A person is said to have attained to yoga when, having renounced all material desires, he neither acts for sense gratification nor engages in fruitive activities. When a person is fully engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, he is pleased in himself, and thus he is no longer engaged in sense gratification or in fruitive activities. Otherwise, one must be engaged in sense gratification, since one cannot live without engagement. Without Krsna consciousness, one must be always seeking self-centered or extended selfish activities. But a Krsna conscious person can do everything for the satisfaction of Krsna and thereby be perfectly detached from sense gratification. One who has no such realization must mechanically try to escape material desires before being elevated to the top rung of the yoga ladder.
(More...) "A person is said to have attained yoga when, having renounced all material desires..." If one is in perfection of yoga, then he's satisfied. He has no more any material desire. That is perfection. "He neither acts for sense gratification nor engages in fruitive activities." Fruitive activities are also..., fruitive activities means you earn something for sense gratification. One is practically engaged in some sense gratification, and one is collecting money for sense gratification.
(More...) Imported quote 15881 Yoga means to inquire. What am I? If I am not this body, then what am I? I am pure soul. Now, if my bodily activities or sensual activities are incorrect, I will not be able to understand myself-what I am-and the Bhagavad-gita says that we are all grand fools. Why fools? Since we have this body, we are fools. If somebody invites you to come to his apartment but you know it is full of danger, do you think you would like to go there? "Oh no," you will say, "I am not going there. If it is full of danger, why shall I go?" Similarly, don't you think that the body is full of danger? Then, why are you going there, taking repeated birth? When you are flying in a plane, you are always fearful that there may be a crash. And what is this crashing? It is due to the body. The soul cannot be affected by crashes. But you are always afraid.
(More...) Imported quote 16462 Two words in this verse are very important; one word is pitari, and another word is guroḥ. The son or disciple should accept the words of his spiritual master and father without hesitation. Whatever the father and the spiritual master order should be taken without argument: "Yes." There should be no instance in which the disciple or the son says, "This is not correct. I cannot carry it out." When he says that, he is fallen. The father and the spiritual master are on the same platform because a spiritual master is the second father. The higher classes are called dvija, twice-born. Whenever there is a question of birth, there must be a father. The first birth is made possible by the actual father, and the second birth is made possible by the spiritual master. Sometimes the father and the spiritual master may be the same man, and sometimes they are different men. In any case, the order of the father or the order of the spiritual master must be carried out without hesitation, with an immediate "yes." There should be no argument. That is real service to the father and to the spiritual master. Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has stated that the order of the spiritual master is the life and soul of the disciples. As a man cannot separate his life from his body, so a disciple cannot separate the order of the spiritual master from his life. If a disciple follows the instruction of the spiritual master in that way, he is sure to become perfect. This is confirmed in the Upanisads: the import of Vedic instruction is revealed automatically only to one who has implicit faith in the Supreme Personality of Godhead and in his spiritual master. One may be materially considered an illiterate man, but if he has faith in the spiritual master as well as in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then the meaning of scriptural revelation is immediately manifested before him.
(More...) How do we want to be connected to Krsna? Do we want a loving connection or another kind of connection? What is the advantage? It must be obvious. Where there is a loving connection, there is the chance of reviving our normal relationship. We are all eternally related to Krsna by love because He is the father of everyone. He is the source of everything. Govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami. He is the cause of all causes, the original person. There is actually no question of anything but love. The question is simply how long you want to take until you revive that love of Krsna. How long will you be satisfied with loving all the reflections of Krsna? How long will you be satisfied by all the temporary manifestations of Krsna?
(More...) Imported quote 16853 This is Vedic mantra. So yoga means to think of Krsna. That is yoga. So it is also confirmed in the Sixth Chapter. We are reading Seventh Chapter. Krsna says... Krsna taught Arjuna how to practice yoga. Then He concluded His teaching on the yoga that,
(More...) Who is the first-class yogi? There are many different types of yogi. But who is the topmost yogi? Yoginam api sarvesam. Who is that? Mad-gatena antar-atmana: "One who is thinking of Me always." That is perfect yoga. So that statement, that "One who is thinking of Me always, he is perfect yogi," so that is now being explained. It is the conclusion of the Sixth Chapter, and in Seventh Chapter Krsna explains how you can think of Krsna twenty-four hours. This is being explained. Therefore He says, mayy asakta-manaḥ partha. How you can think of somebody else unless you are very much attached to him? Just like a boy is attached to some girl or a girl is attached to some... That is natural. So when he becomes too much attached, he always or she thinks always. Otherwise, it is not possible. To come to this attachment platform you have to learn how to love Krsna. Otherwise, how it is possible? Unless you love somebody, how can you think of him twenty-four hours? That is not possible.
