personality of Godhead.
[02:24] Let Your holy name be glorified." This is our movement.
[02:32] It is not a sectarian; it is very scientific movement.
[02:37] Scientific movement because at the present moment, we are all godless,
[02:43 forgotten what is God, and what to speak of His name. They do not believe in God,
[02:50] and what to speak of His name, fame, His place, His activities, His form, His quality.
[02:59] How we can know? There is no educational system about the science of God.
[03:09] This movement, Krsna consciousness movement, is teaching the science of God.
[03:18] God is Absolute. Absolute means there is no difference.
[03:31] Just like, in the relative world... This is relative world.
[03:36] Material world means relative world. Relative world means the son.
[03:43] As soon as I say "the son," there must be a father. As soon as I say "friend,"
[03:53] there must be another man, friend. As soon as I say "water," there must be something as water.
[04:05] But in the absolute world, the name "water" and the water is the same.
[04:12] This is called absolute. No different separation.
[04:19] So in the kingdom of God, the God is God, and His son is also God.
[04:28] So, by chanting Hare Krsna, you are directly in contact with God.
[04:37] This is the meaning of Hare Krsna.
[04:39] We think we are enjoying, but we are suffering, actually.
[04:44] And because we cannot understand what is suffering... Suffering there is.
[04:50] Sometimes you come to understand. But we are accepting this suffering as enjoyment.
[04:59] A man is working very hard, very hard, whole day. This is not enjoyment.
[05:10] You have got a car, but you are running at seventy miles' speed, going to your business,
[05:18] and there you are earning a hundred and thousands of dollars,
[05:22] so you are thinking that you are enjoying. But this labor is suffering you forget.
[05:29] And in order to forget this suffering, then I take to wine, take to this, take to that,
[05:35] to forget this suffering. So actually we are suffering, but we are accepting it as enjoying.
[05:41] This is called illusion.
[05:43] Anyone who is very much sensuous, very much attached to sense gratification, they are called demon.
[05:52] And those persons who do not indulge in sense gratification but utilize
[06:01] this body or this life for God realization, Krsna realization, they're called gods.
[06:11] There are two classes of men: demon and god.
[06:15] Those who are engaged in God consciousness, they are not God, but godly.
[06:22] And those who are not… Because this human life is meant for this purpose.
[06:27] Forgetting our father, forgetting our God,
[06:30] we are criminal within this material world. Therefore, our only business
[06:37] is how to get out of this prison house and go back to home, back to Godhead.
[06:44] God is like you and me, a person. But He's Pacific Ocean; we are drop. That's all. [break]
[06:52] [Madhudvisa:] The question was, "In the Srimad-Bhagavatam," which is a scripture that we study,
[06:56] "it says that Krsna did not want us to come to this material world."
[07:01] The question is, "If Krsna did not want us to come, why are we here?"
[07:07] [Prabhupada:] Yes. You forced Krsna to allow you to come.
[07:13] Just like sometimes a child forces the father. Father says,
[07:19] "My dear son, do not do this. Do not go there." But he insists, "Father, I must go. I must go."
[07:24] "All right, you go, at your risk."
[07:28] That's all. And you suffer. What can be done?
[07:34] Because you are son of God-God has got independence, full independence, almighty-
[07:43] therefore you have acquired the quality of your father. You have got little independence.
[07:50] So God does not interfere with your little independence.
[07:56] Beginning from Lord Brahma down to the worms in the stool, gradually,
[08:04] according to your work, according to your desire, you manufacture your different types of body
[08:10] and enjoy and suffer. That's all.
Lecture at St. Pascal's Franciscan Seminary, Melbourne, June 28, 1974
[09:31] [Prabhupada:] Indriya means senses. We cannot understand what is Krsna, or God, His name,
[09:41] His form, His attributes, His pastimes. We cannot understand by these blunt material senses.
[09:52] Then how it is to be understood? After all, this human life is meant for understanding God.
[09:59] That is the only business of human life.
[10:05] The nature, material nature, gives us this opportunity to have this human form of life.
[10:18] The facility of this life, of this form of life, is given to us just to understand God.
[10:32] Other forms of life-cats and dogs, trees, and so many other things; there are 8,400,000 forms
[10:42] of life-so in other forms of life it is not possible to understand what is God.
[10:53] If we call all the dogs of your country, "Come here, we shall talk about God,"
[11:03] no, there is no possibility of understanding. But in the human form of life,
[11:11] there is possibility. Doesn't matter whether it is in India or America, Australia.
