hard work

So money also, we see, why we want money. Diva carthehaya rajan kutumba-bharanena va. Nidraya hriyate naktam vyavayena ca va vayaḥ [SB 2.1.3]. The materialistic persons are engaged whole day and night. The business is... What is their business? That at night to have very sound sleep: "Last night I had very sound sleep." That is enjoyment. If I can sleep up to ten o'clock, twelve o'clock, "Oh, I have enjoyed this." The sleeping. So at night the enjoyment is sleeping and sex, vyavayena. Vyavayena means sex. In this way, night we are wasting. And daytime? Diva ca artha iha... "Where is money? Where is money? Where is money?" And then as soon as we get money, then how to spend it for sense gratification, for kutumba-bharana, for family maintenance, for purchasing, for shopping. In this way we are very busy. We do not know that there is another business beyond this. This is, especially at the present moment, this is human civilization. They are always busy in sense gratification and getting money for that purpose. That's all. So that is not siddhi. Therefore Krsna said that mostly, 99.9%, they are busy in these things: "How to get money for sense gratification? And when we get money, then spend it for sense gratification." Diva carthehaya. That is not siddhi. That thing is going on amongst the hogs. Hogs are also busy in that way. Then where is the difference between human life and hog life?    (More...)
Therefore sastra says, nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhate viḍ-bhujam ye [SB 5.5.1]. This was the instruction given by King Rsabhadeva, whose son's name was Maharaja Bharata, under whose name this land, this planet is called Bharata-varsa. This planet's original name is Bharata-varsa. Now it has come to India, gradually cut down, cut down. So He instructed His sons, "My dear sons, don't spoil your life simply working hard for sense gratification like the hogs. Because the hog is also working day and night, but what is the aim? The aim is sense gratification. At night sleep or have sex life, and at daytime collect money and spend it for family maintenance or some sense gratification. This is not meant for human life."    (More...)
So our Krsna consciousness movement is teaching people that "You have no other business than to work for Krsna. That's all." This is Krsna business. This is called Krsna consciousness business. That is called the highest perfection. Samsiddhim paramam gataḥ. Siddhi. Here it is, siddhi. Manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg 7.3]. Siddhaye means to understand, "What is my position? Why I am working so hard day and night for simply for sense gratification, for satisfying the tongue, to fulfill the belly and satisfy the genital? This is my business. That is being done by the dogs and hog." When one comes to this sense, that "Shall I work like the cats, dogs and hogs, or I have got any other business?" that is human life. Therefore Krsna says, manusyanam sahasresu. All of them working like hogs and dogs. They do not know there is something other. This is the position. And the modern civilization means keep him in the darkness, that "Let him work hard like hogs and dogs, and don't give him any knowledge." Neither they know, the so-called leaders, what is the perfection. They think, "This is life: work like hog and dog, and then die like hog and dog, finish all business." This is not human life. Therefore Krsna says, manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg 7.3]. They do not know what is perfection of life. Therefore we sometimes... We do not say. Krsna says. And if we repeat Krsna's words, the rascals, they become angry. Actually they are rascals. We plainly say. Because he does not know. If I ask him, "What is your next life?" he cannot answer. Then what is the difference? If I ask the dog that "What is your next life?" he cannot say. "Gow! Gow!" That's all. So if I ask any human being that "What is your next life?" "I don't bother about that thing." [laughter] The same answer, "Gow! Gow!" That's all.    (More...)

Prabhupada: Yes. Visnu-saktiḥ para prokta [Cc Madhya 6.154]. In the Visnu Purana it is said that visnu-saktiḥ para prokta. Para means spiritual. Ksetrajnakhya tatha para. And ksetrajna means the living entity. That is also para, spiritual. Avidya-karma-samjna anya trtiya saktir isyate. Avidya-karma-samjna anya: "Another sakti is there, means this material energy. It is full of avidya." Avidya-karma-samjna. And here karma is very prominent. Everyone is trying work, trying to work very hard to get some profit out of it just to become happy. So in the modern civilization especially, they are being trained up to work very hard and..., to get strength, eat meat, and to digest meat, drink wine, and then become infuriated and work very hard. This is the modern type of civilization. But Vedic civilization is different. Vedic civilization is not meant for working so hard. The human being should be very peaceful and sober and intelligent, and cultivate spiritual knowledge, become brahmana, brahminical culture. Satyam saucam samo damas titiksa [Bg 18.42]. This is Vedic culture.    (More...)
So Vedic culture, or the representative of Vedic culture, Maharaja..., King Rsabhadeva, He advised His sons, "My dear sons, this human life, human form of life, is not meant for working hard like the animal. This is not." Nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhate viḍ-bhujam ye [SB 5.5.1]. Kastan kaman. Kaman means we require some necessities of life, but civilization should not be made in such a way that one has to live at the cost of sacrificing everything. This is not human civilization. Kastan kaman. Everyone wants something. That is required. So long the body is there, we must have to eat, we must have to sleep, we require sense gratification and protection, or security. This is required. But the Vedic civilization was very simplified. Simplified. A class of ideal men, the brahmana-they are ideal-they are simply assimilating the Vedic knowledge and guiding others-ksatriya, vaisya, sūdra-how to live peacefully. The ksatriya, they are meant for giving protection to the people, security. And the vaisya is meant for producing food. And sūdra, because they cannot do anything independently, they must serve these three masters: brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya. So this is very scientific.    (More...)

Narada Muni advises, through Srimad-Bhagavatam, says, that "You, you have got this human form of life. Now you have no necessity for finding out where is your food, where is your shelter, where is your sex satisfaction, where is your defense. This is not your problem. You should try for that thing, means the thing which will give you relief from these material necessities of life." That is the advice. We are mistaken. We are... In this morning walk we saw that such a big nation, but the problem is food problem. Early in the morning at six o'clock, they are going to work. They are going to work. Why? Now, for finding out the necessities of life.    (More...)

The three divisions of God's energies. One energy is His spiritual energy; another energy-these living entities, they are also spiritual-another energy, material energy, where there is ignorance and work. That is material energy. In the material energy everyone is ignorant and they have to work. Karma. Karma means working. Avidya-karma-samjnanya trtiya. So here you have to work. Without working, you cannot get your... The things are ready, but you will have to work. So they have increased the working capability. That is civilization. Just like in the prison house you have to work. Eh? So they think this working is civilization. This is avidya. So therefore they have created more work. From early morning, five o'clock, till ten o'clock, simply working. They do not know that "This working is our punishment." But because ignorant, they think that "Working is life." This is called ignorance. He does not know, "This working is my punishment. How to get out of this work?" No. To increase the work more, complicate, that is civilization. This is called avidya. Avidya-karma-samjnanya. Our tendency is not to work but get things. Therefore he has asked that question. Because he has to get cloth by working, therefore he asking, "Why God has not created?" That means tendency is not to work. That is spiritual tendency. Everything, necessities, automatically available. That is our... Therefore as soon as one man becomes rich, he does not work. He gets his thing by working others. The tendency is there, to retire from work. They go to a solitary place. They retire. They do not work. Weekly, at least, they want to stop worker, working.    (More...)