(More...) Imported quote 18846 Tattva means the Absolute Truth. "You are Absolute Truth. Who can understand the Absolute Truth without Your mercy?" Just therefore Krsna is merciful to Arjuna, and therefore He said... Sri bhagavan uvaca, mayy asakta-manaḥ partha: "My dear Arjuna, if you simply concentrate or meditate upon Me, Krsna..." Mayy asakta. Mayi asakta. Mayi means "unto Me, Krsna." Mayy asakta-manaḥ, "Those who are attached to Me, that is perfect yoga." That is yoga. The yogis... You have heard the names of so many yogis, meditation. The meditation is good, but most of them do not know what is meditation. Most of them. How? Now, they do not meditate upon Krsna. Meditation means to fix up one's mind on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. First of all they do not know who is the Personality of Godhead. But the yoga practice, according to sastra, is that. Here it is: mayy asakta-manaḥ partha yogam. This is yoga. In other Vedic literature that is also stated, the same thing. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginaḥ [SB 12.13.1]. Yogi means who meditates. It is the business of the yogis to meditate. But if you do not know upon whom to meditate, then what is the meaning of your yoga? Therefore I have seen practically in America, there are so many yoga societies. They close their eyes, and I do not know what they are meditating, but I have seen they are snoring. [laughter] And what they will do? Eh? [makes snoring sound] [laughter] This is yoga system. So don't be misled by these bluffers' yoga system. Don't be misled. Here is yoga, Krsna, because yoga means to meditate upon the Supreme, dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa, mind fully absorbed, and they see Krsna or Narayana, the same thing. So,
(More...) The first-class yogi is. So actually it is so. As soon as you contact the Supreme, yoga... Yoga means contact, and another meaning, everyone knows, in mathematics, yoga: one plus one equal to two. And viyoga: one minus one equal to zero. Viyoga, vi-yoga, discontact, and contact. So we are now separated, separated superficially. "What is God? I don't care for God. I am God," this, that. Therefore yoga system is required to connect again your relation, reestablish. It is not broken. It is exactly like that: a boy is away from home for many, many years, so he is now separated or discontact. But immediately he can contact by remembering his father, mother, family, immediately. Immediately the relationship is revived. So yoga system means from time immemorial we have forgotten Krsna, or God. This is our position. Krsna bhuli' sei jiva anadi-bahirmukha [Cc Madhya 20.117].
(More...) Imported quote 18988 This is called abhyasa. Mind is going out of my control. I want to think of Krsna, but mind is thinking something else. This is called yoga practice. So we have to catch again mind: "Why you are going there? Come here. Think of Krsna." Then that is practice. That is called yoga. You cannot allow the mind. And when you can control the mind... Generally, we are controlled by the mind. That is the position of our conditional life. Baddha-jiva, mukta-jiva. Liberated soul and conditioned soul. What is the difference? Conditioned soul means who is becoming conditioned by the mind or controlled by the mind, he is conditioned soul. And liberated soul means who is not conditioned by the mind. Mind says, "Why not smoke one cigarette?" And when you'll be able to say, "No cigarette!" then you've controlled the mind. Mind will say always for some sense gratification. But when you control the mind, then you are liberated person. Therefore the svami, svami means controller, or gosvami. Svami does not mean you simply stamp over your name "Svami." No. Svami means the controller of the mind. He is not controlled by the mind; he controls the mind. Then he is svami. Gosvami. Go means "senses," and svami means "master." When you are able to control your senses, then you are a gosvami or svami, the same thing. Otherwise, godasa. Dasa means "servant." Everyone in this material world, he's godasa. Godasa means servant of the mind, servant of the senses. Everyone, servant of the senses. He may be very big man, but he's servant of the senses.