[11:20] Any human being, if he tries, and if he reads the scriptures-never mind Bible,
[11:32] Bhagavad-gita, Bhagavata-then he will understand God.
[11:37] The beginning of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, janmady asya yataḥ: "Absolute Truth is that from whom
[11:48] everything has come into existence." Now, what is the nature of the Absolute Truth?
[11:59] "Everything" means... There are two things: matter and spirit. Two things.
[12:08] Just like this table is matter, and we, living entities, we are spirit, spirit soul.
[12:22] This material body is my covering. Just like dress. Every one of us is dressed,
[12:31] covered by some kind of dress. Similarly, all living beings, they are dressed by the material covering.
[12:44] So we, the spirit soul, part and parcel of God,
[12:50] at the present moment we are covered by two kinds of dress-
[12:56] subtle dress: mind, intelligence, and ego; and the gross covering.
[13:03] Subtle means we know there is this thing, but we cannot see it.
[13:10] Just like you know I have got mind, I know you have got mind,
[13:14] but I don't see your mind, you don't see my mind.
[13:18] I know you have got intelligence, you know I have got intelligence,
[13:22] but we don't see what is that intelligence. Similarly, identification.
[13:30] I am this consciousness. That also, you have got consciousness, I have got consciousness.
[13:38] But we don't see. So things which are not visible to these material eyes, that is called subtle.
[13:49] And spirit soul is still subtler.
[13:57] So, human life is meant for understanding that spirit soul and the Supreme Soul. [break]
[14:07] [Madhudvisa:] In Krsna consciousness, the process is to get beyond the disease of material existence.
[14:15] The first part of his question, "How to do this?" Second part of his question,
[14:20] "What is the end result after taking to this process?"
[14:24] [Prabhupada:] The process is to transfer yourself from material energy to spiritual energy.
[14:39] We are under energy. God has got two energies: material energy and spiritual energy.
[14:49] We are also energy. We are marginal energy. So marginal energy means we can
[14:59] remain under the material energy or on the spiritual energy,
[15:05] as we make our choice. Marginal... Just like on the beach you find sometime on the border
[15:17] of the water, the water is covering the land and sometimes the land is open.
[15:26] This is called marginal position. Similarly, we are marginal energy of God,
[15:35] living entities. So we can remain under the water-means material energy-
[15:43] or we can remain open also, on spiritual energy.
[15:49] [Madhudvisa:] "What is our view of Lord Jesus Christ?"
[15:55] [Prabhupada:] Jesus Christ, Lord Jesus Christ is... He's son of God. The best son of God.
[16:02] So we have all respect for him. Yes.
[16:09] [Madhudvisa:] St. Francis, the founder of this particular order which we have been invited to speak to,
[16:17] found God in the material world, and he used to address the aspects of the material world as
[16:24] "brother" and "sister": "brother tree," "sister water," like that. What is your view upon this?
[16:32] [Prabhupada:] This is the real God consciousness. This is real God consciousness. Yes.
[16:39] Not that I am God conscious, and I kill the animals. That is not God consciousness.
[16:50] To accept the trees, plants, lower animals, insignificant ants even, as brother...
[17:02] Samaḥ sarvesu bhūtesu. This is explained in the Bhagavad-gita:
[17:14] Sama. Sama means equal to all living entities. To see the spirit soul,
[17:21] anyone, it doesn't matter whether he is man or cat or dog or tree or ant or insect or big man.
[17:33] They are all parts and parcel of God. They are simply dressed differently.
[17:40] One has got the dress of tree, one has got the dress of king, one has got insect, one has...
[17:46] That is also explained in the Bhagavad-gita:
[17:52] One who is panḍita, learned, his vision is equal.
[17:58] So if St. Francis was thinking like that, that is higher standard of spiritual understanding.
Morning Walk, Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, 1974
[20:58] [Madhudvisa:] Should we turn back, Prabhupada?
[21:00] [Prabhupada:] Yes.
[21:06] [sound of clapperboard] What is this sound means?
[21:08] [Madhudvisa:] That means "Begin to roll." "Action!" It means action.
[21:14] When they snap that, that's the beginning of the shooting.
[21:23] The boy who was following the cart, in the red, he is making one documentary film all about
[21:29] your stay here in Australia. Then it will be distributed to the government. Actually, this is
[21:36] an independent film. It can be put it into a library, and people can get it for their schools, colleges.
