Imported quote 14973 Another important item is dvandva-titiksa. As long as one is situated in the material world, there must be pleasure and pain arising from the material body. As Krsna advises in Bhagavad-gita, tams titiksasva bharata. One has to learn how to tolerate the temporary pains and pleasures of this material world. One must also be detached from his family and practice celibacy. Sex with one's wife according to the scriptural injunctions is also accepted as brahmacarya (celibacy), but illicit sex is opposed to religious principles, and it hampers advancement in spiritual consciousness. Another important word is vijnana-virajita. Everything should be done very scientifically and consciously. One should be a realized soul. In this way, one can give up the entanglement of material bondage.

A devotee should be so advanced that in spite of being troubled by the asuras, he should tolerate, titiksavaḥ, and still he should be kind upon him, not that "This man is talking against me, against God. Therefore I shall be angry and drive him away." No. Titiksavaḥ karunikaḥ. Everyone in this material world, more or less, they are asuras, atheists. So if you want to preach, then you have to learn tolerance and speak in such a way that these asura can become also devotee. That is the business.
(More...) Imported quote 18920 The more we become advanced in spiritual consciousness, the more we become situated in atma-stha. That is called sthita-prajna. Then we shall not be disturbed. And we should practice not to be disturbed by these conditional or ethereal transformation. We should. Because we do not belong, as spirit soul, aham brahmasmi, I do not belong to this material arrangement, but I have been accustomed to this. So by practice I have to come to the spiritual status. And during practice it requires tolerance. That is called bhajana, sadhana or tapasya, austerity, penance, tolerance. The things which are not, but somehow or other, we have identified with such material things, and to practice again, come to the spiritual platform, that tolerance is called tapasya. This is the meaning of tapasya. Tapaḥ means pain, to voluntarily accepting some pain. Just like sannyasa, kali-kara[?]. In this age it is very difficult. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave us the example that He was lying down on the floor. His devotee wanted to give Him a quilt, a soft bedding, but He refused. He did not take it. So He is teaching us. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the teacher. Apani acari' prabhu jivere sikhaila. But still, it is very difficult to strictly follow. But we must try to follow as far as possible.
(More...) One has to learn tolerance in the face of dualities such as happiness and distress, or cold and warmth. As long as the material body exists, there are actions and reactions in the material modes. One has to learn tolerance in the face of dualities such as happiness and distress, or cold and warmth, and by tolerating such dualities become free from anxieties regarding gain and loss. This transcendental position is achieved in full Krsna consciousness when one is fully dependant on the good will of Krsna
