Imported quote 15987 Vasudeva Datta, the brother of Mukunda Datta, was also a resident of Cattagrama. In the Caitanya-bhagavata it is said, yahra sthane krsna haya apane vikraya: Vasudeva Datta was such a powerful devotee that Krsna was purchased by him. Vasudeva Datta stayed at Srivasa Panḍita's house, and in Caitanya-bhagavata it is described that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was so pleased with Vasudeva Datta and so affectionate toward him that He used to say, "I am only Vasudeva Datta's man. My body is only meant to please Vasudeva Datta, and he can sell Me anywhere." Thrice He vowed that this was a fact and that no one should disbelieve these statements. "All My dear devotees," He said, "I tell you the truth. My body is especially meant for Vasudeva Datta." Vasudeva Datta initiated Sri Yadunandana Acarya, the spiritual master of Raghunatha dasa, who later became Raghunatha dasa Gosvami. This will be found in the Antya-lila, Sixth Chapter, verse 161. Vasudeva Datta spent money very liberally; therefore Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked Sivananda Sen to become his sarakhela, or secretary, in order to control his extravagant expenses. Vasudeva Datta was so kind to the living entities that he wanted to take all their sinful reactions so that they might be delivered by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is described in the Fifteenth Chapter of Adi-lila, verses 159 through 180.
(More...) The essence of spiritual knowledge is found in the pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, which are identical with the pastimes of Lord Krsna. This is the essence of knowledge. If knowledge does not include the understanding of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Krsna, it is simply superfluous. By Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's grace, the nectar of Lord Sri Krsna's pastimes is flowing in different directions in hundreds and thousands of rivers. One should not think that the pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu are different from Krsna's pastimes. It is said: sri-krsna-caitanya, radha-krsna nahe anya. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is a combination of Radha-Krsna, and without understanding His pastimes, one cannot understand Radha and Krsna. Srila Narottama dasa Thakura therefore sings: rūpa-raghunatha-pade haibe akuti/ kabe hama bujhaba se yugala piriti. "When shall I become very eager to study the books left by the six Gosvamis? Then I shall be able to understand the conjugal pastimes of Radha and Krsna." Caitanya Mahaprabhu directly empowered Srila Rūpa Gosvami and Srila Sanatana Gosvami. Following in their footsteps, the other six Gosvamis understood Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His mission. One should understand Sri Krsna Caitanya and Lord Sri Krsna from the Gosvamis in the parampara system. This Krsna consciousness movement is following as strictly as possible in the footsteps of the Gosvamis. Narottama dasa Thakura says, ei chaya gosani yahra, mui tahra dasa: "I am the servant of the six Gosvamis." The philosophy of Krsna consciousness is to become the servant of the servant of the servant of the Lord. Whoever wants to understand the difficult subject matter of krsna-katha should accept the disciplic succession. If one is somehow or other able to understand Krsna, his life will be successful. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti so 'rjuna. A perfect devotee is able to understand Krsna through the disciplic succession, and his entrance into the kingdom of God is thereby certainly opened. When one understands Krsna, there is no difficulty in transferring oneself to the spiritual kingdom.
(More...) Meanwhile, Srila Rūpa Gosvami reached Bengal, after returning from Vrndavana. Although he could not follow the Bengali devotees, after some time he then came to Jagannatha Puri, where he stayed with Haridasa Thakura. Srila Rūpa Gosvami composed an important verse, beginning with the words priyaḥ so 'yam, and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu relished it very much. One day when Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramananda Raya and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya went to see Haridasa Thakura, the Lord saw the verse Rūpa Gosvami had composed as an introduction to his books Lalita-madhava and Vidagdha-madhava. After examining the manuscripts of these two books, Ramananda Raya approved and appreciated them very much. After the period of Caturmasya, all the devotees who had come from Bengal returned to their homes. Srila Rūpa Gosvami, however, remained at Jagannatha Puri for some time.
(More...) So to encourage Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, one day Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to his room. "Raghunatha? I heard that you are eating very nice foodstuff and you are not inviting Me?" So he was not replying. So He was finding out where he has kept that rice, and He took and immediately began to eat. "Sir, You do not eat. This is not fit for You." "Oh! It is Jagannatha's prasada! How do you say it is not fit?" Just to encourage him. He may not think that "I am eating this rejected," you see?
(More...) On Janmastami day I offered him sannyasa. So, many devotees came to see in the temple. So there was a big crowd. He was looking very nice. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was also very fair-complexioned. So with this dress, persons with fair complexion looks very nice, very attractive.
(More...) To understand Krsna is not easy job. But Krsna in the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu is so compassionate, not only He's giving Himself, Krsna, but He's giving krsna-prema, love of Krsna. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's avatara. Daya. Maha-vadanyavatara. So whatever Krsna consciousness movement is going forward, it is due to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's magnanimous compassion for the poor people suffering in this Kali-yuga. Otherwise, to become Krsna conscious is not very easy job. Is not easy job. So those who are getting the chance of becoming Krsna conscious by the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they should not lose the opportunity. It will be suicidal. Don't fall down. It is very easy. Simply chanting by Hare Krsna mantra-not always, twenty-four hours, although Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommends, kirtaniyaḥ sada hariḥ , always chant; that is the principle. But we cannot do that because we are so much overwhelmed by the influence of Kali. So at least sixteen rounds. Don't miss this. Don't miss this. What is the difficulty, sixteen rounds? Utmost it will take two hours. You have got twenty-four hours. You want to sleep; all right, sleep, ten hours sleep. That is not recommended. Don't sleep more than six hours. But they want to sleep. They want to sleep twenty-four hours. That is their desire in Kali-yuga. But no. Then you'll be wasting time. Minimize eating, sleeping, mating and defending. When it is nil, that is perfection. Because these are bodily necessities. Eating, sleeping, mating, defending, that is bodily necessities. But I am not this body. Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram... [Bg 2.13].