Bhagavad-gita Lecture, Melbourne, June 30, 1974
[21:58] [Prabhupada:] To understand Krsna is very difficult job. Krsna has personally said in the Bhagavad-gita,
[21:57] manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg. 7.3]:
[22:11] "Out of many, many millions of person," not only at this age; in the past also. Manusyanam sahasresu,
[22:20] "Out of many millions of persons," kascid yatati siddhaye, "one is trying to become perfect."
[22:31] Generally, they have no knowledge what is perfection. Perfection they do not know.
[22:40] Perfection means to stop this process of birth, death, old age and disease.
[22:49] That is called perfection. Everyone is trying to be perfect,
[22:53] but they do not know what is perfection.
[22:56] Perfection means this: that when you are free from these four imperfection.
[23:05] What is that? Birth, death, old age and disease.
[23:10] Everyone... Nobody wants to die, but there is forcefully, "You must die." That is imperfection.
[23:17] But these rascals, they do not know. They think that we must die.
[23:23] But no, because you are eternal, you are not meant for death.
[23:30] But nature is forcing you-must die.
Initiation Lecture, Melbourne, July 1, 1974
[24:20] [Prabhupada:] His navel is like lotus flower, His eyes are like lotus flower. His feet, lotus feet.
[24:32] So lotus is the comparison of the beauty of different limbs or parts
[24:41] of the body, transcendental body of Krsna
La Trobe University Lecture, Melbourne, July 1, 1974
[24:47] [Prabhupada:] God is the Supreme Being, full with six kinds of opulences. Therefore, He attracts everyone.
[25:01] This is the definition of the word "Krsna."
[25:06] This Bhagavad-gita is spoken by Krsna, the perfect person.
[25:15] The pains and pleasure, on account of this material body, we have to feel.
[25:22] But if we come to the spiritual platform-that is, understanding of the soul-
[25:30] then in any condition we shall be happy. [break]
[25:35] [Madhudvisa:] Another question? There? Yes, sir?
[25:40] [Guest:] Do you consider your movement the major form of enlightenment emanating from
[25:45] the United States today? What order of priority is your movement in the White House
[25:54] psychological warfare department? Will you also be coming along to our July 4
[26:01] demonstration again this year to try and f**k it up and divert people away from taking
[26:06] up real political issues concerned with Australian government?
[26:09] [Madhudvisa:] If we can answer one at a time. I can answer them for you if you like.
[26:14] Our movement is not coming from the United States.
[26:16] If you have some paranoiac stigma about everything coming from the United States,
[26:24] well that's your hang-up, not mine. Second of all, our spiritual master, he came to the United
[26:35] States to start this Krsna consciousness movement because he got a free ticket
[26:41] on a boat to go there. And because of the mercy of this one lady who gave him the free
[26:47] ticket on the boat, he came to America on the orders of his spiritual master.
[26:53] This is the reason he came to America to start Krsna consciousness.
[26:57] If you had sent him a free ticket, he probably would have come to Australia first.
[27:01] He was a monk. He was a monk, a penniless monk, in India, and he was trying to follow the orders of his spiritual
[27:08] teacher by spreading love of God.
Morning Walk, Melbourne, July 1974
[27:11] [Madhudvisa:] Some people would say that Krsna consciousness is too austere. Too austere. It should be taken in stages.
[27:20] [Prabhupada:] What is your austerity? Eh? You are starving?
[27:28] We say "Don't eat meat." Is that a very great austerity?
[27:33] [Madhudvisa:] No. That is the easiest to give up.
[27:36] [Prabhupada:] Then, no illicit sex. We don't say no sex. Illicit sex. So where is the austerity?
[27:50] [Madhudvisa:] Well, devotees, they must rise early in the morning, take cold bath.
[27:54] [Prabhupada:] That is healthy. Because "Early to rise... Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy and wise."
[28:04] That's fact. What to speak of early rise, practically I don't sleep at night.
[28:17] Only two hours, that's all. Still, I go up in the early in the morning. What is the wrong there? No, I don't sleep in.
Room Conversation, Departure, Melbourne, July 1974
[28:30] [Prabhupada:] So you have got one big danḍa?
[28:33] [Madhudvisa:] Yes. The danḍa.
[28:35] [Prabhupada:] You can take. What is there?
[28:42] [Madhudvisa:] It's your sweater. It is your sweater and hat.
[28:51] [Prabhupada:] So everything is all right? Give them these flowers.
[29:25] [Madhudvisa:] Should I distribute this rasagulla?
[29:27] [Prabhupada:] Yes. We shall go now? [devotees offer obeisances]
