So this is the illusion. Therefore sastra says, ato grha-ksetra-sutapta-vittair janasya moho 'yam. Janasya moho 'yam aham mameti [SB 5.5.8]. How a man becomes entangled in this material world, everything is described in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Pumsaḥ striya mithuni-bhavam etam. This material world means sex attraction, mithuni-bhava. The man is searching after woman; woman is searching after man. This is material life-in human life, in bird's, beast's... Just these sparrows-they are trying to make some nest on this chandelier to enjoy sex and lay eggs. Therefore they require some place. The basic principle is sex. First of all sex life, then other necessities. First of all, seeing, man and woman. Then, when they unite, pumsaḥ striya mithuni-bhavam etam tayor mitho hrdaya-granthim ahuḥ [SB 5.5.8]. When they unite and they get children, then the hard knot of heart-"She is my wife. She's [He's] my husband. We cannot separated..." Hard knot. Hrdaya-granthi. Already there is attraction. Now this attraction becomes more and more tight after unity. Then we require a place to live together, "Home, sweet home." Yes, very sweet. [chuckles] The whole day and night, work. And this is moha. He is working hard day and night. There is not a single's moment leisure, and still, he's: "Sweet home." This is illusion.    (More...)
Pusta Krsna: This Krsna consciousness is a spiritual culture, and basically speaking the human society begins from dharma, or accepting the principle of God. Dharma begins with this acceptance of the principle of God, that human beings, their activities, have to be regulated. Just like in human society there is marriage. This is according to scripture. Every scripture regulates there must be marriage. This is dharma. It regulates certain activities that should be done, certain activities that should not be done. And basically speaking this is the beginning of human civilization; otherwise, we're simply living in a civilization of gross sense gratification which is in reality no different or no better than the society of animals. So from dharma, human society begins, and generally... You can see practically that dharma generally focuses... People are taking that dharma is for the basis of economic development. This is proven practically because in pioneer times in America, for example, people, they were simply going to churches and synagogues and temples and all kinds of things, what have you, and economic development was going on very nicely. In fact, economic development could not have gone on unless there was this principle of religion. People were very, practically speaking... In a pioneer situation people are very barbaric, struggle for existence-you know, you're in the country, there is no road, there's no cities-everyone is very..., simply interested to maintain themselves. But by churches and things of this nature, people saw the need for a civilized give-and-take way of living-economic development. Then gradually the ideas developed further and further. But in modern days we can see that people are having economic development and there's no need for God. They think, at least. In other words, people are no longer attending churches, synagogues, things of this nature, because they are making sufficient money without the need of religion. Therefore the basic principle is being missed, that human life is not simply meant for economic development. Human life-we analyze, we can say that...    (More...)

Prabhupada: Madana-mohana. Madana-mohana... Madana means sex attraction. Madana, sex attraction, Cupid, and Krsna is called Madana-mohana. One can, I mean, neglect even sex attraction if one is attracted to Krsna. That is the test. Madana [is] attracting in this material world. Everyone is attracted by sex life. The whole material world is existing on sex life. This is the fact. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-suhkham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. Here, the happiness, the so-called happiness is maithuna, maithunadi. Maithunadi means here happiness begins from maithuna, sex intercourse.    (More...)
Generally, people..., a man marries. The purpose is to satisfy sex desire. Then he begets children. Then again, when the children are grown up, they..., the daughter is married with another boy and the boy is married with another daughter, another girl. That is also the same purpose: sex. Then again, grandchildren. In this way, this material happiness-sriyaisvarya-prajepsavaḥ. The other day we discussed, sri means beauty, aisvarya means wealth and praja means generation.    (More...)

This material life is sammoha, aham mameti. Atha... The material life begins: pumsaḥ striya mithuni-bhavam etat [SB 5.5.8]. This material life is described in four lines. What is this material life? Now, pumsaḥ striya mithuni-bhavam etam. Etat, this material life, is nothing but an attraction of sex. Pumsam striya. The man is after woman, and woman is after man. This is material life, beginning. Everywhere, not only human society. Even in bird society, dog society, cat society or demigods' society-everywhere you'll see the sex attraction. Pumsaḥ striya mithuni-bhavam etam tayor mitho hrdaya-granthim ahuḥ. And... They are seeking, and as soon as they are joined together to satisfy the sex desire, their the, I mean to say, attraction becomes more and more tight. Then ato grha-ksetra-sutapta-vittair janasya moho 'yam aham mameti [SB 5.5.8]. So as soon as they are combined, they require one house or apartment or cottage or nest. Something must be private. Ataḥ grha-ksetra. Then to work, to earn livelihood, one must have some land. Either you construct skyscraper building or till it for get some food grain. Ataḥ grha-ksetra, suta. Then without children, married life is frustrated. Putra-hinam grham sūnyam. Married life without children is void. Vidya hinam jivanam sūnyam. If one is not educated, his life is vacate, or vacant. Vidya hinam jivanam sūnyam disaḥ sūnya deva abandhavaḥ. And if you go to some foreign country, if there is no deva, temple, God's temple, or friend, that is also useless. And putra-hinam grham sūnyam. And if you have no children, the so-called married life is also void. And sarva-sūnya daridrata. And if you are poor, in poverty, then everything is zero. Even if you have got a wife, or even if you have got education, even you have got friend, everything is... That is Canakya Panḍita's advice.    (More...)