(More...) Then after few days Caitanya Mahaprabhu inquired from Svarūpa Damodara, "Oh, nowadays I don't find Raghunatha standing there. What he is doing?" Svarūpa Damodara replied that "Raghunatha has given up that business standing on this. He thought that it is standing like prostitute. 'No, I don't want.' " Then, "How he's eating?" "No, he is..., collects some rice which is washed away from the kitchen, and he eats that." Raghunatha dasa Gosvami was doing that. Caitanya Mahaprabhu one day went to his place and He was searching, just He was encouraging, He was searching. He saw that a small pot some rice is kept. So, "Raghunatha, what is this?" He began to eat, "Oh, is very nice. You eat such nice things, you do not invite us?" [laughter] Raghunatha dasa Gosvami said, "It is not for You. Don't take it, don't..." "No, no, it is very nice!" In this way Raghunatha dasa Gosvami increased, and later on, when after departure of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, when he went to live in Vrndavana with the six Gosvamis-he is also one of the Gosvamis-he was taking three times bathing, but not eating. Every alternate days, he will take a little buttermilk. That's all. This is called tapasya, austerity-coming to the point of nil, no more eating. No more sleeping, no more sex life, no more defense. This is perfection. Who will accept this? [laughter]
(More...) But this Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, he was also very rich man's son. At that time his father's income was twelve lakhs of rupees, five hundred years ago. So twelve lakhs of rupees means..., money value has gone down by hundred times. Because money's value is what you can get in exchange. If you get in exchange of one dollar, say, a few pounds of valuable things, that is money value. And if it reduces, if you get only one pound instead of getting twenty pounds, that means money value has reduced.
(More...) Tamala Krsna: ...been seeing this one person there by the name of Bhagavan Shringari Das, Bhagavan Shringari. He's the pūjari of Lord Jagannatha. So he's claiming that when anyone goes to a holy place like Jagannatha Puri that they have to get initiated by a tirtha-guru. So these foolish disciples, they're going and they're accepting initiation from him, and he gives them some mantra, and then he... Naturally there's an exchange of money. They have to promise to send money regularly for Lord... He says it's for Lord Jagannatha. Obviously Lord Jagannatha will never see the money. He also gets them to write a letter. And one of the letters reads something like that "I came to India blind, but now Bhagavan Shringari Das has opened my eyes." Doesn't even mention Your Divine Grace. And this boy, he was telling me this... When he asked about the holy places... This devotee, who-he's doing a little assistance to me-he refused to have anything..., take any initiation 'cause he said that he could understand that something was wrong. He asked him, "What about Mayapur?" He said, "Oh, Mayapur is nothing. That is not the dhama." Then he said, "Dhama means...," and he named the four dhamas. So in this way some of the devotees are... Apparently they're even going back to America and they're encouraging others to send money to this cheater. This man is a big cheater. Govinda dasi, she took this initiation, and some other people, he mentioned... When he was there, there were already four devotees there, some householder devotee from Los Angeles, Govinda dasi,... He sells them things like the flag from the top of the temple for a hundred rupees. You know, different types of thing he sells them. So I said, "So why didn't you ask him, 'Now that we're your disciple and you're our guru, now take us into the temple'?"
(More...) Here in London the activities are going on. The place where I am now staying is a very big garden house, and the place allotted to us is a super-excellent temple site. The only difficulty is it is far away from the city, so the city people cannot conveniently come here. The temple in the city is not finished being constructed yet, neither is there sufficient space. It can be used as office and residence, but as a temple, it has no sufficient space. So things here are not yet very smooth, although the movement is accepted by the people in general as nice. The Hare Krishna record is selling very nicely. Yesterday, it sold 5,000 copies, and this week it is on the chronological list as #20. They say next week it will come to be #3, and after that it may come to #1. So they are very much hopeful of this record. Mr. George Harrison appears to be very intelligent boy, and he is by the Grace of Krishna fortunate also. On the first day, he came to see me along with John Lennon, and we had talks about 2 hours. He wanted to talk with me more, but he is now gone to his sick mother in Liverpool. So if this boy cooperates with our movement, it will be very nice impetus, for after all, he is monied man. These monied men and women have to be very cautiously dealt within spiritual life. We have to sometimes deal with them on account of preaching work; otherwise Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu has strictly restricted to mix with them for the Krishna Conscious people. But we get instruction from Rupa Goswami that whatever opportunity is favorable for pushing on Krishna Consciousness we should accept.
(More...) Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your dated December 11, 1972, and I have noted the contents with care. Regarding your proposal to cash my bonds and take that house in New York, I have heard from Bali Mardan that the bid was refused and that he has made another bid, but it will be some time before it is decided. And Dhananjaya has telephoned to Bombay to request for keeping that down payment, because George is very keen to purchase one monastery and there is every chance they will get it before one week. At least let us see. So there is no immediate need to cash my bonds, nor take the money from London. Jayatirtha has informed that Bali Mardan has saved more than $100,000 in few months time only, so New York is very rich place for collecting, so why not he shall collect there for few more months to raise the whole price? Also, that place on 77th Street is not so much important as 5th Avenue and 40th Street. If we are taking such big place for big risk, why not in the important business district?
(More...) I thank you very much for your kindly remembering me. Sometimes I wish to take Jagannatha prasada, because nowadays I have no appetite here. I went to Jagannatha Puri in 1958 during some special function. I was taking Lord Jagannatha prasada very sumptuously. I am praying to Lord Jagannatha to take me there again at His will and honor His remnants of food. Hoping this will find you in good health. Your ever well-wisher,
