never successful

Imported quote 14548
The living entity struggles very hard due to the influence of fruitive activity and mental speculation and simply gets a different type of body life after life. He eats all kinds of nonsense and is condemned by his activities of sense enjoyment. If one really wants to progress in life, he must give up the ways of karma-kanḍa and jnana-kanḍa, fruitive activities and mental speculation. Being fixed in Krsna consciousness, one can become free from the entanglement of birth and death and the vain struggle for existence. In these verses the words mrga-trsnam pradhavati are very significant because the living entity is influenced by a thirst for sense enjoyment. He is like a deer that goes to the desert to search out water. In a desert an animal simply searches in vain for water. Of course there is no water in the desert, and the animal simply sacrifices his life in an attempt to find it. Everyone is planning for future happiness, thinking that somehow or other, if he can reach a certain point, he will be happy. In actuality, however, when he comes to that point, he sees that there is no happiness. He then plans to go further and further to another point. This is called mrga-trsna, and its basis is sense enjoyment in this material world.    (More...)

So these materialistic persons, the karmis, they are trying to be happy by material adjustment. That has been described in the Bhagavata, durasaya: "This kind of hope is never to be fulfilled. It will never be successful." But the karmis, they think they will be successful. They are struggling very hard. So durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninaḥ. How? Now, bahir-artha. Bahiḥ, bahiḥ prajna, or external energy, or the material energy. The material energy is called external energy. So that is called bahiḥ. Bahiḥ means external.    (More...)
Because they are thinking so, tied up by the rules and regulation of the stringent laws of material nature. But they are thinking... They are called karmis. So they cannot be santa. By material activities you cannot be happy or peaceful. That is not possible. That is being explained here, that yat tat sattva-gunam svaccham santam. Sattva-guna. You have to come to the platform of the mode of goodness, and still it is to be purified. That is called vasudeva platform, or transcendental platform. As it is explained in the Bhagava..., vasudevaḥ sarvam iti [Bg 7.19]. That time, when you come to that platform, you will see everything godly. Vasudevaḥ sarvam. Īsavasyam idam sarvam .    (More...)
Prabhupada: Ah! Ataeva santa. There is santi. You have to test whether by..., by some desire, whether you have become santa. That is not possible except Krsna. When you serve Krsna, then you will feel transcendental pleasure. Otherwise you cannot. Sakali asanta. For mukti they have to do so many things, so many things. So desirelessness means to desire for Krsna. This is the conclusion. That Caitanya Mahaprabhu's teaching: mama janmani janmanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi. This is desire. "My life after life, simply My devotion unto You may be fixed up." That's all. This is Krsna consciousness. In the beginning He says, na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jaga... . "No, no, no, no, not this." Then there must be some positive. And the positive is: mama janmani janmanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi. With simply negative, what you'll do? Simply negative? You must give something positive. Then you'll be satisfied. You are serving somewhere. You don't get sufficient salary. So you desire to give up this, this service. Resignation. But if you don't get any better service, then what will be the result of resignation? You'll starve. Again you'll go, "Master, I did wrong. Please give me that service." So that is... The Mayavadis' position is like that. They want to become merged into the Supreme. But that is not possible. After some time... Aruhya krcchrena param padam tataḥ patanty adhaḥ [SB 10.2.32].    (More...)