Just like here we are having Bhagavata class. This is not ordinary Bhagavata class, not jumping over Krsna's rasa-lila. It is not like that. It is step by step studying what is Krsna, what is this material world, what is the sambandha, or relationship with Krsna-so many things-how this body has developed, how we have forgotten Krsna, how to revive our Krsna consciousness. These things must be studied first of all. Then we can understand what is Krsna's pastimes with the gopis. But these professional Bhagavata preachers, they go, jump over at once. Because it appears like the dealings of young boys and girls, so that is the... Here in this material world, sex impulse... Here in this material world, sex impulse is the center of all activity. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham kanḍūyanena karayor iva duḥkha-duḥkham [SB 7.9.45]. People are working so hard day and night. What is their happiness? The happiness is sex, that's all. That has been described as tuccham, most abominable. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham. Ataḥ grha-ksetra-sutapta-vittair janasya moho 'yam aham mameti [SB 5.5.8].    (More...)

So this material world means that maithunadi. Maithuna means sex intercourse. That is the beginning of material life. You know very well how strong is sex desires in the Western countries. Even old man going to die, he has also. Although he cannot enjoy sex, still, he is trying his best by medicine, by other means, by intoxication, by stimulant. So that is the only happiness of this material world.    (More...)
The human civilization means to create the population dhira, not to be disturbed by sex impulse. This is human civilization. Not that so many so-called sadhus and... They are now preaching openly the yoga by sex. Yoga by sex. They have invented. Yoga means to find out the Supreme Lord within one's self, within the core of the heart. That is real yoga. Yoga means to connect. To connect with whom? With sex life? No. The sex life connection is there even in the birds, beast, ants, animals, worms-everywhere-because the whole world is going on on sex life. Does it require any yoga system? But people are fallen so down that they have invented, because people want it, and these rascals, they exploit. This is going on.    (More...)
The deluding energy or the material nature can act upon the living beings proportionately in terms of the living being's falling prey to the deluding attraction of Maya. The deluding attraction of Maya is displayed more appropriately in terms of brightness of light and the falling of the ants. The ants are captivated by the glaring brightness of light and thus become a prey to the fire. Similarly the deluding energy is always captivating the conditioned souls to become a prey to the fire of delusion and the Vedic scriptures warn the conditioned souls not to become a prey to the delusion but to get rid of it. The Vedas warn us not to go to the darkness of ignorance but go ahead on the progressive path of light. The Lord Himself also warns that the deluding power of material energy is too powerful to be overcome but one who completely surrenders unto the Lord can easily do so. But to surrender unto the lotus feet of the Lord is also not very easy. Such surrender is possible by persons who have had cultured transcendental knowledge on the principles of austerity cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness. These four priciples of advanced civilization were remarkable features in the age of Satya. In that age every human being was practically qualified Brahmin of the highest order and from the angle of social orders of life they were all Paramahansas or the topmen of the renounced order of life. By cultural standing, the human beings were not at all subjected to become prey to deluding energy. Such strong men of character were competent enough to get away from the clutches of Maya. But gradually as the basic principles of Brahminical culture namely austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness became curtailed by proportionate development of pride, too much attachment for women and intoxicating habit, of the people in general it became prominent that the path of salvation or the path of transcendental bliss became far and far away from the human society. With the increase of the Age of Kali people are becoming too much proud, too much attached to woman and too much victims of intoxicating habit. By the influence of the Age of Kali even a pauper is proud of his penny, the woman as a class is always dressed in an over attractive fashion for victimising the mind of man and the man is too much addicted to intoxicating habit in the matter of drinking wine, smoking, drinking tea and chewing pan etc. All these habits or so called advancement of civilization is the root cause of all irreligiosities and, therefore, it is not possible to check corruption, bribery and nepotism as are desired by the leaders to be rooted out. You cannot check all these evils of society simply by statutory acts of police vigilance but you have to cure the disease of mind by the proper medicine namely advocating the principles of Brahminical culture or the principles of austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness. Modern civilization of economic development, is creating a new situation of poverty and scarcity with the result of blackmailing the consumers commodities and if the leaders and the rich men of the society spend fifty percent of their accumulated wealth mercifully for the misled mass of people and educate them in the matter of God-consciousness or in the knowledge of Bhagwatam certainly the age will be defeated in its attempt to entrap the conditioned soul to become the victim of the Age of Kali. We must always remember that false pride or too much estimation of one's own values of life, undue attachment for woman or association with them and intoxicating habit of all major or description, will criple the human civilization from the path of factual peace however the people may go on clamouring for such peace of the world. The preaching of Bhagwatam principles will automatically render all men practised to austerity, become clean both inside and outside, merciful to the suffering men and truthful in daily behaviour. That is the way of correcting the flaws of human society very prominently exhibited at the present moment.    (More...)

Na saucam napi cacaro na satyam tesu vidyate. This is a verse from the Sixteenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita, where the Lord is describing the symptoms of the demons. This pravrttim ca nivrttim ca... Pravrtti means inclination, inclined. And nivrtti means disinclined. So there are two things within this material world. Our inclination is to enjoy the senses. This is general. Everyone within this material world, even the animals, birds, beasts, human being or more elevated than the human beings-the demigods, kinnaras, or the..., many other higher types of living entities... There are different grades of living entities, 8,400,000 different bodies. So what is their pravrtti, inclination? The inclination is attraction of man and woman. This is the central point of attraction. Pumsam striyaḥ maithuni-bhavam etad: the whole material world is existing on this point-sex, man and woman. So this is pravrtti-marga. And nivrtti-marga: just to stop it. This is called nivrtti-marga.    (More...)