(More...) Imported quote 23204 Prabhupada: Yoga system means always see Supersoul. That is real yoga system. Perfection. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginaḥ [SB 12.13.1]. Yoginaḥ, being meditating and seeing the Supersoul, this is yoga. Not that he does not see. He is seeing Supersoul. He is seeing nothing else.
(More...) The Yoga-sūtra prescribes meditation on Viṣṇu, not meditation on the void. The word mat-paraḥ is most significant in this connection. How one can become a mat-paraḥ is described in the life of Maharaja Ambarisa. Srila Baladeva Vidyabhūsana, a great scholar and acarya in the line of the mat-paraḥ, remarks: "mad-bhakti-prabhavena sarvendriya-vijaya-pūrvika svatma drstiḥ sulabheti bhavaḥ." "The senses can be completely controlled only by the strength of devotional service to Krsna." Also the example of fire is sometimes given: "As the small flames within burn everything within the room, similarly Lord Visnu, situated in the heart of the yogi, burns up all kinds of impurities." The Yoga-sūtra also prescribes meditation on Visnu, and not meditation on the void. The so-called yogis who meditate on something which is not the Visnu form simply waste their time in a vain search after some phantasmagoria. We have to be Krsna conscious-devoted to the Personality of Godhead. This is the aim of the real yoga.
(More...) When a devotee is engaged in the service of the Lord, it is called the attainment of yoga. The English equivalent to the word "yoga" is "linking up." When a devotee is engaged in the service of the Lord, it is called the attainment of yoga. The English equivalent to the word "yoga" is "linking up." So actual linking up with Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, begins when the devotee renders service unto Him. Devotees situated in the transcendental rasa of servitorship render their particular service whenever there is an opportunity. Sometimes they sit down in front of Krsna to receive orders. Some persons are reluctant to accept this level of devotional service as actual bhakti-yoga, and in some of the Puranas also this servitorship in devotional service to Krsna is not accepted as the actual bhakti-yoga system. But in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it has been clearly indicated that the servitor relationship with Krsna is the actual beginning of yoga realization.
(More...) When we speak of yoga we refer to linking up our consciousness with the Supreme Absolute Truth When we speak of yoga we refer to linking up our consciousness with the Supreme Absolute Truth. Such a process is named differently by various practitioners in terms of the particular method adopted. When the linking up process is predominantly in fruitive activities, it is called karma-yoga, when it is predominantly empirical, it is called jnana-yoga, and when it is predominantly in a devotional relationship with the Supreme Lord, it is called bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga or Krsna consciousness is the ultimate perfection of all yogas, as will be explained in the next verse. The Lord has confirmed herein the superiority of yoga, but He has not mentioned that it is better than bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga is full spiritual knowledge, and as such, nothing can excel it. Asceticism without self-knowledge is imperfect. Empiric knowledge without surrender to the Supreme Lord is also imperfect. And fruitive work without Krsna consciousness is a waste of time. Therefore, the most highly praised form of yoga performance mentioned here is bhakti-yoga, and this is still more clearly explained in the next verse.
(More...) Yoga means to concentrate the mind upon the Supreme by controlling the ever-disturbing senses. Be steadfast in yoga, O Arjuna. Perform your duty and abandon all attachment to success or failure. Such evenness of mind is called yoga.
(More...) Krsna tells Arjuna that he should act in yoga. And what is that yoga? Yoga means to concentrate the mind upon the Supreme by controlling the ever-disturbing senses. And who is the Supreme? The Supreme is the Lord. And because He Himself is telling Arjuna to fight, Arjuna has nothing to do with the results of the fight. Gain or victory are Krsna's concern; Arjuna is simply advised to act according to the dictation of Krsna. The following of Krsna's dictation is real yoga, and this is practiced in the process called Krsna consciousness. By Krsna consciousness only can one give up the sense of proprietorship. One has to become the servant of Krsna, or the servant of the servant of Krsna. That is the right way to discharge duty in Krsna consciousness, which alone can help one to act in yoga.
