process

This is our preaching process, that "Flattering you hundred times, falling down on your feet, I am speaking one thing. Please hear." "What is that?" "Whatever nonsense you have learned, forget." This is our only solicitation, that "You have learned all nonsense. Please forget. Try to hear Caitanya Mahaprabhu and be perfect."    (More...)

The process of meditation recommended herein is bhakti-yoga, or the process of devotional service after being liberated from the material conditions. Jnana-yoga is the process of liberation from the material conditions. After one is liberated from the conditions of material existence, i.e., when one is nivrtta, as previously stated herein, or when one is freed from all material necessities, one becomes qualified to discharge the process of bhakti-yoga. Therefore bhakti-yoga includes jnana-yoga, or, in other words, the process of pure devotional service simultaneously serves the purpose of jnana-yoga; liberation from material conditions is automatically achieved by the gradual development of pure devotional service. These effects of bhakti-yoga are called anartha-nivrtti. Things which are artificially acquired gradually disappear along with the progress of bhakti-yoga. Meditation on the lotus feet of the Personality of Godhead, the first processional step, must show its effect by anartha-nivrtti. The grossest type of anartha which binds the conditioned soul in the material existence is sex desire, and this sex desire gradually develops in the union of the male and female. When the male and female become united, the sex desire is further aggravated by the accumulation of buildings, children, friends, relatives, and wealth. When all these are acquired, the conditioned soul becomes overwhelmed with such entanglements, and the false sense of egoism, or the sense of myself and mine, becomes prominent, and the sex desire expands to various political, social, altruistic, philanthropical, and many other unwanted engagements, which are all like the foam of the sea waves which becomes very prominent at one time and the next moment vanishes as quickly as a cloud in the sky. The conditioned soul is encircled by such products, as well as products of sex desire, and therefore bhakti-yoga leads to gradual evaporation of the sex desire, which is summarized in three headings, namely profit, adoration, and distinction. All conditioned souls are mad after these different forms of sex desires, and one shall see himself how much he has been freed from such material hankerings based primarily on the sex desire. As a person feels his hunger satisfied after eating each morsel of foodstuff, he must similarly be able to see the degree to which he has been freed from sex desire. The sex desire is diminished along with its various forms by the process of bhakti-yoga because bhakti-yoga automatically, by the grace of the Lord, effectively results in knowledge and renunciation, even if the devotee is not materially very well educated. Knowledge means to know things as they are, and if by deliberation it is found that there are things which are at all unnecessary, naturally the person who has acquired knowledge leaves aside such unwanted things. When the conditioned soul finds by culture of knowledge that material necessities are unwanted things, he becomes detached from such unwanted things. This stage of knowledge is called vairagya, or detachment from unwanted things. We have previously discussed that the transcendentalist is required to be self-sufficient and should not beg from the rich blind persons to fulfill the bare necessities of life. Sukadeva Gosvami has suggested some alternatives for the bare necessities of life, namely the problem of eating, sleeping and sheltering, but he has not suggested any alternative for sex satisfaction. One who has the sex desire still with him should not at all try to accept the renounced order of life. For one who has not attained to this stage, there is no question of a renounced order of life. So by gradual process of devotional service under the guidance of a proper spiritual master, and following the principles of the Bhagavatam, one must be able at least to control the gross sex desire before one accepts the renounced order of life factually.    (More...)
Prabhupada: Yes, by touching their leg, "Please read." That is the process.    (More...)
This is the instruction of Prabodhananda Sarasvati. He says that "Taking a straw in my mouth..." That is a Indian system of to become humble. If I approach somebody with a straw in my mouth, that means I have become very humble to him. So he says, dante nidhaya trnakam, "Taking a straw in my teeth," and padayor nipatya, "and falling down on your leg," kaku-satam krtva ca, "hundred times flattering you," aham bravimi, "I want to submit something." Naturally the man will be inclined: "All right, you say it, what you want." So he says, he sadhavaḥ: "You are very nice man, you are very great man, but you kindly forget what you have learned. [laughter] You all nonsense, whatever you have learned, please forget." "Then, what I have to do?" Caitanya-candra-carane kurutanuragam: "Just take shelter of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Your life will be successful." So we shall flatter, we shall hold our hands, we shall fall on the feet and do everything, but we shall, "You nonsense, please forget what you have learned." That is our submission.    (More...)

So when we approach guru, our first condition is that we must be humble and surrender. Pranipata. Prakrsta-rūpena-nipata. Then seva, to serve the spiritual master; yasya prasadad, to gain his favor. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado. This is the process. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu... Sanatana Gosvami's teaching how to approach guru, so, very humbly... Dante trna lana [Cc Madhya 20.98]. In India the system is that to..., symbolic representation of humbleness is to take one piece of grass in the mouth. Then it is to be understood that he is coming very submissively. Now this system is not current, but formerly it was. So Prabodhananda Sarasvati also said like that, dante nidhaya trnakam padayor nipatya krtva caham kaku-satam aham bravimi [Sri Caitanya-candramrta 8.90]. He was a devotee of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and he also taught us how to preach Krsna consciousness, becoming very humble, humbler... Caitanya Mahaprabhu has also instructed us,    (More...)

