Prabhupada: Hey? Who is this?
Devotee: [over sound system] Jaya Jaya Jaya Prabhupada! [sings] nama om visnu-padaya krsna-presthaya bhu-tale...
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna [break] Hmm? Yes.
Upendra: The flies don't like nim.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Upendra: They don't like nim? The flies.
Prabhupada: That ask them. [laughter] You do not expect all answers from me, whether the flies like or not like. This is antiseptic. Nim is very, very antiseptic. Therefore it is natural, the flies and bugs, they are afraid of. Yes. [break] ...here?
Harikesa: He's the purchaser.
Aksayananda: He does shopping.
Prabhupada: Namaskar. Hare Krsna. [Transl. Is your health good?]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes, Prabhupada.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. When did you come?]
Indian man: [Transl. I have been here since the month of Sravana. [July-August] We are having a big program here. Last year we held it and this year also we are continuing it.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Where is your program?]
Indian man: [Transl. In Fogla asrama.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. I see! That...]
Indian man: [Transl. ...Caitanya-lila. Hargovind Svami. That...What's his name?]
Indian man: Dhandhariya.
Prabhupada: Dandhariya. Where is he? [Transl. One who captures dhana] [wealth.]
Indian man: [Transl. Very strongly.] [laughs]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Dhandhariya means one who holds money. Is it not?]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes. Holds well and tight.]
Prabhupada: He knows how to capture. He is the... [Transl. It is his institution I think.]
Indian man: [Transl. He is the organizer. But I am the director.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. You were supposed to go to the foreign countries?]
Indian man: [Transl. Did you go to the foreign countries like Japan, Hong Kong? We met the devotees in Hong Kong temple and had kirtana together. About four or five persons were there from our group. The organizing secretary of Visva Hindu Parisad and some others were there. We toured Indonesia, and especially in Singapore we had very good time. We toured many places and chanted Haribol! And they were saying, we will send you tickets. You come every year.]
Prabhupada: [aside:] Hare Krsna. Jaya. [Transl. A lot of Hindus live there.]
Indian man: [Transl. Many Hindus reside there. This side we have not visited yet. Europe we have gone. We lived there three months.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. First...]
Indian man: [Transl. First we went to Lagos. In Lagos we performed kirtana in a Gurudvara for ten days. Very pompously. Then the Communists started giving us trouble.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Commissioner?]
Indian man: [Transl. No, the Communists people. They deported us and we then went to Bankok from there. In Bankok we stayed for two months and chanted Haribol vigourusly. This is where local people liked the music of haribol very much.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. That is wanted. Caitanya...]
Indian man: [Transl. The holy name.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Harer nama.
Indian man: [Transl. Harinama. It was God's mercy! Then from Hong Kong we went to Singapore. Then Japan. In Japan a program was arranged by the Indian Social Society. All Hindu families gathered in that program.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Where in Japan? Tokyo?]
Indian man: [Transl. No. [break] There we stayed Kuwait.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. There are many Hindus in Kuwait.]
Indian man: [Transl. Many Hindu Families live in Kuwait.]
Prabhupada: Hmm. [aside:] Hare Krsna. Jaya.
Indian man: [Transl. Then Singapore, Jakarta. You had been to Jakarta I believe?]
Prabhupada: Hmm.
Indian man: [Transl. They told me. And in Kowloon, Hong Kong you have got a temple! Two of your devotees met us there. They would play khol: drum with us. We took great pleasure, Maharajaji. Huge preaching was done there. Here in Asia there is not much need of Hindi.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. No. Only in China.]
Indian man: [Transl. Then one family was about to send us to Sydney. We were tired, and I said, no sir, I will go back to Vrndavana now.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Sydney...In Fiji we have got a mandir.]
Indian man: [Transl. You have one in Fiji?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Yes. In Sydney also. Maharajaji, here your mandir is so beautiful that it is always crowded like Bihariji and Radharamanaji. Lots of people come.]
Indian man: [Transl. As if Mahaprabhu has personally appeared here.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. I thought nobody will come so far.]
Indian man: [Transl. Oh No! Radhe Radhe! It has become famous now as aungrejoka mandir] [English temple.] (laughs)]
Prabhupada: [Transl. It is indeed English temple. They are the ones who brought all the money. Not Englishmen, [Britishers] but Americans.]
