Even though decorated with the signs of a devotee, a person addicted to smoking, drinking or illegitimate sex with women cannot have all the above-mentioned ecstatic symptoms. The whole process can be summarized as follows: the advanced devotee who chants the holy name of the Lord in a perfectly offenseless manner and is friendly to everyone can actually relish the transcendental taste of glorifying the Lord. And the result of such realization is reflected in the cessation of all material desires, etc., as mentioned above. The neophytes, due to their being in the lower stage of devotional service, are invariably envious, so much so that they invent their own ways and means of devotional regulations without following the acaryas. As such, even if they make a show of constantly chanting the holy name of the Lord, they cannot relish the transcendental taste of the holy name. Therefore, the show of tears in the eyes, trembling, perspiration or unconsciousness, etc., are all condemned. They can, however, get into touch with a pure devotee of the Lord and rectify their bad habits; otherwise they shall continue to be stone-hearted and unfit for any treatment. A complete progressive march on the return path home, back to Godhead, will depend on the instructions of the revealed scriptures directed by a realized devotee.
(More...) "Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has very critically discussed all these bhava displays in connection with some unscrupulous neophytes' imitating the above symptoms for cheap appreciation. Not only Visvanatha Cakravarti but also Srila Rūpa Gosvami treated them very critically. Sometimes all the above eight symptoms of ecstasy are imitated by the mundane devotees (prakrta-sahajiyas), but the pseudo symptoms are at once detected when one sees the pseudodevotee addicted to so many forbidden things. A person addicted to smoking, drinking or illegitimate sex with women, even though decorated with the signs of a devotee, cannot have all the above-mentioned ecstatic symptoms. But it is seen that sometimes they are willfully imitated, and for this reason Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti accuses the imitators of being stone-hearted men. They are even affected sometimes by the reflection of such transcendental symptoms, yet if they still do not give up the forbidden habits, then they are hopeless cases for transcendental realization.
(More...) Immediately after his high-sounding meditation, a "meditator" becomes thirsty and wants to smoke or drink. He is under the strong grip of material nature, yet he thinks that he is already free from the clutches of māyā. Since Devahūti is gradually coming to the point of surrender, her questions are very intelligent. How can one be liberated? How can one be in a pure state of spiritual existence as long as he is strongly held by the modes of material nature? This is also an indication to the false meditator. There are many so-called meditators who think, "I am the Supreme Spirit Soul. I am conducting the activities of material nature. Under my direction the sun is moving and the moon is rising." They think that by such contemplation or meditation they can become free, but it is seen that just three minutes after finishing such nonsensical meditation, they are immediately captured by the modes of material nature. Immediately after his high-sounding meditation, a "meditator" becomes thirsty and wants to smoke or drink. He is under the strong grip of material nature, yet he thinks that he is already free from the clutches of maya. This question of Devahūti's is for such a person who falsely claims that he is everything, that ultimately everything is void, and that there are no sinful or pious activities. These are all atheistic inventions. Actually, unless a living entity surrenders unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead as instructed in Bhagavad-gita, there is no liberation or freedom from the clutches of maya.

Imported quote 14028 Without serving Krsna according to the vidhi-marga regulative principles of the Pancaratrika-vidhi, unscrupulous persons want to jump immediately to the raga-marga principles. Such persons are called sahajiya. There are also demons who enjoy depicting Krsna and His pastimes with the gopis, taking advantage of Krsna by their licentious character. These demons who print books and write lyrics on the raga-marga principles are surely on the way to hell. Unfortunately, they lead others down with them. Devotees in Krsna consciousness should be very careful to avoid such demons. One should strictly follow the vidhi-marga regulative principles in the worship of Laksmi-Narayana, although the Lord is present in the temple as Radha-Krsna. Radha-Krsna includes Laksmi-Narayana; therefore when one worships the Lord according to the regulative principles, the Lord accepts the service in the role of Laksmi-Narayana. In Nectar of Devotion full instructions are given about the vidhi-marga worship of Radha-Krsna or Laksmi-Narayana. Although there are sixty-four kinds of offenses one can commit in vidhi-marga worship, in raga-marga worship there is no consideration of such offenses because the devotees on that platform are very much elevated, and there is no question of offense. But if we do not follow the regulative principles on the vidhi-marga platform and keep our eyes trained to spot offenses, we will not make progress.

