The term religiousness includes four primary subjects: namely, (1) pious activities, (2) economic development, (3) satisfaction of the senses, and (4) liberation from the material bondage. Religious life is distinguished from the irreligious life of barbarism, and human life begins from the life of religiousness. The four principles of animal life-eating, sleeping, defending and mating -are common both to the animals and the human beings. Religion is the extra concern of the human being, and without religion the so-called human life is no better than that of the animal. Therefore, in real human society there is some form of religion aiming at self realization, with reference to the eternal relationship with God.    (More...)

Through parental care, through remedies for different kinds of disease, and through means of protection on the water, in the air and on land, there is always an endeavor for relief from various kinds of suffering in the material world, but none of them are guaranteed measures for protection. They may be beneficial temporarily, but they afford no permanent benefit. Despite the presence of a father and mother, a child cannot be protected from accidental death, disease and various other miseries. No one can help, including the parents. Ultimately the shelter is the Lord, and one who takes shelter of the Lord is protected. This is guaranteed. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gita (9.31), kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktaḥ pranasyati: "O son of Kunti, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes." Therefore, unless one is protected by the mercy of the Lord, no remedial measure can act effectively. One should consequently depend fully on the causeless mercy of the Lord. Although as a matter of routine duty one must of course accept other remedial measures, no one can protect one who is neglected by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In this material world, everyone is trying to counteract the onslaught of material nature, but everyone is ultimately fully controlled by material nature. Therefore even though so-called philosophers and scientists try to surmount the onslaught of material nature, they have not been able to do so. Krsna says in Bhagavad-gita (13.9) that the real sufferings of the material world are four-janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi (birth, death, old age and disease). In the history of the world, no one has been successful in conquering these miseries imposed by material nature. Prakrteḥ kriyamanani gunaiḥ karmani sarvasaḥ. Nature (prakrti) is so strong that no one can overcome her stringent laws. So-called scientists, philosophers, religionists and politicians should therefore conclude that they cannot offer facilities to the people in general. They should make vigorous propaganda to awaken the populace and raise them to the platform of Krsna consciousness. Our humble attempt to propagate the Krsna consciousness movement all over the world is the only remedy that can bring about a peaceful and happy life. We can never be happy without the mercy of the Supreme Lord (tvad-upeksitanam). If we keep displeasing our supreme father, we shall never be happy within this material world, in either the upper or lower planetary systems.    (More...)
Therefore, where the Bhagavad-gita ends, that sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam [Bg 18.66], this is dharma-to surrender to Krsna. Any other dharma, they are not dharma. Otherwise, why Krsna asks, sarva-dharman parityajya: "Give up"? He said that dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge: "I advent to establish the principles of religion." And at last He says, sarva-dharman parityajya. That means the so-called dharmas that we have manufactured, man-made dharma, they are not dharmas. Dharma means what is given by God. But we have no understanding what is God and what is His word. That is the modern civilization defect. But the order is there, God is there-we won't accept. Where is the possibility of peace?    (More...)