Indian man: [Transl. Their dollar rate is very high also, Maharajaji. Hong Kong currency value is double than ours, and American dollar is very expensive. If you bring 100 dollar it becomes 800 rupees in India.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. 800 rupees is bank rate per 100 dollar and if you sell it in black market it is even more.]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes, more. When I brought I brought it through bank.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Hmm. It is 7.5 or 7.75 like that.]
Indian man: [Transl. They gave me 8.30 rate.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Somehow or other the holy name, Hare Krsna, must be preached.]
Indian man: [Transl. Someone was telling me, I think Rama Niwas that the Prime Minister has called you. She wants to discuss with you something. Did she?]
Prabhupada: Hmm.
Indian man: [Transl. I see. So did you meet her or not yet?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Yes, I met.]
Indian man: [Transl. I see. Is her intention favourable towards your mission?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Her personality is very good. Personally she appreciated our mission. Anyone for that matter would appreciate. So much good work is going on throughout the whole world. Only a fool will not appreaciate it. This thing never happened in the History. Anyone with a brain would appreaciate it. Some people appreaciate and some people try to put obstacles in the way. Such people are also there.]
Indian man: [Transl. Many people ask me regarding this that such a huge society has come into existence, so what is the truth behind it? Do they spy upon us or something? We have to convince people here very strongly.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. That is the rumour they are spreading that these people are spies.]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes. But we convince them clearly that they are pure vaisnavas. So far many acaryas...Actually no acarya has gone there as yet, but those mahatmas who have gone abroad they have not preached strongly. We got good result for our labour in Hong Kong. They liked us very much.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Amongst Cinmayananda's followers there is no foreigner. Only Hindus follow him.]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes, yes. You are right.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. If any religious person goes and speaks the poor Hindus who are fallen into illusion, they come to hear something. They don't get any opportunity. But the Hindus will remain as they are no matter how much they appreaciate you. They will...]
Indian man: [Transl. ...never change completely.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Their demand is, give blessings so that our income will increase.]
Indian man: [Transl. [laughs] Yes.]
Prabhupada: Where is Gunarnava, he has not come?
Aksayananda: No.
Prabhupada: So he is going to Mathura? You told him? Huh?
Aksayananda: He is going after breakfast.
Devotee: What is the purpose?
Aksayananda: To meet Prabhupada's relative, I think?
Prabhupada: Yes. You have told?
Devotee: Oh. Yes.
Prabhupada: So from Mathura he can bring that medicine. You can give him.
Devotee: Castor oil.
Aksayananda: I'll tell him, Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: No, no, castor oil can be had...
Upendra: Yogendra Ras and Rasanta [indistinct].
Aksayananda: I'll have him bring it.
Prabhupada: You can take the vial. There is, what is called? Sadhana Ausadhalaya [medical store].
Aksayananda: I see.
Indian man: Dhaka. [Dacca] [Capital of Bangladesh]
Prabhupada: Yes. [Transl. Yes, it is from Dhaka.] From there you have to take it.
Aksayananda: Sadhana Ausadhalaya.
Prabhupada: Sadhana. On the bottle it is written there.
Aksayananda: I'll have him do it.
Indian man: [Transl. Maharajaji, will you be able to spare some time either in the morning or in the evening? When should we arrange your program there? A grand program because a huge crowd usually gathers. One day we must dance and chant together and enjoy. Also it will be a good publicity for your mission. We will also tell people about you all.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. What will happen?]
Indian man: [Transl. The holy name will be spread. And your feetdust will bless the place.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. That I have got experience in India that no matter how much you tell them their round shaped tail will not straighten.]
Indian man: [Transl. [laughs It will remain crooked.]
Prabhupada: They will never take seriously. [Transl. The Mayavada philosophy has ruined them. This I know very well. All are Mayavadis: impersonalists. They say, God has no form. He is formless. That's all. It is very difficult to convince them. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said, mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa. [Cc Madhya 6.169]
Indian man: [Transl. ...haya sarva-nasa.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. One will be doomed for whole life. Anyone who accepts mayavada philosophy his life is ruined.]