Imported quote 15162 The prakrta sahajiyas who chant nitai gaura radhe syama have very little knowledge of the Bhagavata conclusion, and they hardly follow the Vaisnava rules and regulations, and yet because they chant bhaja nitai gaura, their chanting immediately invokes tears and other signs of ecstasy. Although they do not know the principles of Vaisnava philosophy and are not very advanced in education, by these symptoms they attract many men to become their followers. Their ecstatic tears will of course help them in the long run, for as soon as they come in contact with a pure devotee their lives will become successful. Even in the beginning, however, because they are chanting the holy names of nitai-gaura, their swift advancement on the path of love of Godhead is very prominently visible.
(More...) Imported quote 15482 Devotional service with attachment is a natural inclination. One who has been attracted by such a natural inclination does not accept any argument against his conviction, even though such arguments are presented according to Scriptural injunction. This natural inclination is also based on injunction, and so a person who has attachment for that particular type of devotional service toward the Supreme Lord is not required to change it simply on the strength of Scriptural argument. In this connection we should note that the class of so-called devotees known as Prakrita-sahajia follow their own concocted ideas and represent themselves as Krishna and Radha, and indulge in debauchery. This kind of devotional service and attachment is false. They are actually gliding down the hellish path. This is not the standard of Ragatmika, or devotion. This Prakrita sahajia community is actually cheated and very unfortunate.
(More...) Imported quote 15624 On the other hand, there are many so-called devotees who think that Vedanta is meant for a particular class of men, and is not meant for the devotees. They do not know that Vedanta is the only plaform of pure devotees. All the great Acharyas of the four Sampradayas of the Vaishnava sect have made their commentaries on the Vedanta Sutra, but the so-called devotee class, who are known as Prakrita Sahajia, carefully avoid the study of Vedanta Sutra. The Prakrita Sahajia misunderstand the pure devotees and Vaishnav Acharyas as being mental speculators or fruitive actors. As a result of such a conclusion, they themselves become Mayavadis, and leave the service of the Supreme Lord.
(More...) Imported quote 15802 There are many pseudo devotional parties claiming to belong to Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's sect. Such pseudo devotional parties in the sect of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, dress themselves up artificially as the damsels of Vraja. This sort of dressing is not approved by advanced spiritualists or advanced students of devotional service. Such dressing of the outward material body is another foolishness of the concept of the body being the soul. They are mistaken in considering that the spiritual body of Krishna and Radharani and their associates, the damsels of Vraja, are of material Nature. One should know perfectly that all such manifestations are expansions of eternal bliss and knowledge in the transcendental world. They have nothing to do with this material body. Therefore, the body, the dress, the decoration, and the activities of the damsels of Vrindaban do not belong to this material cosmic manifestation. Such damsels of Vrindaban are not subject matter for the attraction of persons who are in the material world. They are the transcendental attraction for the All-Attractive. Krishna is All-Attractive-therefore His name is "Krishna." But the damsels of Vrajabhumi, Vrindaban, are attractive even to Krishna. Therefore, they are not anything of this material world.
(More...) If somebody wrongly thinks that this material body is as perfect as the spiritual body, and thus begins to worship by imitating the damsels of Vrindaban, he becomes part and parcel of the Mayavadi or impersonal philosophy. The impersonalists also recommend a process of Aham Grahapasana. This process recommends that one should worship his own body as the Supreme. By this material way of thinking, the pseudo transcendentalists dress themselves as the damsels of Vraja; but they are to be taken as the Aham Grahapasana, and are not acceptable in devotional service.