Here, bhuvo bhara-jihirsaya. An avatara comes to do some particular work. Just like Lord Ramacandra came to punish Ravana. That is avatara. And there are many avataras, they are mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam: Matsya-avatara, Kūrma-avatara, and Varaha-avatara, Vamana-avatara, Nrsimha-avatara and Parasurama-avatara, Balarama-avatara, Buddha-avatara. Buddha is also avatara. Kesava dhrta-buddha-sarira jaya jagadisa hare [Dasavatara Stotra 9]. We do not agree with Buddha philosophy. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, veda na maniya bauddha haya ta' nastika [Cc Madhya 6.168]. Buddha philosophy is atheism: "There is no God." He says, "There is no God." So that is atheism. And especially... That there is no God, there is God-that is not the point. His point was to stop the animal-killing. Sadaya-hrdaya darsita-pasu-ghatam. Krsna became very, very, sympathetic with the poor animals: "Oh, in the name of yajna these rascals, rogues, are killing so many animals." Therefore He came as Buddha-avatara. Sadaya-hrdaya darsita-pasu-ghatam. Kesava dhrta-buddha-sarira jaya jagadisa hare. So Vaisnava knows that "Here is Lord Buddha. He's Krsna's avatara," although we don't take his philosophy, because Buddha refused to accept Vedic authority. Nindasi yajna-vidher ahaha sruti-jatam. Sruti means Veda. Sruti-jatam. In the sruti, in the Vedas, there is mention of pasu sacrifice, animal sacrifice, there is. So they began to argue with Lord Buddha that "You are stopping yajna-vidhi, stopping animal-killing in the yajna. This is mentioned in the Vedas." But Lord Buddha knew, "These rascals simply talking of Vedas, he does not know what is Vedas. But what is the use of arguing?" Therefore he has to say, "I don't care for your Vedas. Stop animal-killing." So nindasi yajna-vidheḥ. Yajna-vidhi, he wanted to stop: no more animal sacrifice in the yajna. Therefore he is denying the authority of Vedas. Nindasi yajna-vidher ahaha sruti-jatam. We cannot violate which is mentioned in the... Therefore he was taken... But he's avatara. It was needed at that time.    (More...)
Every living being either a man or an animal or a bird etc everyone thinks that he is free by himself but actually nobody is free from the severe laws of the Lord.* That is the condition of material existence. All living beings in the material world have taken up the risk of conditioned life by their own selection and have thus been entrapped by the laws of material nature. The human form of life is meant for understanding this conditioned life and thus become free from the clutches of material existence and the only means for getting out of the entanglement is to agree to obey the Supreme. But instead of becoming free from the clutches of Maya or illusion, the foolish human being becomes bound up by different nomenclatures of being designated as Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Sudras, Hindus, Mussalmans, Indians, Europeans, Americans, Chinese, and many others and thus carry on the orders of the Supreme Lord under the influence respective scriptural or legislative injunctions.* Such scriptural injunctions are made by a liberated representative of God in consideration of different conditions of living and by carrying on such orders of the Lord gradually the conditioned living beings become free from the clutches of material existence. The factual position of the living being is, however, that he is eternally servitor of the Supreme Lord. In his liberated state he renders service to the Lord in transcendental love and thus enjoys a life of full freedom even sometimes on the equal level with the Lord or sometimes more than the Lord. But in the conditioned state of the material world every living being wants to be the Lord of other living beings and thus by the illusion of Maya such mentality of lording it over, becomes a cause of further extention of conditional life. So in the material world the living being is still more conditioned till he surrenders unto the Lord by reviving his original state of eternal servitorship. That is the last instruction of the Bhagwat Geeta and all other recognised scriprures of the world.    (More...)

Although all beings in the universe are resting in Krsna's energy, still they are not in Him. Krsna is maintaining all living entities, and His energy is all-pervading, yet He is elsewhere. This is Krsna's inconceivable mystic power. He is everywhere, yet He is aloof from everything. We can perceive his energy, but we cannot see Him because He cannot be seen with material eyes. However, when we develop our spiritual qualities, we sanctify our senses so that even within this energy we can see Him. Electricity, for instance, is everywhere, and an electrician is capable of utilizing it. Similarly, the energy of the Supreme Lord is everywhere, and when we become transcendentally situated, we can see God eye to eye everywhere. That spiritualization of the senses is possible through devotional service and love of God. The Lord is all-pervading all over the universe and is within the soul, the heart, water, air-everywhere. Thus if we make an image of God in anything-clay, stone, wood or whatever-it should not be considered to be just a doll. That also is God. If we have sufficient devotion, the image will also speak to us. God is everywhere impersonally (maya tatam idam sarvam), but if we make His personal form from anything, or if we create an image of God within ourselves, He will be present personally for us. In the sastras, there are eight kinds of images recommended, and any kind of image can be worshiped because God is everywhere. One may protest and ask, "Why should God be worshiped in images and not in His original spiritual form?" The answer is that we cannot see God immediately in His spiritual form. With our material eyes we can only see stone, earth, wood-something tangible. Therefore Krsna comes as arca-vigraha, a form conveniently presented by the Supreme Lord in order for us to see Him. The result is that if we concentrate upon the image and make offerings with love and devotion, Krsna will respond through the image.    (More...)