Indian man: [Transl. His determination will diminish.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. No determination he has got. He is an atheist. All Mayavadis are atheists. Their religion is simply an artificial show. They are all atheists! God exists, but God has no form! That's it! All finished! Krsne aparadhi [Cc Madhya 17.129] They are offender to Krsna, all these Mayavadis. And in Vrndavana this Mayavadi philosophy has become very strong. Even the so-called Vaisnavas, they are also... [Transl. Many Mayavadis come to us and we welcome them and give them a chance. But that poison-form has come from the formless. They begin to poison our men like this. Bhagavan has Himself said, avyaktam vyaktim apannam manyante mam abuddhayah [Bg 7.24] That previously I was formless and now I have accepted a form-only fools accept this theory. Param bhavam ajananto, they do not understand His Supreme nature. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu never used to mix with them when He went to Varanasi]
Indian man: [Transl. During His time almost all the Mayavadis were uprooted. Everyone became devotees.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. That is another thing. But personally...]
Indian man: [Transl. ...hesitated to meet them?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Yes. Now in India especially, everyone has become Mayavadi. Mayavadi...What is that?
mayavadam asac-chastram
pracchannam bauddham ucyate [Lord Siva informed goddess Durga, the superintendent of the material world:] "In the Age of Kali I take the form of a brahmana and explain the Vedas through false scriptures in an atheistic way, similar to Buddhist philosophy."]
Indian man: [Transl. Pracchannam bauddham, what?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Bauddham ucyate. It is nothing but Buddhism in a covered way. The Buddhists say that...You will understand English?]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes. Yes.]
Prabhupada: Buddhist, they say that there is no God.
Indian man: They can't believe God.
Prabhupada: Whatever it may be, they deny. Therefore we call them atheist. But these Mayavadi, they take the shelter of Vedas and they preach the same philosophy: "Yes, brahma-nirakara: [formless]." [Transl. He has no hands, no legs, no face, nothing. If your hands are cut off, legs are cut off, throat is cut off, then what remains of you? What is left? If you are formless then what else remains? This is their philosophy. At least they directly say we don't believe in God. And the Mayavadis, taking shelter of the Vedas, declare God is impersonal. He has no form. That's all. This cheating is going on. At that time,] for the time being, Saṅkaracarya might have said something like that to turn the Buddhists again to Vedas, but that is temporary. But they have taken it all through.
Indian man: [Transl. He wrote a commentary on Visnu-sahasra-nama: [one thousand names of Lord Visnu.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. He was an incarnation of Lord Siva. Can he ever be a non devotee? That was only a propaganda. Even Buddha was an incarnation of the Supreme Lord.]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes, Buddha is also an incarnation.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Yes. But the philosophy should be understood correctly. What is happening at what time and circumstances. But no, that is applicable for ever. This is foolishness!]
Indian man: [Transl. I saw in Thailand that all the followers of Buddha eat everything and what not.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. They eat everything.]
Indian man: [Transl. Food intake is a big problem.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Here in India this Rama Krishna mission people eat everything. Do you know this?]
Indian man: [Transl. Yes, I have seen everything.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. And they openly argue that what's harm in eating this? Sometimes when our students happen to meet them, they say, we have given up everything! No difficulty at all! They are almost one hundred years,] ...eighty-five years they are working. They have no position. [Transl. And this Mahesh Yogi advertises,] What is that? TM?
Brahmananda: TM, Transcendental Meditation.
Prabhupada: And what is the items they say?
Brahmananda: No philosophy, no belief, no restrictions.
Prabhupada: [laughs] Just see. He is advertising. Mahesh Yogi.
Indian man: Mahesh Yogi, yes, his followers, they are taking everything.
Prabhupada: He says, "There is no restriction, or no philosophy, no faith."
Prabhupada: He says, "There is no restriction, or no philosophy, no faith." [Transl. Our scriptures declare, dharmena hinah pasubhih samanah, [Hitopadesa 25] and they preach there is no need of dharma or anything! This is going on. Their dharma is, yata mata tata patha [as many opinions as many ways], Vivekananda also said this. As many opinions... [aside:] Hare Krsna.]
Indian man: [Transl. But they will not be successful, because the yuga-dharma is saṅkirtana.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Yes!]
Indian man: [Transl. Without saṅkirtana these people are just like glow-worms who shine for a while and then vanish.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. That's what is happening. I am seeing it. People join for a few days and then.... For our movement, big, big scholars have written books!]
Indian man: [Transl. Really?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Yes!] Recently one book was published by Professor Judah. He has studied this movement for five years. He came to India. So he has written one book, Hare Krishna and Counterculture, Very scholarly. [Transl. Very learned person!] He appreciated. [Transl. Many more books are being published by our movement.]
