PURPORT

Expansion of ignorance is explained in this verse, that the first ignorance is to identify one's material body made of five elements as his self, and bodily relationship he accepts something as his own, and in this way his ignorance expands. In other words, the living entity is etern..., eternal, but on account of his accepting nonpermanent things, identifying his interest, he is put into ignorance and therefore he suffers material pangs.