The purpose is how to become disentangled with this family relationship. Family or society, that is the increase or expansion of the same affection. So the so-called nationalism is also materialism. There is the simply expansion. Just like you have got a party of rogues, and a big party or small party, the business is plundering. That's all. Because you have got a very big party of thieves, it does not mean that you are immune from criminal activities. Therefore these things are not required. People have become accustomed, but we discourage them. We do not approve this so-called nationalism. Therefore we have named "Internationalism," "International," no distinction between this nation or that nation, this religion or that religion.    (More...)

So Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement is, the starting point is, the spirit soul. And automatically, unless... In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord said the sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg 18.66]: "You give up the so-called man-made duties, or occupation, or dharma. You just surrender unto Me." So actually this is dharma, or religion: to surrender to God. God is one. He is neither Hindu nor Muslim nor Christian. God is one. If there is another God, then there is competition. God cannot be two. God is one. Eko brahma dvitiya nasti. That is the Vedic injunction. So God is one. So either you become Hindu or Muslim, the God is one. This is to be understood. So the science of God, that is Krsna consciousness. You try to understand scientifically what is meant by God, what is meant by religion. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's preaching. Jivera svarūpa haya nitya krsna dasa [Cc Madhya 20.108-109]. He begins His teaching on this principle, that every living being is eternal servant of God. That's all. And this is religion. Religion does not mean stamping in different way. Religion means to know God, the great, and we are subordinate, maintained by God. This is religion. If anyone knows these two things only-God is great, and we are subordinate; our duty is to abide by the orders of God-that is religion.    (More...)

Answer: Religious system means the law given by God. In every system of religion the order is to follow the instruction given by God or His representative. Unfortunately, the so-called followers deviate from the orders of the master and sometimes create their own concocted religious system. Otherwise, there can't be different religions. We therefore accept only one religion which teaches one how to love God. Any religious system which doesn't teach this, how to love God is not religion, but is cheating system. The conditioned souls who have come to this world on account of forgetfulness of his eternal relationship with God is prone to be cheated, but a person who is sincere is not cheated, but he takes up the path which leads one to the perfection of life, how to love God. The present religious and spiritual systems in varieties come into existence on account of imperfect leaders who defied the authority of God. My suggestion is therefore that the leaders who actually agree as eternal servant of God may sit together and find out the ways and means of one religious system in this world. God is one. There cannot be many gods, otherwise there is no meaning of God. In the English dictionary, you find that God means the "Supreme Being.'' There are unlimited number of living beings, but God is one Supreme Being. Supreme Being must be one. Nobody can be equal to Him, and nobody can be greater than Him, otherwise there is no meaning of God. At the present moment it has become a fashion to become God very cheaply, therefore, such system being very cheap and not authorized, there are so many religious systems. Otherwise, God is one, all living entities are His eternal servants, and therefore, the real religious system is to learn how to serve God.    (More...)
Imported quote 24201
So the purpose of religion is to train person how to love God. That is the purpose of all religion. Either you take Christianism or Hinduism or any "ism," the purport is that you try to love God, because that is our natural inclination. Even in uncivilized society, when there is some thunderbolt, they immediately offer obeisances. That is natural. And in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said, sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje [SB 1.2.6].    (More...)
So really, religion means to surrender to God. Religion means to abide by the orders of God. That is religion, simple definition of religion. Religion: dharmam tu saksad bhagavat [SB 6.3.19]. Just like good citizen. What does it mean, "a good citizen"? Who abides by the laws of the state, he is a good citizen. Who does not violate the… Just like in your country I see, in parks, in beaches: "No dogs allowed." The law is there, but everyone is breaking that law. Everyone is taking the dog to create disturbance. You see? I see the signboard: "Dogs are not allowed here." But it is, deliberately violated: "Dogs are allowed there." This is not good citizenship. Good citizenship means abiding by the laws of the state. Just like in your road, it is said, "Keep to the right." So you cannot drive your car in the right side. [aside: Oh? No? Right side you have to drive.] "Keep to the right, not on the left side." In this way, good citizenship means to abide by the laws of the state. Similarly, dharmik, a religious man means who abides by the laws of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Just like Christian religion, the laws, God's order: Ten Commandments. So one who abides by that commandment, he is really religious. Or in other religion also, there are rules and regulations. Just like in Vedic system, a religious person must avoid these four principles of sinful life. What is that? No illicit sex, no intoxication, no meat-eating, no gambling. Yatradharmas catur-vidhaḥ [SB 1.17.38]. Adharma, "irreligious." So similarly, in every religion there are some "do's" and "do not's." So anyone who abides by these "do's" and "do not's," he is religious. It does not matter whether he is a Christian or a Muslim or a Hindu or Buddhist. It does not matter. But if he strictly abides by the laws given in that religion, then he is a good man, religious man. So… And there is no fight between religious men. Fight is between irreligious men. But among the… I have read in some book-that Aquatic Gospel?-that formerly, during Lord Jesus Christ's time, some meeting were held occasionally among all religious people, all religious people. And in one meeting some Hindu's name was there; he is very prominent.    (More...)