(More...) Imported quote 18786 Krsna's real identification means ananda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhavitabhiḥ. He is ananda, sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [Bs 5.1], and His expansion of ananda are these gopis, ananda-cinmaya. But that is not this material thing. Ananda-cinmaya-rasa, that mellow, that taste, that humor, that is completely spiritual. We should not misunderstand this lila, or pastimes of Krsna with the gopis, that material lusty affairs. Then we'll be misled. It is said in the Srimad-Bhagavatam that vikriḍitam vraja-vadhūbhir idam ca visnoḥ. The activities of the Vraja-vadhu, the damsels of Vrndavana, vikriḍitam, activities, vikriḍitam vraja-vadhūbhir idam ca visnoḥ sraddhanvito 'nusrnuyad atha varnayed yaḥ, bhaktim param pratilabhya hrd-roga-kama apahinoti [SB 10.33.39].Our material existence is due to our lusty desires in the heart. That is hrd-rogam. That is our heart disease. And we are suffering in this material world for this heart disease life after life. People have lost their intelligence that they cannot understand that there is life after death. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita: tatha dehantara-praptiḥ [Bg 2.13].
(More...) Imported quote 19294 So this is utpata. Srila Rūpa Gosvami has described this kind of so-called devotional attitude is simply disturbance. They imitate. Imitate. Therefore Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has condemned. There are so many apa-sampradaya going on in the name of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's devotee. Who are they? Aula, baula, kartabhaja, neḍa, daravesa, sahi, sahajiya, sakhibheki, smarta, jata-gosani. Then ativaḍi, cūḍadhari, gaurahga-nagari, tota kahe ei tara sahga nahi kori: Tota Babaji, he says, "I do not associate with these classes of men." So after disappearance of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, so many apa-sampradaya sprang up. So we should be very much careful that... Sampradaya means who are carefully following the Vedic principle. Therefore Kaviraja Gosvami, although asserting the truth, he is prepared to give Vedic evidences. Now he has begun.
(More...) Imported quote 20587 Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter dated November 23, 1972, and I have noted the contents carefully. Regarding your four questions, I am replying them one by one. But these things should not be asked until you have first of all asked them to the GBC men. Whatever they say you should accept, but if they cannot satisfy you, then you may ask. But I have answered these questions many times, why you are not learning these things?
(More...) (1) So far your question about the Gopis, in the beginning there is no such question. In the beginning we have to follow the principles of devotional service rigidly, like chanting 16 rounds, regularly following the instructions of the Spiritual Master, which includes study, temple worship, sankirtana, like that. And the more one become perfect at following these principles, the more his relationship with Krishna becomes manifest. Following in the footsteps of Gopis comes in the perfectional stage. First you come to the perfectional stage, then you talk of Gopis. Going to girls and making them pregnant, then talking of Gopis, that is going on, that is nonsense. Without coming to the perfectional stage, if anyone tries to understand the Gopis he becomes a sahajiya. Gopis are not ordinary women, they are all expansions of Krishna's pleasure potency. So when we understand Krishna, then we shall understand Gopis. We can simply follow foot prints of Gopi how they loved Krsna.
(More...) No one should claim his eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa unless he is liberated. Sometimes the behavior of Krsna's sons appears similar to the behavior of His personal servants. For example, the sons used to offer their obeisances, they were silent, submissive and gentle, and they were always ready to carry out Krsna's orders, even at the risk of life. When present before Krsna, they bowed down on the ground. They were very silent and steady, and they used to restrain coughing and laughing before the Lord. Also, they never discussed Krsna's pastimes in conjugal love. In other words, devotees who are engaged in reverential devotional service should not discuss the conjugal love affairs of Krsna. No one should claim his eternal relationship with Krsna unless he is liberated. In the conditioned state of life, the devotees have to execute the prescribed duties as recommended in the codes of devotional service. When one is mature in devotional service and is a realized soul, he can know his own eternal relationship with Krsna. One should not artificially try to establish some relationship. In the premature stage it is sometimes found that a lusty, conditioned person will artificially try to establish some relationship with Krsna in conjugal love. The result of this is that one becomes prakrta-sahajiya, or one who takes everything very cheaply. Although such persons may be very anxious to establish a relationship with Krsna in conjugal love, their conditioned life in the material world is still most abominable. A person who has actually established his relationship with Krsna can no longer act on the material plane, and his personal character cannot be criticized.