Indian man: [Transl. You have got so many literatures even now.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. At least fifty books I have, four hundred pages each. Let all the missionaries show like this!] And we are selling twenty lakhs' worth monthly.
Indian man: [Transl. Monthly, yes.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. That's how we maintain this huge organization!]
Indian man: [Transl. And you have lot of expenditure I am sure.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Here our monthly expenditure is about twenty thousand rupees.]
Indian man: [Transl. Here alone.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. And we don't care. Whatever is required spend it. That's all.]
Indian man: [Transl. You are right.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Most people cheat them. What can be done? Ok! You are bringing! You spend it! But we are Indians, we have to protest, "Look boys, you are spending too much!" But they don't know. People cheat them. What can be done?]
Indian man: [Transl. Would you go still far or this is enough?]
Prabhupada: [Transl. Little more we will go.]
Indian man: [Transl. Ok. I will stop here.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. All right.]
Indian man: [Transl. So Maharajaji, at least one day we will arrange your program either in the morning or in the evening as you please.]
Prabhupada: [Transl. I will let you know.]
Indian man: [Transl. That's good. I will be meeting you daily.]
Aksayananda: Nobody knows your limit, Prabhupada. Nobody knows your limit.
Prabhupada: No, generally. Who remembers?
Harikesa: It was way back there.
Brahmananda: It was back there by that... [laughter]
Prabhupada: Huh? No, no. I remember.
Aksayananda: I think it was here somewhere. [break]
Prabhupada: Ants are freely moving. They do not know it is dangerous. Similarly, all these living entities in material world, they think, "It is not dangerous. It is all right." Ant civilization.
French devotee (1): Srila Prabhupada, is there some worship of God in the animal kingdom?
Prabhupada: No. [aside:] Hare Krsna. Hare Krsna.
Harikesa: Hut hut hut hut!
Prabhupada: "Hut" will not do.
Brahmananda: Stick will do.
Prabhupada: At least show. [break] Trees and other lower animals, they are abiding by the order of Krsna. That is worship.
Brahmananda: But is it voluntary or involuntary?
Prabhupada: By force. By force now this tree is standing. He has to stand up here. It cannot move an inch.
Brahmananda: Would that be considered worship if it is...?
Prabhupada: Yes, it is.
Aksayananda: Indirect worship.
Prabhupada: Indirect worship, abiding. Just like you don't worship the government, revolt. But when you are put into jail you have to worship the government.
Aksayananda: We don't worship, yet we don't break the law.
Prabhupada: You cannot break the law. Outside you break law. That you can do. But when you are put into jail, then you cannot. And jail means unless the government finds that you are now obedient to the government laws... [dog growling and barking]
Brahmananda: Hut!
Devotees: Hare Krsna.
Prabhupada: He is taking our shelter, [laughter] the other dog.
Aksayananda: I've seen dogs follow saṅkirtana party for many miles. Once a dog was following, and he had tilaka, he had a tilaka mark on his head.
Prabhupada: No, no. Who? Who marked it? Somebody? No, no. You should not do it.
Brahmananda: Did someone put tilaka on the dog?
Aksayananda: Oh, I mean to say the color of his body was such.
Prabhupada: Oh, that is another thing. But you cannot put tilaka. Don't make tilaka so cheap. Natural tilaka, that is another thing.
Aksayananda: Yes.
French devotee (2): If a devotee step on the ant, does the ant receive some benefit?
Prabhupada: Hmm?
French devotee (2): If a devotee step on a ant by mistake, the ant...
Prabhupada: You should be careful. Why should you commit mistake? But if unconsciously by mistake it is done, that is another thing.
Brahmananda: He wants to know does the ant receive benefit?
Prabhupada: No. Then he will be lenient to kill them to give them benefit. [laughter] He'll be so...
Brahmananda: Like they say "mercy killing," that "This is good for you. I will kill you and it is good for you."
Prabhupada: Yes. You should always think that you are responsible for its killing. But it may be Krsna may excuse you. That is another thing. Consciously you cannot kill. [break]
Aksayananda: ...people in India, Prabhupada, are still pure vegetarians, but almost all of their children eat eggs and try to smoke cigarettes, and they don't stop them because they don't have any philosophy because of the Mayavadi philosophy.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Aksayananda: Almost 90% of all the people we preach to, they are all influenced by Mayavadi philosophy.