The meaning is the preaching, very easy. Dante nidhaya trnakam. According to Indian system, if you put a grass on your mouth, it is a sign of that you have become very humble. If you approach a person with a grass in your mouth, he'll immediately know that you are coming there with very, very great humbleness. Therefore dante nidhaya. This was the system. Dante nidhaya trnakam, and touching his feet. Immediately, touch his feet. Immediately, even if he's enemy, he'll be a friend. Even if he's your enemy. It is so nice process. Take a grass on your mouth and immediately fall on his feet, padayor nipetya, and with folded hands, much flattering. Dante nidhaya trnakam padayor nipatya kaku-satam krtva ca. All flattering words. Aham bravimi. So immediately he will agree, "Yes, what you say I'll hear. I'll hear." Immediately, convert to hear you at least.    (More...)

Please accept my greetings and blessing of Lord Bala Krishna. I hope you have already received my letter of the 27th ultimo and I hope to receive your reply very soon. And in continuation of my letter as above-mentioned I beg to inform you that the number of Hiranyakasipus and Ravanas in this Age of Kali increased more than that in other Yugas. Hiranyakasipus are always inimical with the devotees of the Lord even if such devotee happens to be a son. Hiranyakasipu persecuted Prahlada although he was a boy of 5 years old and a beloved son of Hiranyakasipu. As I have already informed you that the American people in general are very much inclined to receive something from Indian culture of spiritual knowledge, they would be a first class recipient for the Bhagavatam culture provided an organized attempt is made for this purpose. The organized method is like this. They should have association of bona fide devotees of the Lord, they should join the Kirtana glorifying the Lord, they should hear the teachings of Srimad-Bhagavatam, they should have intimate touch with the temple or place of the Lord and they should be given ample chance to worship the Lord in the temple. Under the guidance of a bona fide devotee they can be given such facilities and the way of Srimad-Bhagavatam is open for every one. Apart from civilized men like the Americans even the Kirata, Andhra, Pulinda, Pukkasa, Abhira, Sumbha, Yavana, Khasadaya or any other lower caste, all of them can be trained up to be devotees of the Lord under proper guidance of a pure and bona fide devotee. That is the instruction of Sukadeva Goswami imparted to Maharaja Pariksit.    (More...)

Please accept my blessings. I have received your letter dated January 12, and have studied the contents.
I am very pleased with your activities there and advise you to go on with kirtana. You say there is a small community there taking part in kirtana and prasadam distribution, so try to increase it as far as possible, according to time and place in the situation you find in Singapore.
You lament that you are not qualified to present Krsna Consciousness properly, but this is the qualification: hold kirtanas with your friends, read passages from my books, distribute prasadam and try to get more people to read the books. That you are already doing. You don't need to establish a temple, but gradually get funds and organize. Hope this meets you in good health.
Your ever well-wisher,
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Just like in our country, perhaps you know, there was a poet, Rabindranath Tagore. He got many distinction from the Oxford University. He got... He never went to a school, but he got the title "doctor," "Dr. Rabindranath Tagore." And if you think that "I shall also get doctorate without going to a school," that is foolishness. That is special. Similarly, don't try to imitate. Follow the general course, sadhana-siddhi. The regulative principles you must follow as instructed in the sastra. Therefore there are so many sastras. And guru is guide. We must always... Even if you are nitya-siddha or krpa-siddha, you should not neglect the general regulative principle. That is very dangerous. Don't try to do that. We must follow. Nitya... Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself, God, but He is accepting guru. Who is His guru? He is guru of everyone, but He has also accepted Īsvara Puri as His guru. Krsna Himself, He accepted His guru, Sandipani Muni, teaching us that without guru you cannot make any advance. Adau gurvasrayam. The first business is to accept guru. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [Munḍaka Upanisad 1.2.12].    (More...)
Prabhupada: Ah. Advanced in knowledge, who can teach other people nicely. And they can guide. There must be. That brahmana means spiritual guidance, ksatriya means material guidance. So these things are necessity. But where are those brahmanas and ksatriyas? They are training everyone sūdra. Work hard like hogs and dogs and fill up your hungry belly. That's all. This is the modern civilization. [break] ...Kali-yuga's symptoms: daksyam udaram bharitaḥ. One man is supposed to be very expert who has learned how to fill up his belly. That's all. No other knowledge is required. Whether you have sumptuously put foodstuff within your belly. And then it is... You are very expert person. [break] ...sahkirtanaiḥ prayair yajanti hi sumedhasaḥ [SB 11.5.32]. That is mentioned in the sastra, that those who have got good brain, in this age they will perform this yajna. Yajnaiḥ sahkirtanaiḥ prayair yajanti hi sumedhasaḥ. Sumedhasaḥ. Others, they will bother with so many things, but this yajna should be introduced, and people should be engaged in performing this yajna. Then everything will be all right.    (More...)
Prabhupada: Yes. Humble approach for giving a slap, [chuckles] that "You forget everything, what you have learned." First of all, this is the first condition. He sadhavaḥ sakalam eva vihaya dūrad caitanya-candra-carane kurutanuragam.    (More...)
