Chanting Hare Krishna

Chanting and glorifying the Lord is the ultimate activity of the living entity.
In the First Canto, 5th Chapter, 22nd verse, of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Narada Muni tells his disciple, Vyasadeva, "My dear Vyasa, you should know that persons who are engaged in executing austerities and penances, studying the Vedas, performing big sacrifices, chanting the hymns of the Vedas, speculating on transcendental knowledge and performing charitable functions have for all their auspicious activities simply to gain a place in the association of devotees and to chant the glories of the Lord." It is indicated here that chanting and glorifying the Lord is the ultimate activity of the living entity.    (More...)
In this age of Kali, the saṅkīrtana-yajna (the chanting of the names of God) is recommended by the Vedic scriptures
The praja-pati is Lord Visnu, and He is the Lord of all living creatures, all worlds, and all beauties, and the protector of everyone. The Lord created this material world for the conditioned souls to learn how to perform yajnas (sacrifice) for the satisfaction of Visnu, so that while in the material world they can live very comfortably without anxiety. Then after finishing the present material body, they can enter into the kingdom of God. That is the whole program for the conditioned soul. By performance of yajna, the conditioned souls gradually become Krsna conscious and become godly in all respects. In this age of Kali, the sahkirtana-yajna (the chanting of the names of God) is recommended by the Vedic scriptures, and this transcendental system was introduced by Lord Caitanya for the deliverance of all men in this age. Sahkirtana-yajna and Krsna consciousness go well together. Lord Krsna in His devotional form (as Lord Caitanya) is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam as follows, with special reference to the sahkirtana-yajna:    (More...)
"In this age of Kali, people who are endowed with sufficient intelligence will worship the Lord, who is accompanied by His associates, by performance of sahkirtana-yajna." (Bhag. 11.5.29) Other yajnas prescribed in the Vedic literatures are not easy to perform in this age of Kali, but the sahkirtana-yajna is easy and sublime for all purposes. [Bg. 9.14]    (More...)
So krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sahgopahgastra-parsadam. To such God the method is to sacrifice. The sacrificing method is yajnaiḥ sahkirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasaḥ. Su-medhasaḥ. Medha means brain substance. Those who have got good brain substance, such person worship this Lord by the yajnaiḥ sahkirtanaiḥ. So that we are doing here. Here is krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam [SB 11.5.32], Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu. Therefore our first obeisance is to Him, then Krsna. This is the process of Krsna consciousness.    (More...)
When a mantra or hymn is chanted softly and slowly, that is called japa. The same mantra, when chanted loudly, is called kīrtana.
When a mantra or hymn is chanted softly and slowly, that is called japa. The same mantra, when chanted loudly, is called kirtana. For example, the maha-mantra (Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare) when uttered very softly only for one's own hearing is called japa. The same mantra, when chanted loudly for being heard by all others, is called kirtana. The maha-mantra can be used for japa and kirtana also. When japa is practiced it is for the personal benefit of the chanter, but when kirtana is performed it is for the benefit of all others who may hear.    (More...)