Prabhupada: Yes. That I was talking. [break]
Brahmananda: ...say that the egg is from God and the apple is from God.
Prabhupada: So why don't you eat apple? [laughter]
Aksayananda: They are also envious of you, Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: I know that. Do they say like that?
Aksayananda: Not directly. But when we explain how many things, what is being done, and we show photographs, how people have become devotees, they will say, "Yes, but have you heard of Swami So-and-so?" And we'll say, "Yes, we have heard of him. But our Guru Maharaja has got thousands of devotees all over the world." "Yes, he has also got thousands of devotees." They'll minimize, even though it's there in black and white.
Prabhupada: But where they are?
Brahmananda: Yeah. Where are those thousands of disciples of these other swamis?
Prabhupada: "Here we are, but where are the swami's disciples?" Ask them.
Aksayananda: Then they will become angry.
Prabhupada: "No, no. Well, don't be angry. Well, Bhaktivedanta Swami's disciples, we are present here. Present anyone else. So how shall I believe you?"
Aksayananda: Then they will say, "We are doing the same as you. But we don't have to help you because we are already doing the same thing. We are feeding the poor, giving charity."
Prabhupada: Yes. They do not understand.
Aksayananda: But yet their children are eating eggs, giving up. [break]
Brahmananda: ...say that they are doing the same thing that we are doing, then that should be a reason to help us, not to not help us. If we're doing the same thing, therefore if you are helping one, then you must help the other also.
Aksayananda: Yes. That's what I tell them. They say, "We already helped the other, but you came too late, so therefore we can't help you."
Prabhupada: "So you are so poor?"-[aside:] Hare Krsna-"that you cannot help the second man? Then how you are charitable? You must be open to give charity to everyone." No use talking.
French devotee (1): They are very rich, Srila Prabhupada. They are very rich.
Prabhupada: Richer than us? [laughter] Do you think?
French devotee (1): No.
Prabhupada: How many branches he has got of his business?
Aksayananda: So I usually tell them, "It is not for us that we want help, but so that we can help others." They like that. They can appreciate humanitarian viewpoint, material benefit. That's all.
Prabhupada: So we are giving the best humanitarian service-to stop his repetition of birth and death.
Brahmananda: The final solution.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: This is the final solution.
Aksayananda: Srila Prabhupada, in India, now in the cities, wherever we go, there are so many big cinema houses being built. So if the young people are not yet tired of that, then how will we convince them of Krsna consciousness? They all go by the thousands to the cinema house.
Prabhupada: You approach the cinema proprietor and make him a member. We have got contribution from a very big cinema man.
Brahmananda: Raj Kapoor has become a patron member.
Prabhupada: You can show his letter, how he appreciates. So similarly, you can collect some money. So this money is coming from the cinema visitors, so indirectly they will be benefited. Yes.
Aksayananda: That is only indirectly, eh? Money is there, and they will give. Still they'll go on showing the nonsense, and all the young people are going and being corrupted.
Prabhupada: That is going on everywhere, not only in the cinema. Karmis. So our duty is to take some service; then they will be benefited by that. Kurusva tad mad-arpanam. [Bg. 9.27] Krsna says, "Whatever you do doesn't matter. The result, give Me." [break]
French devotee (2): Srila Prabhupada, they to cinema because they have no adventures in their life. So they go to cinema. If they become Krsna conscious, so they don't need to go to cinema.
Prabhupada: Krsna conscious is not so cheap. Have you come to Krsna consciousness? Don't take Krsna consciousness so cheap that they will go to cinema and become Krsna conscious.
Brahmananda: No, he says that if they become Krsna conscious, then they will stop going to the cinema.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is the test. [aside:] Hare Krsna. Jaya. This is the test. Bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra [SB 11.2.42]. Advancement of Krsna consciousness means he's no more interested with anything material. That is Krsna conscious. There is a Bengali proverb, ami dud o khaya tamak o khaya: [The children, they take milk, and adults, they smoke.] So one [tender boy speaks in stammering words. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati quotes in his Upakhyane Upadesa] is speaking that "I take milk and smoke also."
Brahmananda: He thinks he's all right. "I'm okay."
Prabhupada: Yes. "I go to temple and I do all nonsense also." Hare Krsna. Hare Krsna. We shall go directly temple?
Brahmananda: Yes. [end]
