The duty of the king or the head of the government is described very nicely in this verse. It is the duty of the governmental head to see that people strictly follow a religious life. A king should also be strict in chastising the atheists. In other words, an atheistic or godless government should never be supported by a king or governmental chief. That is the test of good government. In the name of secular government, the king or governmental head remains neutral and allows people to engage in all sorts of irreligious activities. In such a state people cannot be happy despite all economic development. However, in this age of Kali there are no pious kings. Instead, rogues and thieves are elected to head the government. But how can the people be happy without religion and God consciousness? The rogues exact taxes from the citizens for their own sense enjoyment, and in the future the people will be so much harassed that according to Srimad-Bhagavatam they will flee from their homes and country and take shelter in the forest. However, in Kali-yuga, democratic government can be captured by Krsna conscious people. If this can be done, the general populace can be made very happy. (More...)

The League of Devotees stands to fight out spiritual ignorance of the intelligent section of people in human society, modern philosophers and religionists. We have no sympathy for the so-called Sadhus or stereotyped ecclesiastical order nor we have any sympathy for the fallen politicians who capture political powers simply by voting strength. Neither we have any special love for any particular country, community, caste or creed. We stand to save all people, all philosophers and all section of religionists in all countries at all times from a dangerous type of Godless civilization. There is no good for patch up treatment without knowing the root cause of the disease. One Postmaster friend asked what is the need of acknowledging or worshipping God if a man is honest, benevolent, good in dealing etc. We replied that a man who does not love God cannot be an honest, good and benevolent man. In the Godless civilization everyone is a diseased fellow. The so-called Sadhus who say that "the world is false and the absolute is truth" and the impractical politicians who say the "absolute God is nowhere and only the matter is all in all" are all fallen in the estimation of the approved spiritual knowledge. As such we think that the politicians are in the same category like the so-called heads of Mathas and Temples because both of them want something in return for self aggrandisement. Every politician is ambitious to become Prime Minister or the President of the state while everyone of the so-called renounced order of Sadhus wants to sit on the throne of Narayana (?) the Lord of the Universe. That is the policy at heart of every Godless creature and all such mentalities are subtle form of material diseases. All such men hanker after something for self aggrandisement in the name of service to God or to the people. And so long this feeling of sense satisfaction will prevail all of them are sure to misuse public fund improperly. How misuse of public fund at the disposal of the state exchequer is being done will be clear from the recent inquiry report to the Union Home Ministry. Everything has been discussed. It will never be possible, sir. If you don't take to Krsna consciousness... This is your wrong idea, that you will be able... Durasaya. Therefore this very word is used, durasaya. Asaya. Asaya means hope. So this is a wrong hope. You cannot. The exact, the same example: If the combined together, all the senses, they pass resolution, "Not to give any food to the stomach, and we shall be easier, not to work so hard"-but that is durasaya. So durasaya ye... Na te viduḥ svartha-gatim hi visnum durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninaḥ [SB 7.5.31]. Then why people are leading in that way, the so many political leaders, social leaders? Nobody speaks of Krsna. They are simply making plan... This party, the Communist Party, is making one plan; the other party is making plan; another party... But the world is suffering. So therefore they have been described in the sastra: andha. Andha means blind, rascal. They do not know. Actually they have no knowledge that without Krsna consciousness the human society can[not] be happy. That is not possible. They do not know this. But by Krsna's grace, by our guru-parampara's grace, we understand, we people who are conducting this Krsna consciousness movement, that without being Krsna conscious, nobody will be happy. Therefore our struggle is different. We are trying to make the people actually happy. Sarve sukhino bhavantu: "Everyone become happy." Otherwise, what is the use of collecting so much money and constructing such big building and inviting them, "Please come here. We have got nice room, and you shall get food without any hard work"? Why we are...? Still, they will not come. Still, they will not come. Now, in this village we have got such a nice building. We invite, "You come here and..." But still, how many are coming? This is the effect of modern civilization. Materialists are very much advanced in enjoying money and women, yet dissatisfaction prevails within human society because human society cannot be happy and peaceful without Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

In spite of achieving the power to control in all directions and in spite of enjoying all types of dear sense gratification as much as possible, Hiranyakasipu was dissatisfied because instead of controlling his senses he remained their servant. (More...)

Atheists can advance materially and create an extremely comfortable situation for the senses, but because they are controlled by the senses, they cannot be satisfied. This is the effect of modern civilization. Materialists are very much advanced in enjoying money and women, yet dissatisfaction prevails within human society because human society cannot be happy and peaceful without Krsna consciousness. As far as material sense gratification is concerned, materialists may go on increasing their enjoyment as far as they can imagine, but because people in such a material condition are servants of their senses, they cannot be satisfied.