My mission is in the line of Lord Caitanya, Who is Personified Love of Godhead, and Who advented Himself 482 years ago in India, and preached God consciousness all over the country. His mission is to revive God consciousness all over the world, on the basis of Srimad-Bhagavatam (Science of God). The principle of Srimad-Bhagavatam is that any religious faith which helps a man to develop Love of God, without any motive, and without being hampered by any material condition, is transcendental religion. And the best process or the easiest process, in this age especially, is to chant the Holy name of God. From this definition of religion as we find in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the criterion test of religion is how it helps people to develop his dormant Love of God, which is not artificially invoked, but it is aroused from within by bona fide association of devotees and hearing about God.    (More...)
Imported quote 24366
This process of elevating oneself from different platforms of understanding to the highest status of life is called religion. According to the Sanskrit language, religion is not a kind of faith, but it is a prescribed form of duty to be discharged by the respective divisions of human society, ultimately rising to the platform of Krsna consciousness or God consciousness. The first-class religion, therefore, is that which teaches love of God because religion means to understand one's position in relationship with God.    (More...)
The principles of religion do not stand on some dogmas or manmade formulas, but they stand on four primary regulative observances, namely austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness.
You are now standing on one leg only, which is your truthfulness, and you are somehow or other hobbling along. But quarrel personified [Kali], flourishing by deceit, is also trying to destroy that leg.    (More...)
The principles of religion do not stand on some dogmas or manmade formulas, but they stand on four primary regulative observances, namely austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness.
The principles of religion do not stand on some dogmas or manmade formulas, but they stand on four primary regulative observances, namely austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness. The mass of people must be educated to practice these principles from childhood. Austerity means to accept voluntarily things which may not be very comfortable for the body but are conducive for spiritual realization, for example, fasting. Fasting twice or four times a month is a sort of austerity which may be voluntarily accepted for spiritual realization only, and not for any other purposes, political or otherwise. Fastings which are not meant for self-realization but for some other purposes are condemned in the Bhagavad-gita (Bg. 17.56). Similarly, cleanliness is necessary both for the mind and the body. Simply bodily cleanliness may help to some extent, but cleanliness of the mind is necessary, and it is effected by glorifying the Supreme Lord. No one can cleanse the accumulated mental dust without glorifying the Supreme Lord. A godless civilization cannot cleanse the mind because it has no idea of God, and for this simple reason people under such a civilization cannot have good qualifications, however they may be materially equipped. We have to see things by their resultant action. The resultant action of human civilization in the age of Kali is dissatisfaction, so everyone is anxious to get peace of mind. This peace of mind was complete in the Satya Age because of the existence of the above-mentioned attributes of the human being. Gradually these attributes have diminished in the Treta-yuga to three fourths, in the Dvapara to half, and in this age of Kali they are diminished to one fourth, which is also gradually diminishing on account of prevailing untruthfulness. By pride, either artificial or real, the resultant action of austerity is spoiled; by too much affection for female association, cleanliness is spoiled; by too much addiction to intoxication, mercifulness is spoiled; and by too much lying propaganda, truthfulness is spoiled. The revival of Bhagavata-dharma can save the human civilization from falling a prey to evils of all description.    (More...)
